Description

Jan. 31, 1933. STERN 1,895,593
UNIFORM CAP Filed May 22. 1931 INVENTOR l /beri H. Stern ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 31, 1933 ALBERT R. STERN, F NEW YORK, N. Y.
UniFoieM CAP Application filed May 22,
This invention relates to uniform caps, such as used in police, fire, military, private and other services.
Among the objects of the invention is to generally improve uniform cap constructions of the character described having flattened crown bodies extending beyond the head' bands thereof. One feature of the invent-ion is the provision of a cap having a crown body and head band made of one continuous piece of material forming an improved seamless outer structure. Said improved cap construction comprises few and simple parts which shall be easy to assemble, yet form an attractive appearing head covering, which shall be shape retaining relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and practical and efiicient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention.
Fig. 1 is a central cross-sectional view taken from the front to the back of a cap construction embodying the invention, part of the sweat band being broken away to show the interior construction.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the improved cap.
Figs. 3 and 4: are fragmentary cross-sectional views taken on lines 33 and 44 in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of the improved uniform cap.
Referring in detail to the drawing, denotes a head covering or cap such as used .to form part of a uniform outfit constructed to embody the invention. Said improved cap comprises an outer covering made of a single continuous piece of cloth or felt shaped by blocking process in any well understood manner, to provide a crown body portion 11 havalong the front of the inner side of the crown ing layer 17.
1931. Serial No. 539,167.
ing a relatively flat upper side 11a from the periphery of which extends a looped portion 11?), the latter being integrally formed with a head band portion 12 which is disposed inwardly therefrom. Said cap portion including the top side 11a form a complete seam- .1
less outer structure of single ply material for the cap. 1
A suitable stiffening band 13 may be provided to extend completely about the head opening, that is, the inner side of the head band portion 12, said band 13 being preferably secured in position by suitable adhesive means. A stay pad 14 is provided to extend body 11 from the band 13 to the top side 11a. to retain the front crown structure in an elevated or extended position, and to provide a stiffened anchorage for a buckle or badge 15 as shown in Fig. 1.' The latter has suitable 7 means, as for example, screw attachment 16 which passes through the extended crown portion and said pad. The stay pad 14 may be secured in the hat structure by any suitable means, preferably by an adhesive, and serves to retain the shape of the front portion of the cap yet leaving the extending crown portion 11?) about the sides and back of the cap in looped position thereby providing and maintaining an attractively fashioned head covering. Secured to extend along the stiffening band 18 at the front end of the head opening a cushioning layer 17 may be provided. This layer extends about and above an edge 18a of a suitable peak or visor 18. The latter. may be made of stitched leather and is secured to extend from the front end of the head band by suitable stitches 19, the latter passing through the stiffening band 13 and the cushioning layer 17 so as to secure said visor edge 18a therebetween.
- To finish the head opening of the cap, a leather or like sweat band 24 is provided to overlie the stiffening band 13 and cushion- Said sweat band may be s6:- curcd to the peripheral edge 12a of the head band 12 and the cushioning layer 17 by suitable stitching 21. An extensible chin-strap 22 may be provided to extend about the front 104} of the cap over the visor 18, the opposite ends of which are pivotally secured by anchoring buttons 23. The latter have suitable attaching portions 23a extending through the band cap structure. Said portions 23a may comprise bendable wires which lie beneath the sweat band as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 to 4.
To prevent the inner side top 11a from becoming stained from perspiration, a suitable moisture-proof lining 26 may be removably provided to lie against the inner side of the crown top 11a. Spaced eyelet openings 25 may be provided at the side of the crown body portion above the head band 12 for ventilating the inside of the cap as is shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
The cap 10 is thus seen to comprise few and simple parts which are assembled to form a neat appearing head covering. Time and labor are saved in manufacturing the improved cap since the outer structure is formed of one continuous piece of material without seams usually required to shape same yet providing a relatively intricate shape having a flat top side on the crown portion, and
i a head band portion, the crown portion at the front being elevated while that extending about the side and back of the cap is looped over the head band.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a uniform cap in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the ac companying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as'new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A uniform cap comprising a seamless outer structure fashion-ed with a substantially flat upper side, a looped peripheral portion and a head band portion having a head opening of relatively less area than said side, said structure being reinforced by stiffening means adhesively secured on the inner side of said band, a sweat band secured to the peripheral edge of said head band extending into the head opening, a cushioning layer interposed between said bands along a front region of the cap, and a visor secured to said structure between the head band and said layer at the front region.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ALBERT R. STERN.
