Abstract

A hat intended for concealing a woman''s natural hair, for example, in the event that such natural hair is wound on curlers or is otherwise unpresentable, includes a voluminous, crushable and generally opaque covering member held around the wearer''s head by a stretchable elastic section extending partially along the peripheral edge of the covering member and a pair of tie strings provided on opposite sides of a cutaway portion in the peripheral edge of the covering member generally opposite the stretchable elastic section. Hairlike tresses are secured, preferably detachably, to the inner surface of the hat inwardly of the peripheral edge thereof and at several positions therearound so as to extend beyond such peripheral edge.

WOMANS lIIA'll WITlIlI DlElPENDING HAIR 'IllIlESSES BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to hats and more particularly to hats which are intended to be worn for the purpose of concealing a wearers natural hair while presenting an attractive and stylish appearance to such a person.

The use of boudoir caps, scarves and babushkas for the purpose of concealing a persons natural hair on occasions, for example, when such natural hair is wound on hair curlers or is wet or otherwise dishevelled, for example, after a person has been swimming or has engaged in outdoor sports, such as skiing and sailing, is well known. It will also be understood that, although such boudoir caps and scarves are efiective for the aforesaid purposes, the appearances presented by such known head coverings on many persons cannot be described as attractive, let alone stylish.

This problem has already been fully appreciated and numerous suggestions have previously been made for the provision of more attractive head coverings for use in circumstances such as those already indicated. It has, for instance, already been proposed to provide boudoir caps and head scarves with hairlike tresses which extend from the edges of such caps and scarves to simulate a more natural appearance than that which is obtained when an unadorned scarf or cap is used. Such prior proposals, although potentially effective for the purposes intended, have not, however, provided a head covering which could be worn by a woman when she desired to look stylish and well dressed.

It is accordingly a principal object of the present invention to provide a hat in distinction to a scarf or boudoir cap which hat is effective to conceal the wearers natural hair and to provide a stylish and attractive appearance to the wearer.

It is another object of the present invention to provide a hat which may be worn over a persons natural hair to conceal curlers or other unfinished appearance thereof and which hat is characterized by the unusually wide range of styles and appearances which it permits the wearer to assume.

Yet another object of this invention is to provide a hat effective for the aforementioned purposes and which in itself is capable of providing for the wearer a simulated effect of a stylish coiffure topped by a fashionable hat.

Another object of this invention is to provide a hat which is simple in its construction, which can be manufactured from a wide range of materials and which is fitted easily by a woman onto her head even when her natural hair is wound on curlers or otherwise unattractive.

A further object of the invention is to provide a hat for a woman to wear after she has had her natural hair styled and in the event that she wishes both to protect her coiffure and to appear stylish and well dressed in the meantime.

Another object of this invention is to provide a hat of the aforementioned type, which hat can be placed in a simple manner over a persons natural hair after the latter has been styled with minimum risk of disturbing the wearer's coiffure.

Yet another object of the invention is to provide a hat by the use of which a person may simply and effectively modify her appearance.

Other objects of the invention will become apparent as the description herein proceeds.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In its broadest scope, the present invention provides a hat comprising a voluminous, crushable and generally opaque covering member having an inner surface and an outer surface for disposition over a wearers head and defined by a peripheral edge for disposition around the wearers head to contain the wearers hair beneath said voluminous covering member, a stretchable elastic section extending partially along said peripheral edge of said covering member, a tightening means generally opposite said stretchable elastic section for holding said peripheral edge of said covering member about LII the wearer's head, and at least one hairlike tress secured to said covering member on said inner surface thereof inwardly of said peripheral edge thereof and adapted to extend outwardly beyond said peripheral edge of said covering member when said hat is disposed on the wearer's head.

The aforementioned tightening means provided in a hat in accordance with the present invention usefully comprises a cutaway portion of said covering member extending inwardly from the peripheral edge thereof and a pair of ties secured to the covering member in general proximity to the peripheral edge thereof on each side of the cutaway portion for securing the peripheral edge of the covering member about the wearers head. This particular arrangement is especially ad vantageous in facilitating the placing of the hat over the wearer's head in a simple manner even when the natural hair is wound on curlers or styled into an elaborate coiffure.

When a hat in accordance with this invention is provided in the aforesaid manner with such a cutaway portion, there is usefully also provided an elongated flaplike or taillike member secured or securable to the covering member and adapted to overlie and conceal such cutaway portion when the hat is worn.

