Patented May 20, 1930 PATENT OFFICE JOSEPH ERARIO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HEAD GUARD Application led July 5, 1928. Serial No. 290,615.
This invention has relation to head gear to be worn by athletes or others engaged in sports, gaines or contests, and has for its object the provision of a safety hood or helmet of novel construction, embodying features intended and adapted to secure greater safety and comfort to the wearer than the head gears heretofore produced.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of features hereinafter described in detail and recited in the claim.
The head gear of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forminv part of this specification in which,
Figure 1 is a side view of the head gear applied to the head of a wearer;
Figure 2 is a rear View;
Figure 3 is a front or face view;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side view of chin and cheek protecting elements;
Figure 5 is a sectional view through part of the head gear.
The numeral 1 designates generally the body part of the head gear which is in the form of a cap, hood or helmet, comprising the head encircling band 2 with depending cheek guards 3. The upper part of the hood is open as shown at 4 and the side, front and rear portions of the band are connected together by strips 5 of elastic fabric which are stitched together at their intersection forming an open crown which rests upon the head of the wearer. The fore part 6 of the band is adapted to cover the forehead of the wearer to protect the eyebrows and eyelids while the cheek portions 3 reach downwardly at the sides of the face opening below the chin line and terminate in tabs or extensions 7, 7 one of which is provided with a slit 8, and thel other with a strap 9 which. when the guard is worn, is passed under the chin of the wearer. through this slit- 8, from the inner side, then through the frame of a buckle 8 attached to a strap 82, which is stitched to and hangs from the cheek section. thence outwardly through a slit 83 formed in a fiap or tab 10 which is stitched to the side of the cheek guard carrying the strap 82 below the ear openings 11 formed therein. The strap 9 is then brought back under t-he chin of the wearer and passes through a loop 8*, stitched to the other cheek guard. Ear openings are provided on both sides of the gear as shown in the drawings, and such flap or tab 10 covers and conceals the buckle when the head guard is worn. K
The body of the head gear is formed of double thicknesses of suitable leather, the inner layer of which is preferably of thicker and softer stock than the outer layer. These layers are stitched together at various points, and quilted together where desired. The back portion of the headgear is fashioned to lit the individual head and completely over.- lies the back part of t-he head.
Between the cheek and forehead sections of the guard a narrow unpadded strip 16 is formed by stitching lines 17, 17 and this strip is perforated as shown at 18 to provide ventilation openings.
The ear pads 13 are formed of separate pieces from the body or head band and are stitched at their margins to the cheek parts, the padded portions extending around the inner parts of the ear openings and being stitched t-o the inner layer, so as to provide adequate safety and comfort to the wearer.
What I claim as new is A head gear comprising a head band reinforced at the rear side by stitching and padded at the front side, padded sections between the front and rear sides extending downwardly to protect the cheeks and jaw, a perforated area between the front and cheek pads, the band having side openings surrounded by ear pads, depending flaps on the lower sides of the head gear, a strap attached at one end to one flap, a strap guide on the outer side of the same flap, the other iap having an opening therein for the passage of the strap,
a strap buckle on the outer side of the other fla and another Hap overlying the buckle an slotted for the passage of the strap from the buckle for holding the same flatly against the buckle While in use and the strap end being threaded through the strap guide.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
JOSEPH ERARIO.
