Description

April 27, 1954 CARLSON 2,676,325 CAP CONSTRUCTION Filed Aug. 2, 1952 INVENTOR CARI-.80 'F G5 W1 63 ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 27, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CAP CONSTRUCTION Y Julius Carlson, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application August 2, 1952, Serial Nb. 302,338
3 Claims.
This invention relates to caps. It is particularly directed to caps provided with earlaps. Caps with earlaps as heretofore made, usually had th earlaps stitched to the lower edge of the crown of the cap. Such construction caused a bulkiness at the lower edge of the crown. Furthermore, with such construction the ears had to be flattened against the head and tucked underneath th crown so as to get the earlaps down over the ears iwithout bending or cramping the ears.
, It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to obviate the above mentioned diificulties encountered with present caps by attaching earlaps to the crown at points spaced substantially above the lower edge of the crown.
Another object of this invention is to provide a cap of the character described, comprising a crown and a visor attached to the crown, a back band stitched to the crown from one end of the visor all around the back of the crown to the opposite end or the visor, and earlaps attached to the upper edge of the back band on opposite sides of the cap.
Another object of this invention is to provide a cap of the character described, in which the back band is attached at its lower edge to the lower edge of the crown, and said band ibeing otherwise free of the crown, but detachably attached thereto by means of passing through buttonholes at the forward ends of the back band.
Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a cap ofthe character described, comprising a crown with a visor, a back band stitched to the crown, earlaps attached to the upper edges of the back band, and a second band interconnecting the earlaps and foldable down together with the earlaps.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a cap to which is attached a. back band and earlaps detachably attached to the back band so that they may be asily removed therefrom.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a strong, durable cap of the character described, which will be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, comfortable to wear, and yet practical and eflicient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described,
buttons on the crown and of which the scope of invention will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings in which is shown various illustrative embodiments of this invention:
Fig. 1 is a top perspective view of a cap embodying the invention with the earlaps folded over;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view through an earlap and part of the crown of the cap in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but illustrating a modification;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view through an earlap and a portion of the crown of the cap shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a partial view similar to Fig. 3 but illustrating yet another modification;
Fig.6 is a cross-sectional view through an earlap and part of the crown of the cap shown in Fig. 5; and
Fig.}'7 is a partial perspective view illustrating yet another modified construction.
Referring now in detail to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, in designates a cap embodying the invention. The same comprises a crown I l to which is fixed in the usual manner, a visor l2. 7
Stitched to the crown of the cap and extending upwardly from the lower edge thereof, is a :back band IS. The back band l3 has its lower edge stitched as by stitching 14 to the lower edge of the crown. The back band l3 terminates at opposite sides adjacent the rear ends of the visor I2. Its upper edge and front ends are stitched as by stitching l5 to the crown.
Attached to the upper ends of the back band l3 at the sides of the hat are a pair of earlaps It. The earlaps I6 may have a fur or wool piling or other soft material I 1 at its outer surface (when the laps are folded upwardly). The rear ends of the laps iii are interconnected by a second back band I 8 which is foldable away from the crown together with the earlaps I6.
It will now be observed that the laps [B together with the back band [8 may be folded downwardly. Such construction removes bulkiness from the lower edge of the crown. Furthermore, sufiicient room is given for the ears to project above the lower edge of the crown without necessity for the ears to be crushed or bent vby the earlaps.
A strap 20 may be stitched to one end of the lap It for attachment by snap fastener means 2| on a buckle 22. The snap fastener 2| on the buckle 22 may be a female fastener for attach,
3 ment to a male Iastener 23 on the opposite earlap 16.
In Figs. 3 and 4 there is shown a cap Illa similar to the cap l except that the upper or second back band l8 of cap I!) is omitted and the back band [3a of cap 10a which corresponds to the back band 13 of Fig. 1, while being stitched at its lower edge to the crown by stitching Ma, is free of the crown at it upper end. However, the back band [3a may be provided at its forward ends with button holes 25 to receive buttons 26 stitched as at 21 to the crown of the cap.
In Figs. and 6 there is shown a cap b embodying the invention and illustrating a further modification. Cap 10b is similar to the cap 10 with the exception that the back band I8 "is omitted.
In Fig. '7 there is shown a cap l0c embodying the invention and illustrating another modifica tion. The cap Hlc comprises a visor I2 attached to a'cr'own H. Stitched to the crownis a back band l3. Stitched to the sides of the back band are buttons 20. Detachably attached to the buttons are earlaps 2 l. The-earlaps 2| are formed with button holes 22 to receive the buttons 22.
It will be noted that the earlaps 2| are detachably attached and easily removable. Snap fasteners or other quickly detachable fastening means may be substituted for the buttons and button holes.
It will thus 'be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are "achieved and which is well adapted to meet the c'onditionsof practical use.
As various possible embodiments might' be made of the above inventiongand 'a'svarious changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all "matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not'in a limiting sense.
Having thus'describe'd 'my invention I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
