Another object of this inventionis to provide a'tro'pical hat which is-of suchco'nstruction and material that there "willbe' a, minimum amount'of heat transferred the'rethrough to the headofvthe" wearer;

Yet another objectof this'inv'ention is to providea' hat whichiis cooler to wear than existing forms of tropical -hats;

I have observed that hats made of white mate= rial; and preferably" white sheet material; are cooler thanhats made of' dark material dueto' their repelling rather than absorbing heat; I" also *findtha-t even if thehat is made of a" white sheetmaterial its efficiency is considerably iless e'ned if the hatba'nd on the inside' thereof is made-'of a: darker material unless some provision is made for maintainingthe hat'b'and in spacedrelationship to the-main body of the hat.

Itis accordingly the aim of this invention to" provide a hat-'whereintthe'outer and main-bodyv ofthe" hat will-"repel heat; and wherein" the hat' band'on'the interior thereof is so'supported that itlikewisewill not absorb any appreciable amount of heat.

In accordance with the "generalf-e'atures of this invention there is provided a hat' comprisingia" main body including" integral crown and: brim portions *made fromwhite plastic sheet and a'hat band inside the body; at substantially the junc' tion of the portions thereof and spaced therefrom so as'ito be out-ofdirect contact Withthe same; theband being" so connected to the body'thata minimum amount of heat will: be transferred thereto;

In accordance with other features of 'thisim vention I provide several forms or my novel-hat which differ principally from each other in the manner in which the hat band is supported-on the main'body of the hat;

I also contemplate thatthe-band l'5'*m'a'y-'- 3 be corrugated as indicated at 22 so that it will have some elasticity in accommodating itself to the head of the wearer.

The spacing between the band attachment tabs or extensions [6 serve as air circulating passageways so that air may freely circulate through the dome portion H of the hat.

In the modification shown in Figures 3 and 4, the main body of the hat is designated generally by the reference character and may be made of the same material as the body It) in the first form. This main body includes a dome or crown portion 3| and an annular brim portion 32 terminating in a continuous curled edge 33. Positioned inside of the hat at the junction of the crown and brim portions, as in the case of the first form, is an annular head or sweat band 35 which is maintained out of contact with the body 38, except where it is attached to the curled edge 33. This band 35 has an upper curled or turned edge 36 for reinforcing the same and in addition, has a curved annular supporting flange 38 terminating in a curled edge 49 nested inside of the edge 33. The flange portion 38 may be provided with a plurality of holes 4! through which air may circulate into and through the crown portion 3|.

As in the case of the first form, the hat band 35 is provided with a leather chin strap 62 having its ends attached at 53 on opposite sides to the band 35. The legs of this strap 52 may project through apertures 39 in the flange portion 38 on opposite sides of the head band 35.

I also propose to make the head band 35 yieldable by providing it with corrugations 44.

In this form of the invention, as in the first form, the head band 35 or at least the flange portion 38 may be made of an anti glare material, such for example, as green plastic, so that the band serves the dual purpose of receiving the head of the wearer and also providing a glare shield for his eyes.

I claim as my invention:

1. As an article of manufacture, a hat comprising a main body including integral crown and brim portions made of white material, and a head band inside said body at substantially the junction of said portions and spaced therefrom so as to be out of direct contact with the same and having means for fastening it to one of said portions and which means comprises an annular flange extending as a continuation in one piece from the lower edge of the head band and lock-seamed to an edge of said brim portion, said flange being apertured to provide for the circulation of air therethrough and into said crown portion.

2. As an article of manufacture, a hat comprising crown and brim portions made of white plastic sheet, and a one piece head band and connecting structure inside said hat at substantially the junction of said portions, said head band being spaced inwardly from said junction so as to be out of direct contact with the same, said connecting structure extending as a continuation from one edge of the head band and being fastened to the inside of one of said portions, said head band connecting structure being of aglare-resisting color and being disposed to serve as a glare shield, the opposite edge of the head band having a reinforcing bead formation.

3. As an article of manufacture, a hat comprising crown and brim portions made of white plastic sheet, and a one piece head band, fastening means and glare shield structure, the head band being disposed inside said hat at substantially the junction of said portions and spaced therefrom so as to be out of direct contact with the same, said fastening means extending from the upper edge of the head band and being secured to the inside of the crown portion, said glare shield extending from the lower edge of said head band below a portion of said brim.

