Description

F. OSTOLAZA Jan. 10, 1933.
HAT
Filed July 25, 1931 Patented Jan. 19, 1933 UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE FRANK OSTOLAZA, OF ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO MEXICAN AMERICAN HAT COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION 0F MISSOURI HAT Application filed July 23,
This invention relates generally to hats, and particularly to a floating sweat band therefor.
In accordance with the usual construction the sweat band of a hat is applied directly to the crown, and in view of the fact that all crown materials, whether felt, straw or fabv ric, are generally to some extent stiflened, it is apparent that the sweat bands of such hats do not conform to the configuration of a particular head upon which they are worn. This generally results in an excessive pressure both at the front and the back of the hat which, especially in hot weather, has a tendency to cause headaches and such discomforts. Furthermore, hats as usually constructed with the sweat band attached directly to the crown are extremely uncomfortable in hot weather due to the fact that insuflicient ventilation of the crown thereof is provided for, and such lack of ventilation results not only in a severe discomfort, but oftentimes has detrimental effects upon the hair in view of the fact that perspiration of the scalp is not evaporated.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a hat in which a sweat band is spaced from the crown in order to overcome the objectionable features referred to above.
Another object of this invention is to provide a hat having a narrow flexible sweat band so that the area of contact between the hat and the forehead is relatively small.
A further object of this invention is to provide a hat having an adjustable sweat band spaced from the crown of the hat.
Other objects will become apparent to those skilled in the art when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of a hat constructed in accordance with this invention, looking into the crown.
Generally stated in accordance with this invention a hat is provided with a relatively narrow flexible sweat band in the region of the forehead, which band may be adjust- 1931. Serial No. 552,570.
ed by any suitable device in order, not only to vary the size of the hat in order to render it adaptable to heads of various sizes, but also to vary the space between the crown for the hat in order to vary he ventilation of the head.
Referring particularly to the drawing for an illustrative embodiment of this invention, a hat is shown provided with a crown 1 and a brim 2. About the lower portion of the crown 1 and in the region of junction between the crown and the brim 2, the usual hat band 3 may be provided. An eyelet 4 is provided at one side of the crown extending through the band 3 and the lower portion of the crown 1.
A sweat band 5 which in accordance with this invention is relatively narrow and is preferably formed of a flexible material, such as leather or fabric, is secured to the interior of the crown as at 6 by stitching or by any other suitable method. In accordance with this invention the stitching along the area 6 is for a relatively short distance so it is apparent that the sweat band 5 is not connected directly to the crown in the region of the forehead but is entirely separate therefrom. At the opposite side of the crown from the stitching 6 the eyelet 4 is provided through which the extremity 7 of the sweat band may extend. A suitable buckle or other adjusting device 8 may be provided on the exterior of the hat which buckle may be secured to the crown by any suitable means, such as for instance by an auxiliary strap 9 secured to the hatby means of stitching 10. It is to be understood, however, that the stitching at 6 which permanently secures the floating sweat band 5 at the one side may be dispensed with, and an arrangement similar to that on the other side of the hat, including the eyelet 4E and the adjusting device 8, be provided in lieu thereof.
With a hat constructed as above described,
it is apparent that the sweat band 5 may be.
adjusted by manipulating the buckle 8 so as to vary the spacing 11 between the band and the crown, thus varying the ventilation to the head, and at the same time adapting the hat to heads of various sizes.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that many modifications of the hat and floating sweat band arrangement hereinbefore described will present themselves to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of this invention. It is to be distinctly understood, therefore, that the invention is not limited to the specific details hereinbefore set forth, but that such modifications or the use of such individual features or su'bcombinations of features as do not depart from the spirit of this invention are, although not specifically described herein, contemplated by and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A hat having a crown, and a sweat-band secured to the inside of the crown, said sweat band having a forehead-engaging portion separated from the forward part of the crown continuously from side to side of the hat, the crown extending forwardly beyond said forehead-engaging portion of the sweat band so as to provide an elongated ventilating space of substantial width between the crown and the sweat-band along the forehead of the wearer.
2. A hat having a crown, a sweat-band secured to the inside of the crown, said sweatband having a forehead-engaging portion separated from the forward part of the crown continuously from side to side of the hat, the crown extending forwardly beyond said forehead-engaging portion of the sweatband so as to provide an elongated ventilating space of substantial width between the crown and the sweat band along the forehead of the wearer, and means for adjusting the sweat-band to adjust the width of said space.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature this 8 day of July, 1931.
FRANK OSTOLAZA.
