This invention relates generally to headwear and, more particularly, to a certain new and useful improvement in hats and suchother types of relatively stiff headwear that are usually equipped with a sweat-band.

My present invention has for its chief object the provision of a hat of the type stated having a sweat-band attached to and suspended from and within the crown in such manner as to support the hat comfortably on, and provide for Ventilation to, the head.

And with the above and other objects in View, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts presently described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing,-

Figure 1 illustrates in partly broken side elevation a hat of so-called helmet shape equipped and provided with a suspended, ventilation-providing sweat-band of my invention;

Figure 2 is an inverted plan view of the sweatband equipped hat;

Figure 3 is a fragmental sectional view of the hat of Figures 1 and 2;

Figure 4 is an inverted plan view of a hat equipped with a slightly modified form of sweatband embodying my invention; and

Figure 5 is a iragmental sectional view of the hat of Figure 4.

Referring now more in detail and by reference characters to the drawing, which illustrates practical embodiments of my invention, A designates a hat of any standard shape and of any suitable material. In the present instance, the hat A is of so-called helmet shape, is constructed of paper-pulp pressed or molded to the desired form and contour, and comprises a brim I and a crown 2, the latter being relatively rigid and having a, head-opening 3.

Riveted or otherwise permanently fixed at an end, as at 4, to the crown 2 at suitably spaced points located preferably in the forward and rearward portions of the hat and at a suitable distance upwardly from the plane of the headopening 3, so as to depend within the crown 2, are strap-sections B lengthwise substantially rigid in structure.

5, 5, of any suitably flexible material, such as leather, joined together in spaced relation at their respective ends by one or more connecting lengthwise resilient or yielding strips preferably of elastic webbing 6, and to and flatwise upon the outer face of the band-sections 5, the strap-sections B are at their respective lower or depending ends, stitched or otherwise permanently xed, as at 1.

Normally, it may be said, the band C is diametrically of somewhat lesser dimension than the diametrical dimension of the crown headopening 3, and by means of the supporting straps B, the band C is suspended within the crown 2 in inwardly spaced relation from the wall of the crown, and the band C, in turn, through the straps B, supports the hat on the head of the wearer. The band C, further, will comfortably, by means `of its elastic sections 6, accommodate, within limits, heads of different sizes, and the space 8 intermediate the band C and the wall of the crown provides at all times for full head ventilation.

If desired, and as shown in Figures 4 and 5, the band C may be constructed of a single section 5 oi' leather, whose ends are adjustably connected by a lacing 6', the band C having a so-called flap 9 stitched or otherwise Xed thereto along its upper margin and upon its outerface, to which flap the several straps B are at their respective lower ends xed, as shown.

In either form, the hat and its sweat-band are of simple inexpensive structure and fully accomplish the object stated.

It is to be understood that minor changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the hat and its sweat-band may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described Without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-

1. A hat including a rigid crown, a fabric-like sweat-band adjustable in diametrical dimension for fitting heads of different sizes and normally of reduced diametrical dimension relatively to, and annularly disposed horizontally within the crown, and means for suspendingly securing the band to, and in spaced relation throughout its width and perimeter inwardly from, the wall of the crown, said means comprising a plurality of separate flat lengthwise substantially rigid straps disposed in spaced relation` one from the other and lengthwise extending vertically with respect to and within the crown, and eyelets disposed in the crown in a spaced annular series and providing Ventilating openings into the crown at points spaced upwardly from the upper margin of the sweat-band, said eyelets also ing relationship within the crown, said means comprising a plurality of separate flat lengthwise substantially rigid straps disposed in spaced relation one from the other and lengthwise extending vertically with respect to and within the crown, and members disposed in the crown in a spaced annular series for providing Ventilating openings into the crown at points spaced upwardly from the upper margin of the sweatband, said members also engaging the straps at their respective upper ends for securing the straps to the crown and each of said straps being attached at its lower depending end to the band.
