dClaima.
The present invention relates to improvements in hat coverings, and more specifically water proof hat coverings.
The object of this invention is to provide a neat, compact, light, foldable water proof covering for hats which may becarried in a small space about the person when not in use and which may be readily fitted over the hat in inclement weather.
Another object of this invention is to a hat covering adaptable for use on all t men's or women's hats.
Another object of this invention is to provide a transparent protective covering for hats for use in retail hat stores to prevent their being soiled when being displayed or fitted.
Another object of this invention is to provide a protective covering for the storage of hats which is dustproof, and takes up no more room than the hat itself.
Another object of this invention is to provide means for holding the rim of the hat in its proper position.
Another object of this invention is to provide 25 an article of the type described which may be manufactured cheaply and easily, but which is thoroughly eflicient and satisfactory in use.
Other and further objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following specification and from the claims appended hereto.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention as applied to a hat.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the hat and covering taken along lines 2'2 of Fig. 1, and. somewhat enlarged.
Fig. 3 is a detail showing the elastic band in the margin of the covering.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the blank from which the rim portion of the covering is constructed.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the crown portion of the covering is constructed.
Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the container for said covering.
Referring now to the drawing, and more particularly to Figures 1 and 2, numeral I indicates generally a hat, having a crown II and a brim l2. The hat [0 is shown as being a man's snap brim felt hat, but it may be any type of hat, either a man's or a woman's hat.
The hat Ill has a transparent protective covering indicated generally by numeral l3 fitting ovide sofover the crown II and the brim l2 thereof. Said covering I3 is preferably made of Cellophane but may be composed of oiled silk, rubber or other suitable material. The covering l3 comprises an upper or crown portion ll which fits snugly over the crown ll of the hat l0, and a lower or brim portion l5 which fits closely around the rim l2 covering the upper and lower surfaces thereof.- The brim portion l5 has an elastic band It which is secured or fastened in the peripheral edge portion II in a manner which is hereinafter more fully set forth.
The crown portion M of the covering I3 is cut from a single sheet of Cellophane or the like into a B shaped blank I8 having rounded edges Illa and a flat bottom edge |8b disposed oppositelyfrom rounded edges lBa as shown in Figure 5 of the drawing. The B shaped blank I8 appears as two semi-oval figures contiguous along the one side edge thereof.
The brim portion I5 of the covering I3 is cut from a sheet of Cellophane or the like into an O shaped blank l9 having a substantially circular edge I9a on the inner portion thereof, substantially as shown in Figure 4 of the drawing. The 0 shaped blank I! appears as a substantially cirg cular figure with an inner portion cut therefrom concentrically with an outer portion. Instead of using an 0 shaped blank, it may be found more economical to use an elongated strip of the covering material which is then joined together at the radial end portions thereof to form an endless strip.
The crown portion I 4 of the foldable waterproof covering |3 is formed by bringing the edges l8a as shown in Figure 5 of the drawing into abutting position and then securing or fastening the edge portions thereof together in any suitable manner but preferably with a stitching. A separate creased or folded strip 20 of'Cellophane or the like can be fitted over the abutting edge 40 portions of l8a and fastened thereto, so as to furnish a reenforced area about the joinder. If it is desired to eliminate the narrow strip 20, each of the edges "a. can be folded back upon itself before the edge portions thereof are placed in abutting relation to be stitched or sewed together. This will reenforce the area of joinder as there will be four layers of the Cellophane at this point. It is preferred to use the channeled strip 20 as it prevents moisture from seeping through the covering at the joinder.
The brim portion I5 is joined to crown portion M by securing the edge portion of I 8b (8 blank) to the inner marginal edge portion of Ma (0 blank) with thread or in any other suitable man-' ner. A narrow creased strip 2| of Cellophane or the like can be fitted over the abutting edge portions of l8b and Ila and fastened thereto by stitching which passes therethrough. The strip 2| serves to reenforce the area of the :Ioinder of the edge portions of I81) and Ila. If it is desired to eliminate the strip 2i, the edges llb and Isa can be folded back upon themselves for about a quarter of an inch before the edge portions thereof are brought into abutting relation to be sewed together. The free edge I! of the 0 shaped blank i9 is folded back upon itself for about a quarter of an inch to form a recess around the periphery of blank I8 and an elastic band I6 is secured therein by athread or the like.
The covering [3 is kept in a container 22, (see Figure 6 of the drawing) when it is not being used.
When it is desired to use the covering it, it is withdrawn from the container 22, unfolded and the crown portion I4 is placed over the crown of the hat upon which it is to be used. The brim portion l5 fits over the upper surface of the hat brim and substantially over the under surface thereof and the elastic band it tends to keep the covering snugly fitted over the hat. The elastic band i6 has the added function of keeping the hat brim in shape preventing it from flexing up or down.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is desired, therefore, that the invention be limited only by the prior art and the scope of theappended claims.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A foldable water-proof covering for a felt hat or the like comprising, a one-piece crown portion formed from a B shaped blank and hav-- ing oval edge portions in secured together relation, a substantially O shaped brim portionhaving an elastic band secured in the outer marginal edge thereof, and said brim portion being secured to the said crown portion.
2. A foldable water-proof hat covering comprising, a one-piece crown portion having two oval edge portions secured one to the other, a channeled strip of material fitting over said secured edge portions and attached thereto. a brim portion secured to said crown portion, and said brim portion having an elastic band in the outer marginal edge thereof.
3. A foldable water-proof hat covering comprising, a one-piece crown portion having two oval edge portions secured one to the other, a brim portion secured to said crown portion, and
said brim portion having an elastic band in the 2 outer marginal edge thereof.
4. A foldable water-proof hat covering comprising, a one-piece crown portion having two oval edge portions and one fiat edge portion, said oval edge portions being fixedly secured one to the other, a channeled strip of material fitting over said secured oval edge portions and attached thereto, a substantially circular brim portion having inner and outer edge portions, the said inner edge portion being attached to the flat edge portion of said crown portion, a second channeled strip of material fitting over the inner edge portion of said brim portion and the flat edge portion of said crown portion and secured thereto, and an elastic band secured in the outer edge portion of said brim portion.