In accordance with another useful feature of this invention, one or more hairlilte tresses will be secured to the inner surface of the covering member of such a hat inwardly of the peripheral edge in a readily detachable manner. By the use of such detachable securement of the hairlilke tresses, the wearer is free to use tresses of different colors and styles at different times to provide a wide range of styles and appearances.

Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description herein proceeds.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The invention will now be described merely by way of illustration with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

FIG. I is a front perspective view slightly from below and slightly from one side of a particularly useful embodiment of a hat in accordance with the present invention, showing a brim of such a hat disposed in its outermost position and showing hairlike tresses of such a hat in exploded disposition relative thereto;

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring first to FIG. I of the accompanying drawings, there is shown therein generally at a particularly useful embodiment of a hat in accordance with the present invention. It will be seen from FIG. I that the hat It] comprises a voluminous, crushable and generally opaque covering member generally indicated at I2 and having an inner surface 13 and an outer surface M.

In specifying herein that the covering member 12 is voluminous, it is intended to make clear that the hat can be worn by a person whose natural hair is wound on curlers or has been styled without the shape of such curlers being visible through the hat and without risk of crushing or otherwise damaging such a hairstyle.

In specifying that the covering member 12 is crushable, it is intended to make clear that such a member may be folded, crushed or pulled as required not only to accommodate the volume of the wearers natural hair enclosed by the hat 10, but also to accommodate any hair curlers being used by the wearer and to permit the hat to be fitted and positioned as will be explained in greater detail hereinafter. Normally, a hat in accordance with this invention will be essentially free of rigid, i.e., noncrushable, components but the use of relatively small rigid members is not totally precluded.

It will be understood that it is important in a hat in accordance with the present invention that the covering member 12 thereof be essentially opaque so as to conceal the wearers natural hair and/or any curlers used in such natural hair.

Referring further to the structure of the hat 10, it will be seen that the hat 10 is provided with a stretchable elastic section generally indicated at 16 and comprising an elastic ribbon or thread 17 disposed within a tubular portion of the covering member 10 generally along a section of the peripheral edge 18 thereof, the elastic thread 17 being secured, for example, by sewing at each of its ends to the covering member 12. The use of an elastic section such as section 16, which extends along the peripheral edge 18 of the hat 10 to a distance corresponding to about one-third of the total length of the peripheral edge 18 has been found to be particularly advantageous.

Generally opposite the stretchable elastic section 16, the peripheral edge 18 of the covering member 12 is discontinuous having an inwardly extending cutaway portion 19 as will best be seen by reference to FIG. 6. The hat 10 also includes a tightening means generally indicated at 20 and, in the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 1, this tightening means 20 comprises a pair of tie strings or

21 and 22 which are secured to the covering member 12 at the peripheral edge 18 thereof on opposite sides of the cutaway portion 19. The manner in which these

21 and 22 serve to secure the hat 10 on the head of a wearer will be more fully explained hereinafter.

The particular embodiment of a hat in accordance with the invention and as shown at 10 in FIGS. 1 to 6 is provided on the inner surface 13 of the covering member 12 with a number of pads or small squares of Velcro material, pads 25 to 34 being visible in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings. These pads are provided for detachable engagement, as desired, with a pad of cooperating detachably interlocking Velcro material on which tresses of hairlike strands are generally fastened, as exemplified, by the tress generally indicated at 36 in FIG. 1 and in which a number of hairlike strands 37 are secured to a square pad 38 of appropriate Velcro material. A wider tress indicated generally at 40 includes a correspondingly wider panel or pad 41 of Velcro material and hairlike strands 42 secured hereto.

36 and 40 are utilized with the hat 10 will be explained in greater detail hereinafter but it can be usefully noted at this juncture that the provision of Velcro pads such as pads 25 to 34 peripherally around the covering member 12 is useful in permitting hair tresses such as

36 and 40 to be secured detachably to the covering member 12 in any desired combination of peripheral positions. Additionally, the provision of such Velcro pads at varying distances inwardly from the peripheral edge 18 of the covering member 12 permits the

36 and 40 to be secured to the covering member 12 on the inner surface 13 thereof so that such tresses extend out wardly beyond the peripheral edge 18 thereof at varying extents. The versatility of this arrangement will be more fully understood when the use of the hat 10 is described hereinafter in greater detail.

