ROBERT PLATO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 740,913, dated October 6, 1903. Application filed June '5, 1908. Serial No. 160,157. (No model.)
To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT PLATO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county-and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hat, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to summer or outing hats made of canvas or like fabric material, and its object is to provide a new and improvedhat arranged to allow free circulation of air through the crown to keep the wearers head cool and to greatly strengthen and reinforce the rim to prevent the latter from losing its shape.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is apartial enlarged cross-section of the same.
The crown A of the hat has its upper portion A formed of a closely-woven fabric, such as cotton-duck or the like, and the lower or base portion A of the crown is formed of one or two annular bands of an open-mesh fabric, such as flat braids secured to a perforate or wide open-mesh fabric strip, the latter and the braids forming a double perforate band, and the said crown portions A and A are lined on the inside by a lining B, of a wide open-mesh fabric, so as to bring the meshes of the crown portion A in register with the meshes of the lining B for the free circulation of air through the crown.
The perforate base portion A of the crown is preferably secured directly at its lower end to the lining Bgmd the latter and the base portion are connected at their lower ends to a binding-tape O and the inner edge of a rim D, preferably made of three layers of cottonduck and formed at its outer end into a seam containing areinforcing or strengthening tape to hold the same against losing its shape. The bindingtape 0 extends on the outside of the base portion A and. on the top of the inner end of the crown D, thus giving a fine finish to the hat.
Asweat-band F is secured in the usual man her to the rim D, at the inner end thereof, and the said sweat-band is preferably made in three sections F, F and F of which the top and bottom sections F and F are made of leather and connected with each other by the section F made of a perforate band, such as a fiat braid similar to the flat braid used for the crown base portion A Now by the arrangement described the perforate section'F of the sweat-band registers with the open-mesh lining B, opposite the perforate base portion A of the crown, so that air can directly pass to the wearers head at that portion engaged by the sweat-band. It is understood that air can readily circulate up through the crown by the air passing between the sweat-band F and the lining B.
- From the foregoing it'will be seen that the base portion A of the crown, made in the manner-described, obviates the use of the ordinary hat-band, as the open-mesh braids serve as hat-bands, and hence give a fine appearance to the hat.
A hat constructed in the manner described can be cheaply manufactured and allows a free circulation of air through the crown to I keep the wearers head cool, and by having the rim reinforced at the outer edge by the tape E the said rim is not likely to lose its shape in case the hat gets wet.
c Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. .Anjouting-hat provided'with a crown formed of an upper portion, of a closely-woven fabric material, a lower or base portion formed mesh fabric, on which the braids are secured, the said braids forming the hat-band, as set forth.
3. A hat having a crown consisting of an upper portion of a closely-woven fabric material, a lower or base portion in the form of a perforate band, an open-mesh lining for the interior of the crown, carrying the said band, a rim, and an annular binding-tape between the rim and the said lining, as set forth.
4. An outing-hat comprising a rim, a crown having its upper portion formed of a closelywoven fabric, and the lower or base portion formed of a perforate or open-mesh band, an open-mesh lining for the interior of the crown, 15 carrying the said perforate band, and a binding-tape connecting the said rim with the said lining at the outside thereof, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 20 two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT PLATO.