4. As an article of manufacture, a tropical helmet type of hat comprising a main body including crown and brim portions, and a head band inside said body at substantially the junction of said portions and spaced therefrom so as to be out of direct contact with the same, said head band being made from thin sheet plastic material and including in one piece therewith integral glare shield means projecting from its lower edge and attachment means projecting from the upper edge of the head band engageable with one of said hat portions to maintain the head band in said spaced relation.

5. As an article of manufacture, a tropical helmet type of hat comprising a main body including crown and brim portions, a head band inside said body at substantially the junction of said portions and spaced therefrom so as to be out of direct contact with the same, said head band being made from thin sheet plastic material and including in one piece therewith integral glare shield means and attachment means engageable with one of said hat portions to maintain the head band in said spaced relation, and a chin strap pivotally attached to said head band within the space between the head band and the hat body.

6. As an article of manufacture, a hat comprising a main body including crown and brim portions, and a head band inside said body at substantially the junction of said portions and spaced therefrom so as to be out of direct contact with the same, said head band being made from plastic sheet material and having extending integrally therefrom and formed in one piece therewith attachment structure extending from one edge of thehead band and generally radially outwardly into retaining engagement with and secured to the hat body whereby to maintain the head band in said spaced relation, the opposite edge of the head band having a reinforcing formation.

7. As an article of manufacture, a hat comprising a main body including crown and brim portions, and a head band inside said body at substantially the junction of said portions and spaced therefrom so as to be out of direct contact with the same, said head band being made from plastic sheet material and having extending inte-' grally therefrom and formed in one piece therewith attachment structure extending from one edge of the head band and generally radially outwardly into retaining engagement with and secured to the hat body whereby to maintain the head band in said spaced relation, said attachvment structure comprising a plurality of spaced tabs formed as return bent loops engaging the hat body at their terminals and affording large ventilation spaces therebetween, and a chin strap attached to the sides of the head band in the space between the head band and said junction of the hat portions.

' 8. As an article of manufacture, a head band for use with a hat comprising crown and brim portions, the head band being adapted to be mounted at substantially'the junction of said portions, said head band being made from sheet plastic material and having one edge curled over to afford a reinforcement for such edge to stiffen the same, the opposite edge of the head band having integral generally radially outwardly extending structure constructed and aranged for attachment to the hat body for supporting the head band within the hat and in spaced relation to the surrounding portion of the hat body.

An article of manufacture according to claim 8 and characterized in that: the attachment structure on the head band comprises a plurality of spaced upward extensions from the upper edge of the band and which extensions are turned outwardly and then downwardly and attached to the inside of the crown portion of the hat adjacent to juncture with the brim portion, while the lower edge of the brim has the curl reinforced edge,

and the lower reinforced edge of the head band has a forward eye shade extension portion arranged for disposition in spaced relation below the adjacent juncture of the crown and brim portions.

An article of manufacture substantially according to claim 8, further characterized in that: the upper edge of the head band is formed with the curled reinforcement and the lower edge has the outwardly extending attachment structure which comprises an annular supporting flange adapted to engage retainingly with the outer edge of the hat brim.

As an article of manufacture, a head band for use with a hat comprising a body having crown and brim portions, the head band being 7 adapted to be mounted adjacent the junction of said hat portions, said head band being made from thin sheet plastic material and having the upper edge reinforced and the lower edge of the head band having an annular outwardly extending supporting flange for attachment to the hat brim, said flange having respective chin strap apertures adjacent the opposite sides of the head band for accommodating the legs of a chin strap therethrough.

As an article of manufacture, a tropical helmet type of hat comprising a main body includin crown and brim portions, a head band inside said body at substantially the junction of said portions and spaced therefrom so as to be out of direct contact therewith, said head band being made from thin sheet plastic material and including in one piece therewith at the upper edge thereof a plurality of upwardly and outwardly extending and then downwardly turned attachment extensions secured to the inside of the crown portion adjacent to the junction of the hat body portions, the lower edge of the head band having extending from the forward portion thereof and formed in one piece with the head band a glare shield extension disposed below the adjacent portion of the juncture of the body portions, and a chin strap attached to the head band at the outer sides thereof.

As an article of manufacture, a tropical helmet type of hat comprising a main body including crown and brim portions, a head band inside said body at substantially the junction of said portions and spaced therefrom so as to be out of direct contact with the same, said head band being made from thin sheet plastic material and including in one piece therewith a combined integral glare shield and attachment flange extending from the lower edge of the head band and attached to the brim portion of the hat body,

- and a chin strap attached to the head band at the outer side thereof, said flan e being apertured to accommodate the chin strap.
