Be it known that I, MARIE A. PHILLIPS,

a citizen of the United States, residing at New York,- in the county of NewYork and State of New -York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

This invention is a; novel hat especially adapted forladies" wear; to bemade of any suitable material, andwhich is simple in construction, very comfortabla neat and. attractive in appearance and serviceable." It also has the advantages of being readily adjusted in a variety of different shapes or styles at thewill of the wearer; and it can be packed flat in a valiseaor trunk without injury. I

I will explain the construction of such hat with reference *to the accompanying drawin s, and set forth-in the claims the novel "construction and features thereof for which protection is desired; 1

The crown 1 is preferably formed out of a square piece of material, shown flat in Fig. 3. in depth or width than the height of the crown, and ltSlOWGl or inner edge is attached to the lower "edge of the crown and corresponds in diameter therewith; while its outer or upper edge is slightly larger in diameter than its inner edge as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 so that the brim will normally tend to stand substantially upright as in said figures, when the hat is worn. The

brim is soft and is gathered on each side near its lower edge as indicated at 2 so that the inner or lower edge ofthebrim will ap proximately conform in extent to the lower edge of the crown, and the inner edge of the brimis preferably turned under the edge of the crown as shown. in Fig. 2' and sewed thereto. The brim 2 may be" made of a straight piece of goods folded to the proper width and out to the proper length and its .ends united as indicated in Fig. 4. This brim blank is then gathered adjacent oneedge along the lines 2, 222. indicated in Fig. 41. Preferably three rows of gathers are made. After the gathers are put in the brim is attached to the crown on the line indicated at 2, and the lower row of gathers below the line 2 (Fig. 4) are turned within the crown.

The selvage 2 may besewed to the crown after it is turned under and before the lining is attached. AdiningB, of any suitable material, is sewed to the inner side of the brim within the crown along this line.

The crown and brim and the lining can all be cut on the straight of the goods.

As an example, to make such a hat out of velvet would require 1 yard and 20 inches of velvet 18 inches wide; and 7;}: inches of taffeta lining 27 inches wide, which is cut off according to size of hat, as it is used on the straight.

The crown 1 requires yard of velvet (18 inches wide) which makes a square as per pattern Fig. 3, and is plaited as above we plained and the corners then cut off making a round crown when finished.

The outer ruflie or brim 2 requires 1 yard and 2 inches of velvet, which is the length,

and which is sewedtogether after having been doubled to a width of 7 3; inches to selvage and made according to pattern, Fig. 4:. The lining 3 requires 7;} inches of tafi'eta A (as stated above) which is turned under l but full all around the crown; and Figs.

6, 7 and 8 show some of the different styles or .shapes in which the hat can be readily adjusted by the wearer; each of them being attractive in appearance; thus enabling the hat to be adjusted to best correspond with the dress. of the wearer.

The hat is made without any stiffening, but the shirred portion and general configuration of the brim the construction .of the crown and the connection of the brim to the crown gives the hat a substantial degree of stiffness around the part corresponding to the band, and insures that thebrim .and crown will retain the shapes to which they are adjusted when worn.

As the hat does not require any stiffening in the crown or brim it can be folded flat, when not in use, and be packed flat in a valise o'r trunk for transportation, and it can be folded compactly without injury.

The double thickness'of the brim and its form enhances its stiffness when worn and enables the brim to be displayed either side out at the will of the wearer; and to be adjusted in any shape or style desired and retain same while worn. What I claim is: 1. A collapsible adjustable hat for ladies wear comprising a crown portion and azbuim portion having its inner edge connected to the lower edge of the crown and conforming in diameter therewith, and having its outer edge slightly larger in diameter than its inner edge so that the rim will normally stand up when the hat is worn; the brim and crown being made of soft material so that the upper part of the brim may be readily formed of soft material and having its inner edge connected to the lower edge of the crown and conforming in diameter therewith, and having its outer edge slightly larger in diameter than its inner .edge .so

that the rim will normally stand up when a the hat is worn; the brim being shirred on opposite sides adjacent the lower edge there-. of to contract such edge to approximately the circumference of the lower part of the crown; the lower edgeof the shirred portion of the brim being sewed to the lower edge of the crown portion; the brim being readily adjustable to different positions and retaining such positions when the hat is worn, sub stantially as described- 3.. A ladys hat composed .of a crown portion of soft material having front and rear box plaits; and a brim of soft material folded upon itself, and shirred or gathered near its lower edge on opposite sides to reduce the circumference of such lower edge .to the approximate circumference .of the lower edge of the finished crown portion, the upper .edge of the brim being slightlylarger in diameter than its lowerqedge so {that the brim will normally sta'nd'up when the-hat is worn; the lower portion of the shirred edge of the brim being turned under the lower edge of the crown and sewed thereto, the portions .of the brim adjacent the box pla'its on the crown being left unshirred; the brim.
