The present invention relates generally to wearing apparel, and in particular it relates to an article of wearing which is usable as a sash, or as a scarf, or as a combination scarf and capuchin; that is, a hooded head-covering.

This application is a continuation-in-part of my application Serial No. 606,352, co-pending herewith, and now Patent No. 2,413,319, dated December 31, 1936.

The main object of the present invention is the provision of an article of apparel which comprises an elongated endless loop of material so shaped that it may be simply, easily and quickly converted from a sash or from a scarf into a combined scarf and hood-like head covering.

Another object of :the present invention is the provision of an article of apparel which comprises an elongated endless loop of material which may be used as a neck and shoulder encircling scarf, and converted into a capuchin, or hooded head covering, merely by drawing or threading one looped end of my article through a loop at the other end, and then opening the threaded loop and placing same over the head of the wearer. As so used, the device becomes a scarfcapuchin which will remain in position about the neck and head of the wearer without requiring buttons, zippers, clasp fasteners or similar devices.

My device, indicated generally by reference numeral [0, comprises an elongated, endless loop of material, as wool, silk, cotton, jersey, rayon, or waterproofed fabric, and of any desired color. The loop, as a complete entity, may be formed of one or more pieces, sewn or otherwise secured together, as at IS. The component pieces may, if desired, be secured together on the bias, so as to reduce stretching.

One side, as l2, of the loop may be perfectly straight (see Fig. 1). The opposite side thereof, l4, may be perfectly straight and parallel to side l2 for at least half its length, and perhaps even more about two-thirds of its length, as at It. From that point 16, side I4 is flared outwardly and away from side 12 to a point l8 which is short of the end 20 of side l2. By this arrangement, I provide an elongated endless loop which is perfectly straight for at least half its length, wider at one end 22 than at the other end 24, and longer on one side 12 than the other side M.

This particular construction permits any number of arrangements to be made. The device may be used as a combined scarf-jabot, as illustrated in Fig. 2. For this particular use of my device, the central portion thereof is draped about the neck, the wider end 22 is drawn through loop 26 through the narrow end 24, and the material of the wide end 22 draped across the chest or breast of the wearer. It is to be understood that my encircling the neck with device may be made of any color or design or material, and this combined scarf-jabot will be found to be very attractive, the narrower portion no unsightly bunching or bulging, and the wider portion spreading out and across the body.

When it is desired to use my device as a combined scarf-capuchin, the loop is arranged as in Fig. 2. The material at Wide end 22 is then flared open, and the side b of the wide loop drawn back over the head, side a framing the wearer's face softly and attractively, either loosely, as shown in Fig. 3, or tightly, as Will be readily understood. For this use of my device, the wider end arrangement is very important, the straight side I2 forming the front, face outlining portion, and the shorter side covering the top and rear of the wearers head.

Figure 5 illustrates how a device of my invention, which may be formed of waterproof or water repellant material, may be used to protect the wearers head and neck against cold or otherwise inclement weather. Wide end 22 is flared open and draped over the head, long side a outlining the wearers face, with side I) over the back of the head. The opposite sides of the loop are held immediately below the face and wound around the neck, and narrower end 24 drawn tightly down through and between the convolutions of the neck winding. In this arrangement, the head and neck are protected against rain, cold or other types of inclement weather conditions.

Figure 6 illustrates how my device may be used as a hooded head covering and as a decorative, dressy neck ornament. my device, the wider end 22 is flared open, and the open loop placed over the wearers head rather loosely and softly. The free narrower end of the loop is wound around the neck loosely and then over portion 30 and back to the side opposite portion 32 immediately below the face. The wider end frames the face and covers the head smoothly because of the flaring as at IE to l8 (Fig. 1) and the uniformly thin width of the remainder of the loop permits even, balanced and easy adjustment.

In Figs. 7 and 8, I have illustrated how my device may be used as a combined scarf-capuchin and snood, with wider end 22 always disposed about the face and over the head, and the narrower, even portion of the loop being arranged about the wearers hair however it is worn, either as a depending bun, as in Fig. 7, or as wound close to the head as in Fig. 8.

In all uses of my device, the fact that one end is wider than the other, and that one side is longer than the other at the wider end, permits the user to adapt the device for so many different purposes.

I claim:

An article of wearing apparel comprising an elongated endless loop of material having a widened portion adapted to form a head covering, the loop when folded transversely through the widened portion forming a curved end and having a straight continuous side, the transverse fold line being curved away from the said straight side and inclining towards the opposite end of the loop, the other side curving inwardly from the transverse fold line towards the opposite end and continuing parallel to the straight side for at least half the length thereof forming a portion adapted to encircle the neck of the wearer.