In accordance with another useful feature of the present invention, the hat shown at 10 in FIGS. 1 to 6 has flexibly secured thereto along part of its peripheral edge 18 a soft brim 50, which can extend outwardly or partially or completely inwardly, as desired, from the peripheral edge 18 and as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings. When a hat in accordance with this invention is provided with such a movable brim, the aforementioned Velcro fastening pads may usefully be disposed inwardly from the peripheral edge 18 of covering member 12 a distance greater than the width of such a brim, as exemplified by the positions of the

The hat 10 shown in FIG. 1 will be considered, merely by way of illustration, as being formed from an essentially nonporous material such as leather, leatherette, plastic material, a heavy textile material, a furlike material or the like and, with the use of such a nonporous material, openings as exemplified by openings 52 (FIGS. 1 and 6) are usefully provided to permit the passage of air into and out of the hat 10.

The hat 10 of FIGS. 1 to 6 also comprises an elongated flaplike or taillike member generally indicated at 54 and, in the particular embodiment illustrated, adapted when the hat 10 is worn, to overlie and conceal the cutaway portion 19 and the openings 52 hereinbefore mentioned. Although the flaplike member 54 serves to conceal the openings 52 and the cutaway portion 19, it should be stressed that such provision of the member 54 is also particularly advantageous in providing even greater versatility to the hat 10. For example, even if the covering member 12 is fonned of a porous generally open weave but essentially opaque textile material, the provision of a taillike member such as member 54 can still be ad vantageous as will be more fully understood when the different ways in which the hat 10 may be worn are described in greater detail hereinafter.

Having described the construction of the hat 10 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, two of many ways in which such a hat can be worn will now be considered with particular reference to FIGS. 3 to 6 of the accompanying drawings.

Referring first, therefore, to FIGS. 3 and 4, it will be seen that there is illustrated therein the hat 10 worn in what may be described as a sideways disposition. It is to be noted that the elongated taillike member 54 extends downwardly from the general area of the crown of the wearers head towards her left ear and overlies and conceals both the openings 52 and the eutaway portion 19. The

21 and 22 are shown in FIG. 3 as being secured over the taillike member 54 to hold the latter in position as well as to secure the peripheral edge 18 of the covering member 12 securely about the wearers head.

Referring to FIG. 4, it will be seen that the hat 10 is illustrated therein as being worn with the aforementioned brim 50 folded under the peripheral edge 18 of the covering member 12 in general proximity to the wearers right ear. Hairlike tresses 60 to 67 are shown as extending from beneath the covering member 12 and it will be understood that these tresses are secured in the aforementioned manner by the use of the various Velcro pads as exemplified by the pads 25 to 34 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.

Referring further to FIGS. 3 and 4, note should be made of the generally voluminous form of the covering member 12. This is particularly advantageous in that it permits the hat 10 to be worn by a woman whose natural hair is wound around hair curlers which can be quite bulky. There is, however, no suggestion from the appearance of the hat 10 as illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4 that such hair curlers are present beneath the hat l0.

The manner in which the hat 10 is shown as being worn in FIGS. 5 and 6 of the accompanying drawings will now be explained. In these figures, the hat 10 is shown as being worn generally squarely on the head, i.e., with the brim 50 at the front and the cutaway portion 119 at the nape of the wearer's neck. it will also be seen that H6. shows the brim 88 disposed essentially completely outwardly of the peripheral edge 18 of the covering member 112. it will further be understood that the tie strings 211 and 22. are shown untied in FIG. 6 to reveal the aforementioned cutaway portion 119 and the openings 52 provided in the covering member l2 to permit the passage of air into and out of the hat 18. Such provision of openings 52 is more important when the covering member 12 is formed of an essentially nonporous material and in the event that the wearers natural hair is wet and it is desired that such natural hair should dry during the time that the hat 118 is being worn.

With further reference to FIGS. 5 and 6, it will be seen that the hat 18 has been illustrated therein as being provided with five

78, 711, 72, 73 and 74. These tresses are detachably mounted on the covering member 12 in the manner already described, for example, by the use of Velcro pads, so as to extend beyond the peripheral edge in proximity to the sides and rear of the wearers head, and over her brow.

