Description
March l, 1966 H. GRABER CONVERTIBLE wEARING APPAREL Filed June 5, 1964 INVENTOR HARRY GRABER ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,237,210 CONVERTIBLE WEARING APPAREL Harry Graber, 7729 W. Lorraine Place, Milwaukee, Wis. Filed June 5, 1964, Ser. No. 372,789 4 Claims. (Cl. 2-209.1)
This invention relates to convertible wearing apparel.
The main object of the invention is to provide an elongated knit structure so -constructed as to permit its conversion into a multiplicity of desirable articles of iwearing apparel, including hats, mutfs and scarfs, so that a versatile effect can be provided from the basic structure to satisfy numerous situations particularly as regards the styling of head apparel for women.
Another object Iof the invention is to provide an elon-k gated open end tubular elastic knit structure having reduced terminal portions with outwardly flared extremities so that one half of the tubular structure can be telescoped into, and entirely through, the other half to provide a hood of pleasing ornamental form at its top portion but capable of enclosing the head and side face portions of the body for warmth, and wherein the ornamental top portion can be quickly and conveniently associated with pompons and other ornamental designs by the use of an elastic band.
Another object of the invention is to provide an elastic open end tubular structure having extremities which, when the half sections are telescoped one within the other, are outwardly flared and capable of adjustment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a structure capable of forming a head covering or caphaving an enlarged peripheral bottom structure and variable body lengths.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tubular knit elastic structure having reduced open terminal portions which can be telescoped and rolled to provide an earmutf or bandeau structure or a structure capable of use about the neck as a scarf.
These and other objects of the invention will more clearly hereinafter appear by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the instant specification and wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in iwhi'ch:
FIG. 1 is a side view showing the basic structure in elongated form;
FIG. 2 is a transverse section showing the structure of FIG. 1 telescoped and provided with a restricting band and an ornamental attachment;
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2 in which the bottom edge portion is folded to create a relatively heavy band structure;
FIG. 4 illustrates the structure of FIG. 3 in use;
FIG. 5 shows the structure of FIG. 1 rolled into a band form utilized as a mufiler about the neck;
FIG. 6 is a sectional View through the muffler structure of FIG. 5; and
FIG. 7 shows the structure of FIG. l rolled to form a bandeau.
Referring to FIG. 1 there is illustrated an elongated tubular body 1 knit from suitable material so as to provide a relatively elastic structure, the tubular body 1 being reduced or contracted during knitting as shown at 2 adjacent its terminal portions to provide outwardly flaring ends 3 having binding stitches 4 to prevent unraveling and to provide a pre-formed relatively stiff marginal edge portion. It will be apparent from an inspection of FIG. 1 that if desired, this knit body could readily be used as a muff by inserting the hand and arm extremities through the terminal portions and will, when so used, provide desirable Iwarmth.
In FIG. 2 the structure of FIG. 1 is shown with one half of the structure 1a telescoped in the other half of the ICC structure so that the telescoping parts are of uniform length, whereby the pre-formed marginal edges or end 4 will remain in open, outwardly flared form. In this form a pompon or other decorative `structure can be inserted by a carrying cord, wire or other medium 5 and have one end portion 6 enlarged and sticking through the reduced ends of the assembly with the -other end projecting outwardly and carrying an ornamental form such as a pompon 7. Any decorative structure may be substituted for the pompon 7 and, of course, this decorative article could be in any desired shape, form or color, to correspond or to provide contrast with the color of the body of the assembly.
A rubber band S clamps the reduced portion of the telescoping body below the marginal end portion 4 to clamp the string or other supporting element 5 within the assembly and to provide a more positive outwardly flaring upper terminal portion, it being understood that this upper terminal portion can, as in the case of the 'decorative element 7, he provided in contrasting colors with the tubular body 1.
In the disclosure of FIG. 2, the structure can be used as a hood and pulled over the head, face and neck and provides a desirable head covering for use in outdoor activities such as skating, skiing and the like. A further utilization of the structure of FIGS. 1 and 2 is found in FIG. 3 where the bottom portion of the telescoped assembly is folded upon itself any desired number of turns as at 9. While only one fold is illustrated, it is obvious that several folds, either long, short or otherwise, can be made at the bottom of the body structure to provide an assembly comprehended by FIG. 4 in which figure there are obviously a number of folds to provide a relatively short cap particularly for use by women, although it is to be understood that the structure is also desirable and usable by both men and women and/or children.
In FIGS. 5 and 7 the structure shown in FIG. l has been rolled to provide elastic bands which, because of the structure of the tubing 1, i.e. being of knit elastic and including contracted areas, can be readily expanded and pulled over the head as a protection for the throat, as in FIG. 5, providing a mutiler assembly as shown at 10; or as shown in FIG. 7, this same structure can be used about the head to provide a bandeau type structure and would function to retain the hair and for warmth for portions of the head and ears.
It is to be understood that the structure of FIG. 1 may be formed by knitting and the material used can be of any design or texture so that the assembly can be used in different climates to function in its many capacities in accordance with the disclosure. It is also to be understood that the elastic band 8, shown in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4, can be of ornamental form and of any desired color or can be in the form of the conventional rubber band, in which event it would not be conspicuous in the structure when used for its intended purpose.
It will be obvious to one skilled in the art that the present versatile structure has many purposes and is of a universal type insofar as it uses and users are concerned.
It Iwill also be obvious to one skilled in the art that a twistable piece of wire, or other suitable adjustable and removable material, may be used in lieu of the rubber band What is claimed is:
1. In a convertible garment comprising an elongated tubular body of elastic knit form, said knit tubular body having reduced terminal portions and further reduced areas inward of said terminal portions with the outer marginal edges of the terminal portions reinforced to provide stiffened marginal extremities, said body being telescoped to position one-half portion within the other with the reduced extremities overlapping and outwardly flaring and retained in outwardly flared position by the marginal reinforcing.
2. The structure of claim 1 characterized in that an elastic band is provided about the reduced portions of the telescoped structure to provide a closure therefor.
3. The structure of claim 1 characterized in that an ornamental design including a flexible terminal portion projects within the reduced portions -of the overlapped body and an elastic band encompasses the reduced portions to secure the flexible terminal portion in position.
4. In a device of the class described, a head covering comprising a tubular body having open end portions, said body being reduced inward of its terminals, said tubular lbody having yone portion telescoped within itself to provide a multi-ply structure including outwardly flared top portions, means for securing the outwardly flared portions together at a point inwardly of its outer extremity, the
bottom portion of said telescoped body having a roll to provide a thickened annular band portion.
