Description

B. LUPO PROTECTOR Feb. 10, 1948.
Filed June 13, 1946 Patented Feb. 10, 1948 UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE, A
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to head coverings or protectors and while not limited thereto the same has particular reference to an improved covering or protector to be worn over the head or hat for protection from the elements or from dust.
The invention has for an object the provision of a protector of the indicated character which is adapted to be conveniently and readily applied in covering relation with the head and to accommodate any size or shape of hat.
The invention also has for an object the provision of a protector of said character having tying end members formed in prolongation of the forward edge portion thereof and which are adapted to extend under the chin of the wearer so as to closely cover the sides of the face.
The invention further comprehends a protector formed with a straight forward edge which also defines the forward edges of the tying end members and rearwardly of said members the protector includes a body portion formed with a curvilinear edge extending about the periphery of the opposite sides and rear thereof so as to provide a flowing edge portion which overlies the shoulder and back of the wearer.
The invention further comprehends a protector which provides a shield for the face and eyes and which may be compactly folded so as to be conveniently carried in a handbag or pocket of a jacket.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a protector constructed in accordance with the invention and illustrated in applied position as a head covering.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the protector on a reduced scale.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the protector may be fashioned from any desired material having the properties of excluding moisture and dampness and which preferably is formed with a glazed or smooth outer surface that readily sheds water, snow and the like.
The protector consists of a main body portion I preferably fashioned from a single piece of material and of a single ply in thickness, and
which is so constructed as to provide in plan a longitudinally extending straight forward edge II and oppositely disposed inwardly extending recesses l2 in the opposite side edges thereof defining parallel edges 13 and M at the opposite sides of said recesses which edges are located parallel with the forward edge II and provide oppositely disposed elongated tying end members l5 in the forward portion of the body In which extend outwardly beyond the opposite side edges thereof. The body I0 is also formed with a curvilinear edge It extending peripherally about the same rearwardly of the recesses l2. The curvilinear edge I6 is of arcuate formation at each side edge thereof from the recesses l2 to the mid point I! at the rear of the protector whereby the body of the protector rearwardly of the tying end members I5 is adapted to cover the head of the wearer with the arcuate edges thereof forming a flowing edge portion which overlies and protects the shoulders and back of the wearer.
The protector is also provided with a forwardly projecting arcuate shaped portion 18 which is adapted to project outwardly over the forehead of the wearer so as to provide a shield for the eyes and face. The shield I8 is preferably formed of superposed plies l9 and 20 which are secured to the forward edge portion of the protector by lines of stitching 2! and with the outer edges of the plies inturned and secured together by a line of stitching 22. The body of the protector as well as the tying end members l5 have their edges inturned or hemmed as indicated by the line 23 so as to provide a finished edging and prevent tearing or raveling thereof.
Constructed in this manner the protector is adapted to be worn as illustrated In Fig. 1 of the drawings as a head covering but it is to be understood that the drawings show one manner of use only thereof and that the protector may be worn and secured in various ways and serve both as a protector for the head and when wearing a hat.
As illustrated the triangular shaped portions adjacent the recesses I 2 extend under the chin of the wearer with the forward edge II of the protector and the tying ends l5 thereof extending downwardly over the sides of the face and cheeks with the tying end members crossing over under the ch n and being drawn back and tied together at the rear to thereby secure the edge portions of the body of the protector in covering relation with the neck and shoulders.
What is claimed is:
In a protector of the indicated character, a body fashioned from flexible water-proof sheet material including a forward medial portion formed with a straight forward edge and oppositely disposed narrow tying end members formed as lateral continuations of said medial portion and with the forward edges thereof as continuations of the straight forward edge of said forward portion and a rear portion connected with said forward portion medially thereof and of lesser width than the overall length of said medial portion and tying end members, said rear portion being separated at the. opposite side edges.- from said tying end members by oppositely disposed recesses extending inwardly in opposite sides thereof in parallel relation with the forward portion and providing a narrow portion therebetween connecting said forward and rear portions and said rear portion havin arcuate peripheral side edges extending rearwardly from said recesses, and an outwardly extending portion secured to the forward edge of the forward portion medially thereof adapted to project over the forehead to provide a shield for the eyes when the garment is applied in covering relation over the head of 5 the wearer.
