HAT
Filed July 2, 1928 Pirro/@Nav Patented Feb. 25, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFllcE EDWARD WITTCOFF, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO SUPERIOR HAT COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI HAT Application led July 2, 1928. Serial No. 289,652.
This invention relates generally to hats and more particularly, to a certain new and use ul improvement in hats of the type commonly worn in the summer-time or 1n warm 5 or hot climates. e
My invention has for its chief object the provision of a hat of the type stated with an attached visor or eye-shade, the head-encircling band of the visor being adapted for adjustment for regulating or varying the size of the head-opening of the hat to adjustably it heads of different sizes and also to provide Ventilating apertures for the hat.
And-with the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in'the novel features of form, construction, arran ment, and combination of parts hereina er described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing,-
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a hat embodying my present invention;
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view of the hat' and n Figure 3 is a fragmental detail sectlonal 2.5view of the hat on approximately the line 3 3, Fi re 2.
Referrmg now more in detail and by referencecharacters to the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention, the hat proper includes a crown A' and a suitable relatively transversely wide or extended brim B, the crown A and rim B being of any suitable contour and shape and being preferably, for summer wear, constructed of straw or other woven fibrous material, and the hat being preferably decorated by the usual crown-ribbon C.
Forming part of the hat, is an eye-shade and Ventilating-providing member D, which includes a visor-proper 1 and a head-encircling band, the latter, in turn, comprising spaced non-elastic iexible strap-sections 2-2 connected at their ends, as at 3., 3, by elastic flexible inserts 4, 4, the visor 1, which is of usual contour, as shown, and constructed of celluloid or other analogous preferably transparent material, tinted in a shade of green or other proper color which will effectively counteract the glare or actinic rays of the I sun, being disposed at its one or upper margin Iis:
1a between one of thestrap-sections 2 and a sweat 5, and the said one strap-section 2, visor 1, and sweat 5 fixed permanently together, as by stitching 6.
The eye-shade member D, being so formed, is disposed Within the crown A at and around its head-opening and permanently fixed thereto at front and back only, as by threadstitches 7, 7, engaging only the crown A and intermediate portions of the strap-sections 2,v the eye-shade member D being otherwise free and loose from the hat.
Thus the band, which normally is of some? what lesser diameter than the crown A, is adapted, by means of its elastic inserts, to freely give resilientl and to thereby ada t the hat to accommodyate and comfortably t heads of different sizes. At the same time, the openings or spaces, as at 8, 8 between the crown A and the member D at the sides of the hat provide or form air-openings into the crown and thus ventilate the hat adding to its kcomfort upon the head and the visor 1 being also preferably provided adjacent and along its attached mar in l* with a series or row of Ventilating openings 9 for cooling the forehead.
My new hat may be inexpensively and readily manufactured, is comfortable upon the head, freely adapts itself in size, and is efficient in the performance of its intended functions, the brim of the hat being freely iiexible without interference With or by the member D and when turned up permitting upward and straight ahead vision through the visor 1.
I am aware that changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my new hat may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination with a hat, including its crown, of an eye-shade comprising an endless band and a visor fixed dependingly at a margin to a portion of the band, the band being 'sposed within and extending completely 10 around the head-openin of the crown, the.
band being Apermanently ed to the crown at the front and rear thereof only and being intermediately normally spaced from the crown.
2. In combination with a hat, including its ciown, of an eye-shade comprising an endless band and a visor, the band being composed of spaced non-elastic sections and elastic sections inset between and joining the non-elastic sections and the visor being fixed dependingly at a Inarginl to one of said nonelastic band-sections, the band being disposed within and extending completely around the head-opening of the crown with its said'elastic sections disposed at the opposite sides thereof, the band being at its said non-elastic sections only permanently fixed tothe crown at the front and rear there of only and at its said elastic sections being normally free from the crown and adapting the crown and band to fit heads of dierent sizes. Y
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
EDWARD WITTCOFF.
