Application August 17, 1951, Serial N0. 242,226
The invention relates to improvements in turbans worn by women when their hair is set in pin curls to effect a neat and presentable appearance; and the objects of the improvements are, first, to provide a Well fitting and neat head covering that will permit circulation of air to facilitate drying of the hair; second, to provide an attractive head covering that may be comfortably worn for sleep, work and play; and, third, to provide a head covering that will not slip, but will remain in place during sleep, work and play.
Other objects and attendant advantages will appear from the following detailed description of the attached drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a turban conveniently embodying our invention.
Fig. 2 shows the turban as it appears when secured about the head of the wearer.
Fig, 3 shows an intermediate step in the application of the turban to the wearers head.
Fig. 4 shows the fabric blank from which the cap component of the turban is formed.
Fig. 5 shows the tie strings or streamers by which the turban is secured; and
Fig. 6 is a view drawn to a larger scale showing the rear view of the finished turban.
As delineated in Fig. 1, the turban of our invention comprises a cap portion I8, and two streamers or tie strings H and I2 which depend from the bottom frontal corners of said cap portion, these components being separately illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5. From Fig. 4 it will be noted that the cap component I0 is conventionally indicated as blanked from sheer fabric which may be of loosely woven or knitted material which will allow free circulation of air through it, and of a size and area to completely cover the hair of the wearer. blank may, for example, be eighteen inches long, and the dimension at the median C-D may be fourteen inches. The back edge E--D-F of the cap blank is rounded on a curve having a radius of approximately eight inches struck from the point G in the median C--D, and the side edges A-E and B-F are rounded in curves having a radius of approximately twenty-seven inches struck from centers in prolongations of the line AB. A margin along the edge E-F is retroverted and seamed to provide a hem l3 approximately one quarter inch in breadth, and the remaining edges, if raw, are finished off with a narrower machine hem i4. Incident to forming the Wide hem [3, a strip of elastic about 3 inches long is inserted, and the fabric along the The front edge A-B of the cap' 1 Claim. (Cl. 2198) 2 mid portion of the edge EF is gathered or pleated as at It in Fig. 6, whereupon the ends of the elastic are secured by stitching at the points I! and I8. I
The two tie strings or streamers II and I2 are formed preferably from material which is stiffer and heavier material than that of the cap component ID. The streamer it may be cut, for example, to a length of about twenty-nine inches, and. the streamer [2 to a length of about twentyeight inches, or in some instances they may be made to the same length or to differ in length even to a greater extent. The width of the streamers may be five inches, and they are preferably provided with pointed ends as at H and J, and finished with a narrow perimetric hem.
In preparation for attachment to the cap It, the square ends AA-EE and BB-FF of the streamers are gathered to a width of approximately two and one quarter inches. The end portions A-E and BF of the bottom edge of cap 7 It are gathered by a similar amount, whereupon the gathered ends of the streamers l l and I2 are made fast to said portions, the'streamer H by stitching it all the way across as at [9 in Fig. 6, and the streamer l2 by stitching only at points 26 and 2| with incidental provision of a slit at 22.
In the use of the turban, the cap [0 is applied as a cover over the head of the wearer after the hair has been put up in pin curls, and is held to the head by contraction of the elastic [5 at the nape of the neck as shown in Fig. 3. The streamer II is next passed through the slit 22 as also shown in Fig. 3. Finally the streamer ll is brought upward to the left side of the head, and the streamer l2 upward of the right side of the head after which the two are tied together into the form of a bow over the brow of the head as at 23 in Fig. 2. If desired, the streamers may simply be crossed and the ends tucked under the upwardly extending portions of the streamers in an obvious manner. In either case, a neat and attractive turban effect is created. Due to the liberal length and Width of the streamers, a snug wrapping of the head is assured to prevent the turban from slipping out of place. The appearance of the turban may be enhanced by use of streamers which contrast by color or fabric design from the material of the cap.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that we have provided a turban which, aside from its utilitarian aspect, is not only neat and attractive, but fits well and is easily and quickly applied, and, by the same token is as easily and quickly removed. In practice, the turban is made 3 in different sizes properly proportioned to fit small, medium and large size heads.
We do not of course consider ourselves limited to the precise dimensions or proportions herein given by way of example since these may be varied considerably within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention, 7 a
Having thus described our invention, we claim: A turban comprising a blank of pliant textile Iabric fashioned to the form of a cap to completely cover the hair of the wearer, said blank having a straight frontaledge of a length to ex; tend over the crown of the headdQwn-to the hair line at opposite sides of the face, relatively short and substantially straight side edge portions, and a convexly rounded hemmedbottom' edge; a strip of elastic secured under tension within the hem of said bottom edge whereby said hem is yieldingly -contracted and adapted to lie beneath the hairline at the nape of the wearers neck; and
twoss xeemers each having one end onnect d respectively to the substantially straight short 4 side edge portions of the blank, the connected end of one of the streamers being attached at two spaced apart points to provide a slit between the streamer and the adjacent side edge portion of the blank, through which slit the other streamer is adapted to be passed before the two streamers are brought up at opposite sides of the wearers head and tied together over the brow of the head.
