WILLIAM BERNS'IEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HE AD-COVERING.
No. 908,197. i
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1908.
Application led. March 25, 1908. Serial No. 423,246.
To all whom Lt may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BERNSTEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Head-Covering, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wearing apparel and its object is to provide a new and imroved head ,covering for infants and chilren, arranged to properly fit the head and to allow convenient washing and cleaning of the head covering with a view to insure long service and to maintain the head covering in a neat, tidy condition.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the body of the head covering in an extended position.
The body A of the head covering is preferably formed of a single piece of fabric material capable of loing washed, and the said body 1s preferably provided with an interior lining B, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The piece of fabric material for forming the body A is cut, as indicated in Fig. 3, to form a top C, sides D, D', a dividedback consisting of the members E, E, and a back covering flap F which extends from the rear of the top C, while the members E, E of the divided back extend from the rear of the sides D and D, respectively. 'When the piece of fabric material forming the body A is folded along the dotted lines indicated in Fig. 3, then the back members E and E meet along their edges E2, E3, and as the said edges E2, E3 are at obtuse angles relative to the bottom edges E4, E5 of the said back members, it is evident that the lower rear portion of the body A is drawn inward, to properly fit the rear of the head of the wearer, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. l. The meeting edges E2, E3 are provided with tying bands G, G, to fasten the back members E and E together, as indicated in Fig. 2, and the lower corners of the back covering flap F is provided with tying strings I-I, I-I adapted to be tied with corresponding tying strings I, I, arranged on the bottom edges E4 and E5 of the back members E and E. To the front lower corners of the sides D and D are removably attached tying ribbons J, J by the use of suitable fastening devices K, K, such as safety pins and the like. iVhen the head covering is placed in position on the childs or infants head, then the tying ribbons J, J are tied under the chin in the usual manner.
In case the head covering becomes soiled, the tying ribbons J and J are disconnected from the sides D, D of the body A, and then the several sets of tying strings G, Gr', H, H and I, Il are untied, to allow of unfolding the several parts of the body A and to permit convenient washing thereof. When the body has been washed the parts can be tied together again, as above described, and then the tying ribbons J, J' are re-attached, to complete the head covering.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A head covering formed of a single piece of fabric material having its central portion at the rear extended and provided in its rear edge at each side of and adjacent to the extension with notches, whereby a central overlying flap and back members, one at each side of the flap, will be formed at the rear edge of the material, tapes secured to the rear edges of the members for securing them together with their edges in substantial engagement when folded inwardly, and tapes secured to the corners of the flap and to the outer or lower edges of the back members lfor securing the flap in position over the back members.
2. A head covering having a body formed of a single piece of a fabric material arranged to provide a top, sides, a back formed of two membersextending integrally from the said sides and having their edges meeting when folded inwardly, a back covering Hap extending integrally from the said top for overlying the said divided back, the meeting edges of the said back members extending it oizatuvse* angles eltivetof the bot- "i n'me' to? this specification in' the' p'rese'ne of tom edges ofv the said back` Inernberfs,` tying* t-'W' sibseribing'wit11esses;
