HEADGEAR Filed Dec. 15, 1935 INVENTOR 3 #2244010 W:
struction which is Patented June 4, 1935 UNITED STATES HEADGEAR Herman Julich, New Rochelle, N. Y. Application December 15, 1933, Serial No. 702,517
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in headgear, more particularly caps of the type known as berets, and has for its particular objects the provision of an attractive and cheap hat conself-adjusting within a limited range of sizes. Further objects of the invention are hereinafter set forth.
I am aware that heretofore it has been proposed to provide adjusting means, such for example as buckles and draw strings for accommodating caps to fit heads of different sizes, but such adjusting means have proven unsatisfactory, especially when it has been attempted to adjust a cap equipped therewith to fit the smallest size of head for which it was intended, as in accomplishing such adjustment a gathering of the marginal portions of the crown at intervals around such margin resulted and consequently, such cap was either extremely uncomfortable to the wearer thereof or else was unattractive in appearance.
My investigations have led to the discovery that the automatic adjustment of such headgear can be accomplished without the annoying gathering of the cloth in proximity to the margin of the crown through the employment of a head band of elastic webbing which is of limited elasticity and consequently adapted to accommodate itself to heads within a relatively restricted range of sizes, such head-gear being comfortable to the wearer, extremely durable, attractive and simple and cheap to manufacture.
My invention is fully set forth in detail in the,
following description and drawing forming a part thereof in which latter Figure 1 is a perspective view of a beret embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic, longitudinal section of a beret embodying my invention, showing the head band thereof in its normal or unstretched condition;
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view, essentially similar to Fig. 2, except that the head band is shown in an abnormal or stretched condition; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing and the construction shown therein, the reference numeral 1 designates the crown of a cap of the beret type and 2 the lining thereof, the same being bound together at their margins by a strip of tape 3, which latter is secured thereto by stitching designated by the reference letter a. The head band 4 of elastic webbing that is of limited elasticity is in turn stitched to said tape, said lining and the crown by a line of stitching bin such a manner that normally said head band is of substantially cylindrical configuration and extends normal to the plane of the head opening in the crown, as indicated by the reference letter as, shown in Fig. 2, designating the normal diameter of the head band when the same is unstretched, and the reference letter 11 designating the diameter of such head band when the 0 same is expanded to accommodate itself to a head of a size somewhat larger than the head band is normally adapted to fit when such head band is in the unstretched condition shown in Fig. 2.
It is essential that the head band be of sufficient width, desirably about A to 1" so that the upper portion of such band which, as stated, is stitched to the tape 3 and is in a substantially unstretched condition, will be well out of contact with the head of the wearer and not under tension, while at the same time the lower portion will be in engagement with the head of the wearer and be capable of stretching to accommodate itself to a limited extent to different sizes ,25 of heads. Consequently my cap is at all times entirely comfortable to the wearer thereof, beside being attractive in appearance, irrespective of the fact that the head upon which the same is worn may vary a few sizes plus or minus from the size of the unstretched head band, since there is no tendency for the upper margin of the head band to at any time gather or become wrinkled irrespective of the size of such head.
Since my improved head band is formed of elastic webbing, desirably of the well known type that is substantially unaffected by the weather, there is no tendency owing to the porosity thereof for the same to cause the head on which it is worn to perspire as would be the case were a rubber band employed. Furthermore, a band of virtually unlimited extension or elasticity, such as rubber band, would become ruptured after but a short period of use owing to the frequent stretching thereof beyond the normal 45 limit of elasticity.
. While I have described my invention as applied to a hat of the beret type, it is of course applicable to caps and other shapes of headgear.
Various modifications of the construction herein described which are within the scope of the appended claim may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to obtain by United States Letters Patent is:
A cap of the beret type, the crown of which is composed of relatively inelastic fabric and has a head-receiving aperture therein, a lining covering the inner surface of said crown and extending to the margin of said aperture and an annulus formed of tape secured along one longitudinal margin thereof to the margins of said fabric and to said lining by a row :of stitching extending around the margin of said aperture,
a head band, comprising an annulus formed of elastic webbing capable of limited extension, whose normal outer periphery substantially equals the inner periphery of said aperture and said head band also being secured by a separate row of stitching to the fabric of the crown, said lining and to the other longitudinal margin of said tape, which row is below the first mentioned row of stitching.