The hat generally indicated at 80 in FIG. 7 of the accompanying drawings corresponds generally to the hat 18 already described and is shown as being worn in generally the same manner as already described with reference to FIGS. 5 and s of the accompanying drawings. The hat 88 differs from the hat l8, however, in that it is partly tailored by the provision of stitching as indicated at 81, 82 and 83 which form pleats or gathers 84 in the upper portion of the hat 88. A further feature of the hat 88 shown in FIG. 7 is the provision of a stretchable elastic periphery 85 for a hole 86 provided generally at the crown of the hat 88. An elongated taillike member 87 is provided in much the same manner as the member 84 was provided for the hat l8 already described with reference to FIGS. l to 6 of the accompanying drawings for the purpose of concealing openings in the rear part of the hat and for the purpose of concealing a cutaway portion, on each side of which tie strings 88 and 89 are secured. The provision of such stretchability in the crown of the hat 88 is advantageous in that it enables the hat to expand further when required.

The taillilte member 87 may be permanently secured to the hat 80 or may be temporarily secured thereto by passing it through the aforementioned hole 86. A loop 98 may be provided, if desired, for the purpose of retaining the member 87 in position.

Referring now in greater detail to HQ. 8, it will be seen that the hat 88 is conveniently formed from a generally rectangular panel 911 of textile or other suitable material. A brim 92 also usefully of textile material is secured by sewing as at 93 along the front edge of the panel 81. The rows of

It will also be seen from HQ 8 that the hat 88 is provided with a stretchable elastic section 94 along the front edge of the panel 9i generally centrally thereof and it will further be understood that this stretchable section SMl will be disposed generally opposite the aforementioned cutaway portion provided at the back of the hat.

For completing the manufacture of the hat 88, each end of the panel 911 will be drawn together and secured, for example, by stitching, to a respective one of the aforementioned tie strings 88 and 89. An elastic thread (not shown) is inserted into a tubular hem 95 formed generally centrally along the rear edge of the panel 91 and the ends of such thread are fastened together to provide the desired stretchability for the hole 86 already identified with reference to H6. 7.

Finally, the panel 911 is folded in half generally about its center line A--A and those portions of its rear edge which are identified in FlG. 8 by the

96 and 87 are sewn together. if desired, such sewing can be discontinuous to form additional ventilation holes in the hat 88. The remaining unsewn portions of the rear edge of the panel 911 as indicated at 98 and 99 serve to define the aforementioned cutaway portron.

Having described some typical hats in accordance with the present invention and some typical ways in which such hats can be worn, the several important features of such hats will now be briefly summarized.

As already explained, the principal object of the present invention is to provide a hat which functions both to conceal a wearer's natural hair and to provide her with a stylish and attractive appearance as may be required, for example, if the wearer has her natural hair wound on curlers, if she has had her hair styled and wishes to protect her coiffure, or if she has been swimming or has engaged in some other outdoor activity such as sailing or skiing which has disturbed her natural hair.

A principal advantage of a hat in accordance with the present invention is that such a hat permits a wearer to appear well dressed and yet she does not appear merely to have placed a temporary cover over her head as is frequently the case if she uses a boudoir cap, a scarf or a babushlta for the same purpose.

Another important advantage of the hats of this invention is that they are versatile in the manner in which they can be worn thus allowing a woman to be stylishly dressed even though her natural hair does not show and in fact even though her natural hair may be totally unpresentable.

The versatility in appearance which can be obtained by the use of the hats of this invention results from a combination of factors, among which there may be selected for specific mention, the disposition of the Velcro pads or other securing means, at numerous positions within such a hat so permitting the hair like tresses to extend beyond the peripheral edge of the hat to different distances and at different positions, as desired. Further mention may be made of the provision of a brim such as the brim 58 which may be disposed either outside or partially or completely within the hat, such option providing yet another change in appearance of'the hat ll).

Another important feature providing versatility of appearance to the hat shown in the accompanying drawings is the provision of the taillike member 54 which can be used in a variety of ways to modify the appearance of the hat. Furthermore, the provision of a stretchable elastic section 18 and the cutaway portion 119 has been found to be particularly functional in permitting the use of the hat it] under a wide range of conditions to give very many different appearances thereto. The particular arrangement of the stretchable elastic section l6 and the cutaway portion 19 is advantageous in facilitating the positioning of the hat on a wearers head without disturbing her natural hair and in accommodating relatively bulky hair curlers.

By providing the hairlike tresses in a detachable manner as already described, even further versatility and variability of appearance is provided in that such tresses may be provided in different positions, at different angles and in different colors. The variable extent to which such tresses project from beneath the hat is particularly important.

it will be understood that the invention is not restricted to the specific features hereinbefore recited merely by way of illustration and that numerous modifications can be made to the hats specifically described without departing from the scope of the invention.

it is, for example, equally possible in. accordance with the invention to use means other than Velcro for securing the hairlike tresses to the covering member of such a hat. Although it is desirable for the reasons already explained to secure such hairlilte tresses in a detachable manner, permanent securement of such tresses is also possible.

