UNITED STATES HARRY JACOBS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAP.
Application filed June 18,
To 11 whom it may concern Be it known that I. HARRY James; a citizen of the Fnited States. residing at- Pliiladelphia. in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in caps of the well known type having a flexible head band adapted to conform to the head of the wearer. a stiff vizor extending from the head band and being non-yielding in edgewise directions. and a flexible crown portion extending from the head band and overhanging the vizor.
The invention aims primarily to improve the construction of the vizor and its relation to the head band so as to provide a cushioning effect between the head of the wearer and the edge portion of the stiff vizor adjacent thereto for the ease and comfort of the wearer of the cap when it is in service; and. to this end. the invention consists in the novel construction. combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention.
Figure 1 is a bottom view of a cap embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the same.
Figure 3 is a top view of the cap.
Figure -1 is a sectional detail. on line 1-4 of Fig. 3. showing one of the fastening devices for connecting the crown of the cap to the vizor.
Figure 5. is a diagrammatic view of the vizor. showing its cut away portion with relation to the line of the head-band.
Referring to .the drawings. 2 designates the head band of the cap. 3 the crown portion and 5 the vizor.
The outer portionG of the head band 2 is formed of the fabric of which the main body of the cap is made. and the inner portion 7 of the head hand 2 is formed of leather and constitutes the usual sweat band. the entire head band 2 being flexible and easily conformable to the head of the wearer of the cap.
The crown portion 3 forms a continuation of the fabric forming the outer portion 6 of the head band 2 and it may be constructed in any known or convenient manner.
1921. Serial No. 478,471.
It is madefull and loose and it overhangs the vizor 5. as is common in caps of this well known. general character. I
The bottom of the outer portion 6 of. the head band 2 is turned inwardly and upwardly. and it and the inner portion 7 of the head band are sewed together by suitable stitches R. A narrow strip 9 of suitable stiffening material is usually sewed to the upturned bottom of the outer portion 6 of the head band 2 and extends around the same between its outer and inner portions 6 and T. respectiyely. to give it slightly added stiffness and stability.
The vizor 5 is formed of upper and lower layers 10 and 11. respectively. of fabric and an interposed layer or member 12 of cardboard or other suitable stifi' material which is non-yielding in edgewise directions. The fabric forming the layers 10 and 11 is of the same character as the fabric forming the crown portion3 and the outer portion 6 of the head band 2: and the vizor 5 is attached to the head band 2 between the points 13 and 11 by having edge portions of the upper and lower layers 10 and 11 of fabric inserted between the outer and inner members 6 and '7 of the head band 2 andsewed to the bottom of the outer member 6.
The main body of the vizor 5 or that portion thereof which is occupied by the member 19. is stiff and non-yielding in edgewise directions: and the remaining crescent shaped portion 15 of the vizor between the head band 2 and a line of stitches 16. which is not occupied by the member 12. is relatively soft and yielding. for purposes presently appearing.
The member 12 is held in place by and between the upper and lower layers 10 and 11 of fabric which are sewed together by the line of stitches 16 and by a-line of stitches which extends around the free edge portion of the'vizor. forming a pocket which is occupied and filled bv the member 12-.
The layers of fabric Hi and 11 forming the yielding portion 15 of the vizor are sewed together by several-lines of stitches which are located between the head band 2 and the line of stitches 16 for rendering the yielding portion 15 more stable.
It will be observed that the line of stitches 16 and the adjacent edge portion of the stiff member 12 curve gently away from and back to the head band 2. providing the crescent-shaped outline for the yielding portion r 15 of the vizor 5, and that the side parts of the stiff member 12 or stiff portion of the vizor 5extend to the. head band 2, and that the central part thereof is spaced from the headband, being connected thereto by the interposed yielding portion 1 5.-
It will now be understood that theflexible I head band 2 will-i readily conform to the v Vizor, While the cap head of the wearer of the cap entirely around the same Without interference from the sti-fl portion 12 of the vizor 5, because the portion 15 of the vizor 5 will yield toward the stiff portion 12 within the entire crescentshaped region occupied by the portion 15 and thus form a cushion between the head of the wearer and :the stiff portion 12 of the retains allthe advantages of a stiff Vizor.
The side parts of the forward portion of the crown 3 are connected .to the side parts of the stiff portion 12 of the vizor 5' forwardly of the yielding portion 15 thereof by suitablefastening devices 17, which, as herein illustrated, are snap fasteners of usual and well known construction. This arrangement of the fastening 'devices' 17 rela-'" tively to the, yielding portion. 15 ofthe vizor holds the crown?) in symmetrical con dition withease and conifort to the wearer 7 of the cap when it is in service, due to the fact that the pull of the crown 3 between the back of the cap and the fasteners 17 is cushioned at the forehead of the wearer by the yielding portion 15 of the izor while holding the crownin place upon the head.
' Lclaim as my invention A 1.' A cap, comprising'a crown portion, a
eluding a stiffener, having a cut-out portion extending along the edge, inwardly between the horns-of.the crescent, the cloth covering extending over said cut-out portion and stitched together at such cut-out portion with rows of stitching substantially paralleling the edge of the cut-out portion of the stiffener. v
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hereto. l 1
