wearer to see United States Patent The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.

The present invention pertains to the art of head covering garments, and comprises "a garment which is adapted particularly to be worn in regions where the weather gets extremely cold. The garment of the invention inhibits impairment of the wearers activities, at the same time protecting the wearer from the cold, and it provides adjustment characteristics that enable the garment to be. worn comfortably in accordance with the normally expected changes in weather conditions.

The primary purpose of the garment is to protect the wearer from the cold, in arctic. climates particularly, and it is provided with various adjustments that enable the garment to be worn comfortably, and. with ample protection from coldand wind, according to weather changes that occur. vided for each baflle 20, inside the fabric of its corresponding side area 17, as seen in Figs. 5 and 6 particularly. When weather permits, a baffle 20 may be inserted into its corresponding pocket 22, where it is out of use and out of the way.

As seen in Fig. 1, the baflle 20 of the left side of the face is inserted into its pocket 22, and the baffle of the right side of the face is extended out of its pocket in position to protect against wind from the right. The garment canbe worn as seen in Fig. 1 when the weather is comparatively mild but the wind is sharp.

Neck flap 23 extends forwardly from the side area 19 at the right of the neck covering fabric, and a similar,

flap extends forwardly from the side area 19 on the left side of the neck. Neck flaps 23 and 24 extend continuously with the fabric of areas 19, and are of the same flexible material. Gusset 25 of flap 23, and like gusset 26 of flap 24, extend upwardly from along the upper edges of their respective flaps, and each is secured by a seam along the forward edge of its corresponding fabric area 17 of the head covering, at a position inside baflle 20.

A similar set of snap-fastener components 31 are companion to components 30, and are adapted to be used alternatively with components 29. Components 31 are located nearer to the end edge of flap 23, and are used when it is desired to close the

Each baflle 20 consists of a bottom panel 32 and a side panel 33, both of them being semi-rigid. The bottom and side panels, 32 and 33, of each bafile 20, are seamed to each other along the edge 34, which forms a fold for the panels to positionthem against each other, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2 A baffle 20 can be folded either in extended position, or when contained in its pocket 21.

Baffies 20 thereby are brought close to each other around thefront of the face, and the wearer of the garment is able to see over the top edges of panels 33, which are located below the level of the eye. The eyes and face of the wearer are well inside the garment, and air entering the garment is warmed by the breath of the wearer before the cold can reach the face and eyes to injure them. With the eyes well shaded within the garment, injury to the eyes from the glare of snow blindness is inhibited.

For further protection from cold that is extremely severe, the garment can be worn as seen in Fig. 4.

As seen in Figs. and 6,, each pocket 22 is formed between the lining 43 and outer fabric 44, which constitute the lining and outer fabric of the hood, and are extended throughout the fabric areas 15 to 19 inclusive. Pocket 22 consists of the inner fabric piece 45, which is secured to the lining 43 along the front edge 21 by seam 46, and the outer fabric piece 47, which is secured to the outer fabric 44 along the front edge 21 by seam 48. Fabric pieces 45 and 47 extend coextensively away from their front seams 46 and 48 far enough to enclose the corresponding bafiie 20, and are secured to each other and to the lining 43 at the rear by seam 49, which is extended forwardly above and below bafiie 20 to the seams 46 and 48 and the front edge 21 of the hood, seam 49 thereby closes pocket 22 around the baffle on all sides except at the opening between the seams 46 and 48 at the front.

Fabric web 50 of flexible material is secured inside pocket 22 near the rear thereof, by means of seam 51, which secures the fabric web to the inside piece 45 as seen in Fig. 6. The width of web 50 corresponds with side panel 33 of bafile 20, and at its forward edge is secured to the rearward edge of the battle. When a baffle 20 is inserted into its pocket 22, its web 50 folds upon itself in the manner shown, and when the bat-fie is withdrawn from its pocket the web 50 locates its rearward edge at the front edge 21 of the hood and slightly inside the pocket 22. In the disclosed embodiment, bafiies 20 are detachably attached to the garment, whereby they can be removed from the garment when weather conditions render them useless. At its front edge, web 50 comprises the set of snap-fastener components 52, to which companion snap-fastener components at the rear edge of baffle 20 are removably applicable, for attaching or detaching the baffles 20 at will.

The structure that is disclosed presents one practical embodiment of the invention, the scope of which is determined by the accompanying claims.

I claim:

1. A head covering garment comprising a hood member including top and side portions defining a face opening, a pocket in each side portion of said hood having a mouth proximate such face opening, and a bafile flap extending outwardly from each pocket through the mouth thereof, the dimensions of each of said flaps relative the dimensions of its pocket being such that a substantial portion of each of said flaps is retractible into its pocket through such month and a substantial portion of said flap can be positioned extending outside said pocket, and means to secure each of said flaps in its pocket.

2. Ahead covering garment comprising a hood member including top and side portions defining a face opening, a pocket in each side portion of said hood having a'mouth proximate such face opening, a baffle flap extending outwardly from each pocket throughthe mouth thereof, the dimensions of said flap relative the dimensions of its pocket being such that a substantial portion of each of said flaps is retractible into its pocket through such month and a substantial portion of each of said fia-ps can be positioned extended outside said pocket, and means to secure each of said flaps in its pocket, said means comprising a web, means to secure one end of said web to the interior of said pocket, and means to secure the other end of said-web to said baffle flap.

3. A head covering garment comprising a hood member including top and side portions defining a face opening, a pocket in each side portion of said hood having a mouth proximate such face opening, a baffle flap extending outwardly from each pocket through the mouth thereof, the dimensions of said flap relative the dimensions of its pocket being such that a substantial portion of each of said flaps is retractible into its pocket through such mouth and a substantial portion of each of said flaps can be positioned extended outside its pocket, and meansto secure each of said flaps in its pocket, said means comprising a web, means to secure one end of said web to the interior of said pocket, and means to removably secure the other end of said web to said baffle flap.

A head covering garment comprising a hood member including top and side portions defining a face opening, a pocket in each side portion of said hood having a mouth proximate such face opening, a semi-rigid bafile flap extending outwardly from each pocket through the mouth thereof, the dimensions of each of said flaps relative the dimensions of its pocket being such that a substantial portion of each of said flaps is retractible into its pocket through such month and a substantial portion of said flap can be positioned extended outside said pocket, and means to secure each of said flaps in its pocket, said means comprising a web, means to secure oneend of said web to the interior of said pocket, and means to secure the other end of said web to said 5. A head covering garment comprising a hood member including an outer fabric providing top and side portions defining a face opening, a lining fabric coextensive with said outer fabric, a pocket in each side portion of said hood betweensaid outer fabric and said lining fabric, each pocket having a mouth proximate such face opening, a semi-rigid baffle flap extending outwardly from each pocket through the mouth thereof, the dimensions of each of said flaps relative the dimensions of its pocket being such that a substantial portion of each of said flaps is retractible into its pocket through such month and a substantial portion of each flap can be positioned extended outside its pocket, and means to secure each of said flaps in its pocket, said means comprising a web, means to secure one end of said web to the interior of said pocket, and mating snap fastener elements secured to the other end of said web and to one end of said baffle flap for removably connecting said web and said bafiie flap.

6.
