(Cl. 2-7) This invention relates to improvements in hats and more particularly to a hat that is especially adapted to be worn during the hot summer months in the temperate zones or in hot Weather at all times in the tropical zone.

An object of the invention is to provide a hat that may be worn by people of any age or sex.

Another object of the invention is to provide a hat that is so constructed that while it may protect one from the sun, it will also permit the air to have direct contact with the head.

A further object of the invention is to provide a hat that will keep the head cooler so as to lessen perspiration around the forehead and hair line and neck.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a hat having an adjustable sweat or head band so that it may be adjusted to permit the hat to rest loosely on the head or be tightened to prevent a strong wind from blowing the hat oil of the head.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a hat that may be cheaply manufactured in many different colors.

With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a hat embodying the invention;

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the hat of Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the hat of Fig. 1;

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 4--4 of Fig. 2; and

Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, wherein like parts are designated by like reference numerals, the reference numeral is used to generally designate a hat embodying the invention.

The hat 10 comprises a circular crown portion 11 that has a circular dish-shaped center portion 12 which is made of a light weight rigid plastic material. The hat 10 also comprises an oval shaped brim 13 that is provided with a downwardly curved peripheral flange 14. The brim 13 has a circular opening 15 through which the head of the wearer thereof will pass and is separated at the rear thereof to provide

16 and 17, respectively, that are spaced from each other so that the brim 13 can be adjusted as later described. The brim 13 is made of a very flexible plastic material and the brim 13 extends forwardly of the edge of the crown 11 to provide a peak portion 18.

Four L-shaped brackets 19 are secured to the brim 13 on the under surface thereof so that a portion 20 of each of the brackets 19 extend upwardly within the opening 15. A pair of support members 21, made of elongated strips of plastic material, are secured to a pair of op positely disposed portions 20 of the brackets 19. The strips 21 are in crossed relation to each other at their centers and are secured at their centers to each other and to the center of the dish portion 12 of the crown 11 by rivets 22. The strips 21 are also secured to the portions 20 of the brackets 19 by rivets 22 and a piece of felt or other suitable material 23 is adhesively secured over the heads of the rivets 22 to prevent the rivets 22 from scratching the head of the wearer. A flexible sweat or head band 24 is secured to the ends of the strips 21 below the brim 13 so that the head band 24 is positioned below and in alinement with the circular opening 15 of the brim 13. 25 and 26, respectively. The end portion 25 has a threaded open ing 27 and the

25 and 26 are positioned within a U-shaped clamp 28. A set screw 29 having a fiat end portion 30 extends through an opening 32 in a closed end 33 of the clamp 28 longitudinally thereof and through the openings 27 in the

end portions

25 and 26. A fiber washer 31 is positioned on the set screw 29 intermediate of the flat end portion 30 and the closed end 33 of the clamp 28.

When the hat 10 is worn, the head of the wearer will extend through the opening 15 in the brim 13, and the head band 24 will engage the head of the wearer at the usual hat line. If the head band 24 is not sufliciently tight to fit comfortably on the head, the set screw 29 may be adjusted to compress the head band 24. Reversely, if the head band 24 is too tight, the set screw 29 may be adjusted to expand the head band 24. Adjustment of the head band 24 may also be made to prevent the hat from being blown ofi the head of the wearer by a stifi breeze. As the head band 24 is adjusted, the brim portion 13 will also be adjusted to follow the contour of the head band 24.

When the hat is worn, the crown 11 will be spaced from the head of the wearer to permit air to blow between the brim 13 and crown 11, but the crown 11 will always shade the head of the wearer from the sun.

There has thus been provided a hot weather hat that, except for the rivets 22, clamp 28 and set screw 29, is made of plastic. The hat 10 may be made of many different colors in several difierent sizes. The hat 10 may be worn at ball games, picnics, beaches or on the street and it will keep the head of the wearer cooler than if a conventional hat were worn. The peak portion 18 of the brim portion 13 will keep the sun out of the eyes of the wearer and will also shade part of the face of the wearer.

It is believed that from the foregoing description the construction of the hat, as well as the manner of wearing the same, will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:

A hat comprising a resilient crown portion, a brim portion of oval formation having a head receiving opening, said brim portion being split at the rear thereof to provide a pair of spaced end portions, relatively stifi straps interconnecting said brim and said crown in spaced relation, a resilient head band mounted on said straps at the inner periphery of said opening, said head band being split and having a pair of rearwardly extending ends positioned between the spaced ends of the crown portion, and means adjustably inter-connecting said rearwardly extending ends of said head band whereby to vary the effective size of said head band.
