This invention relates to goggles comprising 1 for each eye a transparent screen mounted in an eye-cup intended to close the orbital cavity of the wearer and to fit on his face, and has for its object the provision of a soft lining for said eyecup which forms a continuous and resiliently deformable flap adapted to adjust itself with the configuration of the wearers face without inconveniencing him.

It has been suggested to provide linings of the kind above referred to by means of a cord made of pile material which however does not show a sumcient consistency, or by a rubber tube which, amongst other drawbacks, has not a sufficient flexibility in the direction of its perimeter and produces annoying compressions; goggles are also known in which a rigid eye-cup is provided with an edge pad made of rubber sponge, but said pad contacts with the wearers face over an extensive surface, this fact being objectionable particularly in warm weather.

According to this invention the drawbacks above referred to are removed in a simple and inexpensive manner, and in the goggles of this invention a rigid eye-cup is extended, beyond its edge adjacent to the wearers face, by a flexible or resilient annular rim whose flaring or spreading-out edge provides a lining which fits on the face of the goggle wearer.

The edge lining thus provides an extension of the wall of the eye-cup which extension is able to bend through a more or less large extent at different points of its periphery and freely adjusts itself and fits on the wearers face with which it contacts over an extent sufficient to seal.

On the annexed drawing is shown by way of example an embodiment of this invention and Figure 1 is a front view of one of the eye-cups of a goggle according to this invention;

In the illustrated embodiment, I is a rigid eyecup which may consist of sheet metal and 2 is a transparent screen mounted in the front edge of said eye-cup; 3 are ports for ventilating the space confined within the eye-cup when it is affixed on the wearers face.

On the rear edge of eye-cup I, that is on the edge thereof intended to lie adjacent the wearers face, an annular rim-shaped flap 5 is fastened by means of a thread 4 passing through holes provided in the wall of eye-cup I and said rim spreads out or flares from its edge at which it is connected with eye-cup l towards its edge intended to contact with the wearers face, it being suitably rounded outwardly in register of last a named edge.

The flap or lining 5 is conveniently made of rubber or of any other appropriate material and it has a comparatively reduced thickness and an arch or gutter shaped cross section as appearing from Figure 2.

In the goggle of this invention the eye-cup thus comprises a rigid front section and a flexible rear section which provides the lining intended to bear on the wearers face by its convex and flaring or spreading out edge.

Owing to its organization the rim or flap 5 is able to bend or flex both in radial and in perimetral directions, while tending by its own resiliency to hold its shape and configuration, and thus it adjusts itself and fits along the full extent of its edge on the wearers face and secures a satisfactory seal contact therewith.

Said annular rim 5 may consist of an integral piece or of a length of a band or ribbon shaped in ring form and having its ends interconnected with each other; further it has a gutter transverse section with its concavity facing outwardly such gutter section being more or less flattened or elongated. 30

What I claim as my invention and. desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. A goggle comprising an eye-cup, a transparent screen mounted in said eye-cup at an edge thereof, a soft pad attached to said eye-cup along its other edge, said soft pad consisting of a ringshaped strip made of flexible and resilient material and having an arcuate cross section with its outer portion curled outwardly for contact with the wearers face. 40

2. A goggle comprising an eye-cup, a transparent screen mounted in said eye-cup at an edge thereof, a soft pad attached to said eye-cup along its other edge, said soft pad consisting of an integral ring-shaped strip made of flexible and resilient material and having an arcuate cross section with its outer portion curled outwardly for contact with the wearers face.

3. As an article of manufacture a pad for the edge of eye-cups of goggles intended to be adjacent to the wearers face, said pad consisting of a ring-shaped strip made of resilient and flexible material and having an arcuate cross section with its outer portion curled outwardly.
