SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,041, dated August 2, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DAVID SCHLESINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Hats, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved folding hat which can be folded very compactly, so as to occupy very little space, and when required for use can easily be unfolded and is so constructed as to fit on any head.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, which willbe fullydescribed hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved folding hat. Fig. 2-is a front view. Fig. 3 is a view of the inside. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is a side view of the hat, showing the preliminary folding. Fig. 6 is a top view showing the hat folded completely.

The hat is composed of a crown A and a rim B. The crown is formed of a series of tapering pieces of fabric a, that are sewed together, the lower ends of said pieces being secured to a band b, which is provided with a number of eyelets cl, which serve as ventilating-apertures. The brim B is formed of a series of sector-shaped pieces of fabric f, which are sewed together, and their outer edges are secured toa steel band g, which is bentin the shape shown in Fig. 1. The inner edges of the said pieces f are secured to a piece of elastic h. j is a lining for the brim. The bottom of the crown is connected with the brim a short distance from the elastic band it and concentric therewith. The elastic band in the inner edge of the opening of the brim per-- mits said opening to be enlarged when placed upon the head, thus adapting the hat to be placed on heads of different sizes at all times and having a good close fit. As no air can pass into the crown from below on account of the close fit of the elastic band, the ventilating-eyelets d have been provided, which permit of the circulation of the air in said crown.

When the hat is to be folded, two opposite sides of the brim are placed upon each other, so as to give the brim approximately a meniscus shape, as shown in Fig. 5, and then the ends of said meniscus-shaped body are folded toward each other and form an approximately circular body containing the folded brim and crown, as shown in Fig. 6.

For ladies use a cap -shaped crown 0 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2) is suitably fastened to the brim. The hat when folded can easily be carried in the pocket and when required can easily be opened and extended for use and can also be placed overany other hat as a sunshade.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a folding hat, the combination, with a crown composed of aseries of tapering pieces of fabric sewed to each other, of a band connecting the lower ends of said pieces, eyelets in said band, a brim formed of sector-shaped pieces sewed to each other, a steel band in the outer edge of said brim, and an elastic band in the inner edge of said brim, the crown being connected with the brim at a short distance outward from said elastic band, substantially as set forth.
