A womans hair is the greatest hazard in her employment on machinery. Yet another object of this invention is to provide a hat of the character described having a stiff, front crown portion to prevent catching of the hat and hair in the machinery, and retain part of the top of the hat off the hair, and a loose top and adjustable back which permits the girl to put in all her loose hair. 7

Still another object of this invention is to'provide on the inside of the. improved hat, means to prevent the hat from sliding over the eyes and blocking the vision should an operator strike a piece of. machinery.

Still a further object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable hat of the character described which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, attractive in appearance, easy to fold so that the hat may be stuffed into a pocket, and which. shall yet be attractive in appearance, and practical and efiicient to a high degree. in use.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts whichwill be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, lll designates a womans work hat embodying the in vention. The same comprises a crown l l and a visor l2. The crown l l comprises a main body portion l3 and a. front. stiff portion I4;

The body portion 13 of the crown comprises a head covering portion I5 of denim or other loose cloth, attached to the stiff crown portion M in the manner hereinafter explained.

The stiff crown portion l4 is'shaped substantially similar to the visor [2. It comprises a sheet l6 of stiffening material, such as superimposed layers of rice net or a sheetof'buckram or the like material. It is covered'by an outer sheet H of denim or other cloth and an inner sheet l8 of cloth. Sheets l8 are stitched to the stiffening; sheet l6 by an upper curved line .of stitching l9. Sheets I1 and. I8 are stitched to the stiffening sheet l6 by a line of stitching 20;. parallel to the base of the crown. Sheets 11 and I8, are stitched together and to covering I5 by a line of stitching 2| following the upper curvature of crown portion I4. v

The visor I2 comprises a stiffening sheet 23 of buckramor the like material covered by an upper covering 24 of denim or the like cloth and an under covering 25 of cloth. The pieces of

24, 25 are stitched together at their rear edges, and to the lower edges of sheets l1, I8 by a line ofstitching 21. There is thus produced. a flexible cloth hinge 29 between the stiff front crown portion M and visor I2. It will be noted that the lower edge of crownportion. I4 and the rear edge of visor portion l2 follow the curvature of the base of the crown at the front of the hat. and that the upper edge of crown portion !4 is curved substantially similar to the front edge'of the visor, so

that said crown portion will fold down into suof head covering portion I5 is cut out to accommodate the crown portion l4.

Stitched to the lower edge of said covering I5 is an outer base band 39 by an upper line of stitching 3|, and a lower line of stitching 32. The band 30 extends around the lower part of crown portion l4 being stitched thereto by the line of stitching 20. Said band 30is also stitched to

Covering portion l5 has a cut out or slit 38 at the back extending upwardly from the lower edge of the crown, as shown in Fig. 3. The band 30, has turned back tabs 31 at the cut out 35, stitched or otherwise fastened to the band as at 31a, forming loops receiving a band 38 of rubher or other elastic or material.

On the inside of the hat is a head size or sweat band 40 stitched at its lower edge to the lower edge of the covering I5 and base band 30. The band 40 is also split at the back, the ends of said band being stitched to the edges 36a at said split 36.

Within the hat is also a band 45 straddling the head and attached at the ends thereof, to the head size band 40 by lines of stitching 45a. .Band 45 comprises a strip 46 of crimoline and a covering strip 41 folded around the edges thereof and stitched thereto as at 48. Band 45 prevents the hat from being pulled down over the wearers eyes.

The stiff visor serves as a guard to prevent the wearers face from getting too close to the machine. The stifi front crown portion l4 prevents the hat from being pulled into a machine. It is high, and thus keeps part of the top of the hat off the hair. The top of the hat is soft and loose and the back is adjustable due to the resilient band 38 to permit the girl to put in all the .loose hair into the hat. Furthermore since the back of the hat is expansible, it will fit various sized heads and will accommodate more or less hair. The hat is also comfortable to wear. The hat furthermore is not tight on the head so that if it is caught it will easily slip off the head and not draw the head toward the machine.

The inner band 45 further will hold the hair down, so that if the girl has a big head of hair the band will help keep all the hair in the hat.

The crown portion l4 may be provided with eyelets 50 for air circulation.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to'be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having'thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A womans Work hat comprising a crown and a stiff visor, said crown having a front stiff portion connected at the lower edge thereof to the visor by a flexible connection and a soft top and back portion stitched to the upper edge of said front stiff portion.

2. A womans work hat comprising a crown and a stiff visor, said crown having a front stiff portion and a soft top and back portion, and a band within the hat, attached at its ends to the sides of the hat and straddling the inside of the hat said band being unattached to the hat and loose therefrom between the attached ends of the band.

3. A womans work hat comprising a crown and a stiff visor, said crown having a front stifl portion and a soft top and back portion, and a band within the hat, attached at its ends to the sides of the hat and straddling the inside of the hat, said band being unattached and loose from the hat between the attached ends of the band said crown being elastic at the back. 4. A womans work hat comprising a crown anda 'stifi visor, said crown having a front stiff portion and a soft top and back portion, and a band within the hat, attached at its ends to the sides of the hat and straddling the inside of the hat, said band being unattached and loose from the hat between the attached ends of the band,

said front stifi crown portion beingsubstantially similar in shape to said visor and being connected at the lower edge thereof to the visor by a flexible hinge connection.

5. A hat comprising a crown and a visor, said visor being stiff, said crown having a stiff front portion, and being soft at the back, said crown having a split at the back extending up from the lower edge thereof, loops extending from opposite' sides of said split, and an elastic band passing through said loops, an inner band stitched to the lower edge of the crown, said band being split at the back and stitched to the edges of the split in the crown.

6. A hat comprising a crown and a visor, said visor being. stiff, said crown having a stiff front portion, and being soft at the back, said crown having a split at the back extending up from the lower edge thereof, loops extending from opposite sides of said split, and an elastic band passing through said loops, an inner band stitched to the lower edge of the crown, said band being split at the back and stitched to the edges of the split in the crown, and a band on the inside of the hat adapted to straddle the head and having the ends thereof stitched to the first band at the side of the hat.

7. A hat comprising a crown and a visor, said visor being stiff, said crown having a stiff front portion, and being soft at the back, said crown having a split at the back extending up from the lower edge thereof, loops extending from opposite sides of said split, an elastic band passing through said loops, an inner band stitched to the lower edge of the crown, said band being split at the back and stitched to the edges of the split in the crown, and a band on the inside of the hat adapted to straddle the head and having the ends thereof stitched to the first band at the side of the hat, said front stifi' crown portion having substantially the shape of the visor and connected thereto by a flexible hinge connection.