The securement of the hairlilte tresses to the hat W as shown in the accompanying drawings at positions disposed inwardly of the peripheral edge of the hat is particularly advantageous in avoiding the appearance of unsightly bulges along such a peripheral edge as well as avoiding discomfort to the wearer due to the presence of such securing means beneath the peripheral edge which is held against the wearer's head.

The hairlike strands used in the tresses forming part of the hat of this invention may be of natural hair but the use of synthetic hairlike strands will generally be preferred in view of the relative ease with which such synthetic materials can be cleaned and styled.

l. A hat comprising:

a voluminous, crushable and generally opaque covering member having an inner surface and an outer surface for disposition over a wearer's head and defined by a peripheral edge for disposition around the wearer's head loosely to contain the wearers hair beneath said voluminous covering member;

a stretchable elastic section extending partially along said peripheral edge of said covering member;

a tightening means including a cutaway portion of said covering member extending inwardly from said peripheral edge thereof at a position generally opposite said stretchable elastic section and a pair of ties secured to said covering member in general proximity to said peripheral edge thereof on each side of said cutaway portion for holding said peripheral edge of said covering member about the wearers head;

an elongated flaplike member secured to said covering member inwardly of said peripheral edge thereof and,

adapted to overlie and conceal said cutaway portion of said covering member; and

at least one hairlike tress secured to said covering member on said inner surface thereof inwardly of said peripheral edge of said covering member to extend outwardly beneath said peripheral edge when said hat is disposed on the wearers head.

2. A hat as claimed in claim 1 in which said hairlike tress is detachably secured to said covering member on said inner surface thereof.

3. A hat as claimed in claim 1 in which said covering flaplike member.

4. A hat as claimed in claim 1 in which said covering member has a soft brim flexibly secured along a portion of said peripheral edge thereof whereby said brim may be disposed as desired on either side of said peripheral edge.

5. A hat as claimed in claim 2 in which said covering member is adapted to have said hairlike tress detachably secured thereto at any of a plurality of different positions on said inner surface thereof and inwardly of said peripheral edge thereof.

6. A hat as claimed in claim 5 in which said plurality of different positions are disposed around said inner surface of said covering member to permit said hairlike tress to be secured thereto at different peripheral positions and at different positions inwardly of said peripheral edge of said covering member to permit said hairlike tress to extend outwardly beyond said peripheral edge to a variable distance.

7. A hat as claimed in claim 5 in which said hairlike tress comprises a plurality of hairlike strands secured to a mounting pad detachably engageable with cooperating pads provided on said inner surface of said covering member.

8. A hat as claimed in claim 7 in which said mounting pad and said cooperating pads are formed with detachably interlocking projections.

9. A hat as claimed in claim 8 in which said covering member has a soft brim flexibly secured along a portion of said peripheral edge thereof whereby said brim may be disposed as desired on either side of said peripheral edge and in which said cooperating pads are disposed inwardly of said peripheral edge of said covering member such that they are not covered by said brim when said brim is disposed inwardly of said peripheral edge of said covering member.

A hat comprising: a voluminous, crushable and generally opaque covering member having an inner surface and an outer surface for disposition over a wearer''s head and defined by a peripheral edge for disposition around the wearer''s head loosely to contain the wearer''s hair beneath said voluminous covering member; a stretchable elastic section extending partially along said peripheral edge of said covering member; a tightening means including a cutaway portion of said covering member extending inwardly from said peripheral edge thereof at a position generally opposite said stretchable elastic section and a pair of ties secured to said covering member in general proximity to said peripheral edge thereof on each side of said cutaway portion for holding said peripheral edge of said covering member about the wearer''s head; an elongated flap-like member secured to said covering member inwardly of said peripheral edge thereof and adapted to overlie and conceal said cutaway portion of said covering member; and at least one hairlike tress secured to said covering member on said inner surface thereof inwardly of said peripheral edge of said covering member to extend outwardly beneath said peripheral edge when said hat is disposed on the wearer''s head.

3. A hat as claimed in claim 1 in which said covering member is formed of a generally nonporous material but has openings extending therethrough for the passage of air, which openings are disposed so as to be coNcealed by said elongated flaplike member.
