Our invention relates to hats that are adapted to be tilted to various adjusted positions in all directions and the objects of our invention are:

' First, to provide a hat that is adapted to fit various size and shaped heads of the'wearer;

Second, to provide an adjustable hat of this class in which the cover and crown portion may beshifted into tilted relation in substantially all directions and will remain'in such tilted position;

Third,,to provide an adjustable hat of this class which may be tilted to various positions without shifting the band of the hat or the sup- .port on the head and while the hat is positioned on the head;

Fourth, to provide an adjustable hat of this class which may be used for a sun shade or may be used for army purposes for protection against flying projectiles or other flying matter;

Fifth, to provide a hat of this class which ventilates the head of the wearer under the cute hat cover; and

Sixth, to provide a hat of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, easy to adjust, eflicient in its action and which willnot readily deteriorate or get out of order.

With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, our invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:

layers la and lb secured together so that it is relatively stiff, but flexible enough to yield to the shape of the head. Interposed between the two sections la and lb and extending to the lower side are the opposite ends of the main support members 2'- and 3 which are relatively rigid members which extend upwardly in curved form and cross at the center of the upper side and form the support for the crown and cover. Positioned under these main support members 2 and 3 and with its lower edge interposed between the members la and lb is the hair retainer 4 which is a foraminous or net like member in crown like form and is adapted to hold the hair of the wearer in certain bounds.

Secured to the members 2 and 3 at their central structure is the guide spider member 5 which is secured thereto by means of a screw 5a. This member 5 is spider like in form and is provided with extended fingers 5b which extend outwardly and downwardly in curved form as shown best in Fig. l of the drawing and they are in slightly spaced relation from the members 2 and 3. The extended ends of the fingermembers 5b of the member 5 are adapted to fit between the inner crownt and .the outer cover member I as shown best in Fig. 1 of the draw- This inner crown member 6 is provided with a central opening 60, which is a large opening at the center and it extends outwardly in spaced relation with the members 2 and 3 and past the upper edge of the band I, as shown best in Fig. 1 of the drawing.

Secured to this inner crown member 6 near its periphery by means of small bolts 62) and dividers 60 so that theyare in spaced relation to each other is the outer cover member 1 which forms the hat shade and protector portion. The central portion and the portionaround theinner crown portion 6 conforms thereto and is spaced therefrom so that the'fing'er members 511 may be shifted between the members 6 and I for tilting the members 6 and I relatively to the supporting portion including the guide spider member 5, as

-'I'he member 1 extends outwardly and downwardly in outwardly curved form as shown in Fig. 1 for forming a sunshade or protector as desired and may be tilted sideways, frontways or backwards or on most any angle at most any position,"while the headband l remains on the head if desired for providing protection for the face or any portion of the head and neck as de- I sired.

Inthe modified form shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing the perimeter of the member 6 is shaped to engage the inner surface of the member 1 and may be secured thereto by sewing if made of fabric or other such'materiai or may be secured by welding or soldering if made of metal, the rest of the structure being the same as that disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.

The operation of our adjustable ,hat is as follows: The band I is stretched over the head, the elastic portion Id stretching to fit the head and the band portion yielding relatively. In an adjustable hat of the class described I the combination of, a headband, supports connected therewith and extending upwardly and inwardly therefrom, a spider member secured I to said supports spaced relation therefrom provided with outwardly extending curved fingers, a cover member made of two spaced conforming portions'between which the extended ends of said fingers are mounted, and a hair retainer supported by said headband and extending upwardly and inwardly therefrom and ena cover member made of two spaced conforming portions between which the extended ends of said fingers are mounted, a hair retainer supported. by said headband and; extending upwardly and inwardly therefrom and engaging said supcrown member provided with a central hole, an

outer cover member secured thereto in spaced relation therefrom and tiltably ,shiftable therewith and extending past the perimeter thereof, a guide member provided with extended portions extending in between said crown member. and said outer cover member.

5. In an adjustable hat of the class described the combination of, an inner tiltably shiftable crown member provided with a central hole, an outer cover member secured thereto in spaced relation therefrom and tiltably shiftable therewith and extending past the'perimeter thereof,

a guide member provided with extended portions extending in between said crown member and said outer cover member, and expansible hat band means for supporting said guide member.

6. In an adjustablehat of the class described,

.an inner crown member provided with a central hole, an outer cover member secured thereto in spaced relation therefrom and extending past the perimeter thereof, a guide member provided with extended fingers extending in between said crown member and said outer cover member positioned in the central opening, means for .supporting said guide member including a yieldable headband and relatively rigid supports extending upwardly from said headband to which'said guide member is secured.
