"This invention relates to head coverings generally, but more particularly'to :head coverings of the type which are made :of :relatively *soft material adapted to be folded or otherwise easily manipulated. The head covering, hereinafter described, is further distinguishable from head coverings of the blocked or molded type, in that *it readily-adjusts itself to conform to a wide range of head sizes, not being limited to one particular head size as is the custom in the blocked type.

As the head covering is foldable, it readily adapts itself to being carried in a handbag or in the pocket of the user, when it is not desired to be worn.

It is recognized that head coverings of this general type have been in use for many years, however, it is a primary object of the present invention to provide such a head covering which is adapted to be manufactured with a minimum of labor and cost.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a head covering made essentially of one piece of material, which is so formed and sewed as to provide an absorptive layer for the perspiration which may be formed on the users forehead.

Still another object of the present invention is to provide a head covering which is supplied with tension bands whereby the head covering is resiliently held in place.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a head covering which will also serve to shield the back of the users neck from dust or wind or sun.

Other objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

Fig. 1 is a plan view of a head covering embodying the features of my invention.

Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing the construction of the absorptive portion of the head covering in greater detail.

Fig. 3 is a view showing the appearance and position of the head covering as seen from the left side of the wearer.

Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3, but showing a r rear view of the method of wearing and fastening the head covering.

Referring more particularly to Figs. 1. and 2, the head covering, designated generally by the numeral I, can be seen to consist essentially of az-rectangular pieceof fiat material 2 which may .be of cloth or-of any substance which is soft or pliable.

A portion of the material is folded and sewed along one of its edges as indicated at 3 to form an absorptive .layer or sweatband 4 consisting of several thicknesses of the material 2. In use, the

sweatband 4 of the head covering 1 lies adjacent the forehead of :the wearer and will'ser-ve to absorb the perspiration which may be formed if the wearer is engaged in strenuous or unusual physical activity.

Interposed between the folds 3 and extending laterally of the sweatband 4 are tension bands or tabs 5 which are sewed or otherwise secured in position on the material 2 as indicated at 6. The tabs 5 are made of an elastic material such as rubber or rubberized fabric so that they will stretch to accommodate themselves to the wearers head and will hold the head covering l in place under definite tension.

Mounted on the tabs 5 are a plurality of fasteners I, such as snap fasteners, two of such fasteners being mounted in spaced relationship on one of the tabs 5 and one of the fastening members being mounted on the other tab 5. The fasteners serve to join and lock the tabs 5 together, as seen in Fig. 4. The fasteners also serve as adjusting means for varying the tension on the tabs 5, as the wearer may utilize the fastener adjacent the sewn end of the tab 5, or may selectively utilize and join only the fasteners at the extreme ends 8 of each of the tabs 5.

In use, the head covering I is placed on the head in such a manner that the sweatband 1 covers the brow and the remainder of the material 2 is permitted to cover the top of the head and drape down along the back of the neck. The tabs 5 are then drawn rearwardly around the head and are joined and fastened in the back of the head by one set or the other of the fasteners I, depending upon the degree of tension desired by the wearer.

It is thus apparent that I have provided a head covering of great utility which may be used by women in the performance of their household tasks and which may also be used by both women and men in their outdoors recreational activities.

The head covering is particularly adapted to ease of manufacture in that it does not have to be cut to any irregular or special shape, instead it is rectangular in shape and has straight, easilycut edges.

The multiple thickness of material in the front portion o the head covering, which serves as a sweatband, contributes to the comfort of the wearer, especially if he is participating in a sports activity such as golf or tennis.

The draped portion at the rear of the head serves to protect the back of the neck from sunburn and the novel fastening arrangement, which combines elastic tabs with spaced fasteners, provides the head covering with a great flexibility of adjustment over a wide range of head sizes while concurrently serving to hold the head covering firmly and snugly in place.

It is to be understood that the form of my invention, herein shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of the parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

A head covering comprising a rectangular piece of material so shaped as to cover the head and the back of the neck of the wearer, one edge of said material being folded upon itself to form a plurality of thicknesses of material said thicknesses of material being sewn together to form a perspiration absorptive band adapted to extend across the forehead of the wearer, elastic bands interposed between said folds and extending laterally from the edges of said material adjacent the firstnamed edge, said elastic bands being sewn in position, a series of fastening elements provided on one of said elastic bands, and a cooperating fastening element provided on the other of said elastic bands whereby said elastic bands may be joined together behind the head of the wearer and over the neck-covering portion at a selected position of tension to retain said head covering in place on the head of the wearer.
