APPLICATION FILED JULY 13. 19M.

HAT SWEAT-BAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept, 211, an.
Application filed July 13, 1914. Serial No. 850,660.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED E. HALBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful ImprovementinHat Sweat- Bands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hat sweat-bands, and particularly to a sweat-band that will minimize the pressure on the head of the wearer or distribute it so that the blood will circulate freely throughout the scalp and thereby furnish nourishment to the hair and upper part of the head and scalp. As usually constructed, hats and caps have been provided with sweat-bands of leather or other material fitting closely to the head of the wearer, thereby exerting pressure in a continuous plane about the head which tends to compress the veins and retard the circulation of the blood, thereby withholding from the upper part of the scalp a large portion of the nourishment which it should receive, thus working injury to the scalp and the growth of the hair.
In United States Letters Patent No. 662,645, issued November 27, 1900, I partially overcame the objection above stated by providing a sweat-band which would exert pressure at intervals only in the direction of its length about the head of the wearer, and it is particularly my desire at this time to add an improvement to the structure set forth in said Letters Patent. Like the sweat-band described in said Letters Patent, my present invention consists of a sweat-band corrugated in the direction approximately at right angles to its length on the layer or part resting against the sides and back of the head and reinforced with a similarly corrugated layer of thin sheetmetal or the like to cause the corrugations of the sweat-band, which rest against the sides and rear of the head, to retain their shape and not to flatten under pressure, and also to have that portion of the sweat-band which rests against the forehead smooth and free from corrugations,-but at the same time have the corrugated metallic reinforcing,
portion thereof continue the full length of the sweat-band.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view;
- my improved sweat-band in position therein.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A, represents a hat. I B, i is my improved sweat-band. The sweat-band B is formed of an inner drip or layer, 6 of some soft material. such as leather or cloth, and an outer layer 6 of a hard and preferably flexible material. Any sufiiciently hard material suitable for the purpose may be employed for the layer 5 though I prefer the use of thin sheet-aluminum on account of its lightness and flexibility. This strip or layer b may be of the same or of a less width than the layer or strip 5 The parts or layers 5 and b may be cemented together if desired. The layer b is corrugated or fluted throughout its entire length, and the layer b is similarly corrugated or fluted, except the portion 5 thereof which rests against the forehead of the wearer, which is left plain or unfluted. This sweat-band may be attached to the hat by stitching iii the usual manner.
When the hat isworn the sweat-band will contact with the head at intervals only along the length of the band, and at that portion of the band where the inner layer is not corrugated, the pressure will be similarly distributed at intervals, but the plain surface of the inner layer prevents the forehead of the wearer from being marked by a direct contact with the corrugated portions of the hat-band. By this arrangement a comparatively small proportion of the blood vessels running to the upper part of the scalp will be sub ected to pressure. I prefer to form the head-engaging parts of the sweat-band by means of the corrugations shown, though any other suitable form located at intervals along the band may be used, although care must be employed in manufacturing the sweat-band so that the contacting parts do not extend diagonally with relation to the hat-band.
It will be readily seen that with this construction and arrangement, when the hat is worn there is provided a sweat-band that ofiers very'little resistance to the free circulation of the bloodto all parts of the scalp "by Letters Patent, is:
V Asweet-band, having an innerlayerof "soft inaterial and anouter leyer of rigid strengthening material, said ngid layer being'b'entto form rigid transverse head-engaging corrugations t'hrol'lghout its entire 1ength, and said soft inner layer being pro vided throughout its length, except in the part thereof intended to rest against the forehead of the wearer, with transverse cor- 'rugations co-ineident with the corrugations of said rigid strengthening layer.
In testimony whereof I have. hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses,
FREDE. HALBERT.
