w. w. BEACH HAT Filed March 14, 1951 'TORNEY 3 position above the face and Patented J an. 12, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WINIFRED W. BEACH, 015 NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAT
Application filed March 14, 1931. Serial No. 522,675.
forehead of the wearer is exposed.
I am aware that hats have heretofore been designed comprising crown connected to bonnet-like brims and made of such material that the brims may be pulled downwardly over the face or folded upwardly and held in such position by the stiffness of the material, and I make no claim to such construction, my combination including a cord or ribbon so arranged as to hold the brim in draped forehead of the wearer and also adapted to permit the brim to be dropped so as to shield the forehead and face.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings 1n which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of the invention on the head of a wearer, the brim being shown in downward position to shield the face of the wearer, and the hat having the appearance of a bonnet, and
Fig. 2 is a view of said embodiment with the brim held upwardly in draped position above the face and forehead of the wearer,
" the hat having the appearance of a cloche.
Referring to the drawings, it wil lbe seen that the embodiment therein illustrated comprises a crown member 1 and a brim member 2 which may be integral with the crown or formed separately and united by seaming. The brim is cut with a poke front 2a: and is continuous relatively to the base of the crown, so that it partly shields the back of the neck of the wearer. By means of such construction the hat is well adapted for beach wear and outdoor wear generally where protection from the sun is desired.
It will be noted that the brim 2 at spaced cuts is cut so as to provide loops 3 to receive a ribbon or cord 4, the cord thus being slidably connected to the brim. The said loops are preferably so arranged as to enable the aoplication of the cord to the upper surface of the brim, although this is not essential. If desired, the loops may be formed separately from the brim and applied to the latter by any suitable means.
As hereinbefore stated, when the wearer is subjected to the-rays of the sun, as for example, on a beach or golf links, the hat may be worn as illustrated in Fig. 1. hen, however, there is no necessity for shielding the face and forehead of the wearer the brim may be folded or draped upwardly in a manner, for example, of Fig. 2, whereupon the ends of cord 4: may be drawn and tied to hold the brim in the said draped position.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows A hat comprising a crown member and a brim member formed with a forwardly projecting or poke front and having its edge in a continuous curved line, the poke front being adapted to be held downwardly in position to shield the face of the wearer and adapted to be draped upwardly to expose the face and forehead of the wearer, cordreceiving memberssecured to the brim near its free edge and a cord passing through said cord-receiving members and adapted to be drawn in such position as to hold the brim in draped position and also adapted to be secured in said drawn position, the construction being such that the poke front is held in draped POSlLiOD by tying said attenuated flexible member rearwardly of the hat at the base of the crown without altering the position of the brim below the poke front thereof.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
VVINIFRED W. BEACH.
