CAP'
Filed sept. 9,- 1939 ffyf Patented Dec. 1, 1942 Mirti Tsar cries 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to an improvement in caps having ear muifs associated therewith. 'Ihe principal purpose of the invention is to provide a cap and ear muff combination embodying a novel and more satisfactory means for rotatably attaching the ear muifs to the cap than heretofore employed.
The present invention contemplates a combination of this character, wherein the cap is provided with a cap band of stiiening material to which are riveted the means for attaching the ear muifs. Each means consists of two metal plates with overlapping ends, a piece of leather or fabric overlying said metal plates on the side of the plates opposite to the cap band, said metal plates and covering being riveted to said cap band. The ear muffs are attached to the cap by a rivet extending through the overlapping ends of said metal plates and a metal plate provided on the ear muif itself.
By this construction the wearing quality of the combination is substantially increased, as the leather or fabric covering placed over the metal plate prevents the latter from wearing through the lining of the cap. The two piece metal plate construction imparts a flexibility to the means for joining the ear muffs to the cap that results in a more comfortable cap for the wearer.
The features and advantages of the present invention will appear more fully as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein a preferred form of the invention is shown. It is to be understood, however, th'at the drawing and description are illustrative only and are not to be taken as limiting the invention except insofar as it is limited by the claim.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a general view of the combination;
Fig. 2 shows a section of the side of the cap with the lining removed, illustrating in detail the means for attaching the ear muffs to the cap;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view along the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawing, the present invention consists of a cap 5 with attached ear muffs 6. Fig. 2 shows the cap material 8, and a cap band 9 to which is riveted metal plates II and I2 by means of rivets I4 and I5. A leather or fabric covering I3 is shown in position over the metal plates II and I2, the covering being held in position by the rivets I4 and I5. The ear muifs are attached to the metal plates, the cap material and cap band intervening, by a rivet I6 extending through the overlapping ends of the metal plates II and I2 and a metal plate 20 attached to the ear muifs. The above mentioned flexibility is obtained by the pivoted r'elationship of the overlapping ends of the two metal plates, the rivet I6 being the pivotal element. A cap lining 2| is provided throughout the interior of the cap.
By this construction the wearing quality of the combination is substantially increased, as the leather or fabric covering placed over the metal plates prevents the latter from wearing through the lining of th'e cap. Increased wearing comfort is obtained from the flexible nature of the ear muff mounting means.
From the foregoing description it is believed that the construction of the present invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in this art.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
Means for attaching ear muffs to a cap having an internal band, said means comprising a pair of stiff plates having adjacent ends overlapped and the opposed ends secured to said band, and an element extending through said overlapped plate ends, band and cap and providing a pivotal connection with an ear muli' externally of th'e cap.
