This invention relates to protective head coverings and the general object of the invention is to provide a protector or shield adapted to be placed over the head to protect '5 garments from face cosmetics and to protect face cosmetics and dressed hair from becoming smeared and disarranged when trying on garments, the device protecting all garments which are slipped on over the head from contact with lip stick, rouge or powder,

keeping the garments sanitary, saving a considerable amount of money to shops where garments are being constantly tried on and which garments are very liable to become soiled by. cosmetics and have to be reduced in price because of this soiling.

A further object is to provide a head protector of this character which permits a per son to try on various garments and have a.

neat and tidy appearance after thetrying-on process. a

A further object is to provide a device of this character which may be easily put in place, easily removed, which will not disorder the hair, and which will permit breathing' and sight.

strip of material 10 which is designed to extend over the top of the head and partially down the back of the head. To one end of the portion 10 there is attached by stitching or otherwise a face portion 11.

This face portion preferably will be of perforated or reticulated material such as netting, though it might be made of material simply perforated or even material which is imperforate but provided with eye holes and which would permit free breathing. This portion 11 is shown in Figure 1 as terminating in a widened chin engaging portion 12 which is formed with a medially disposed dart 13 so that this portion 12 may be .formed to fit beneath the chin. Strings or tapes 14: are attached to the corners of the chin portion 12. The opposite end of the portion 10 which covers the top of the head and which extends down slightly on the lateral portions of the head has attached to it or formed with it the widened back portion 15 which is designed to cover the back of the head, down to the nape of the neck and to extend over the sides of the head nearly to the portion 11. To this end, this widened portion is provided withjthe laterally disposed ear-like extensions 16. The upper ends of these extensions are curved reentrantly with relation to the side edges of the portion 10 and the lateral edges of the portions 16 are sinuously curved as at 17 and terminate in the laterally projecting tabs 18. The lower end of the portion 10 is upwardly curved at 10a to fit around the neck. 80 The portions 16 may be left unstitched to the part 10 or the protector may be formed so that when it'is sewed it will fit over the head, in which case the ears 16 are stitched to the side edges of the portion 10, the lateral edges 17 of'the ears, however, being left free from attachment to the facial portion 11. The tabs 18 extend around the throat under the chin portion 12 and the protector is held upon the head by means of tapes or strings 14 which pass in opposite directions around the neck and are tied in the back.

These strings might also be tied in front of the chin, if desired. This is purely a matthe sides but with a facial portion which is \free of attachment at the sides so that the protector may be readily slipped over the head and then the facial portion closed down over-the face and beneath the chin and then the protector tied. However, I do not wish to limit myself to sewing the ears 16 to the lateral edges of the portion 10 as the protector might be used by simply applying the portion 10 over the top of the head with the portion 15 extending downward over the back of the head to the nape of the neck and the portions 16 extending forward over the ears and sides of the head. The strings in that case would hold these parts securely in place. Preferably, however, I stitch the curved portions of the ears 16 to the lateral ed es of the portion 10.

11 Figures 4 to 7 I show another embodiment of my invention which is also formed to provide a face portion of perforated or reticulated material and a portion which entirely encloses and covers the top, back and sides of the head extending down to the neck. In this embodiment, there is an intermediate facial portion 19 which is attached in any suitable manner along its up er edge or which may be made integral wlth the forehead covering portion 20. This portion has its lateral margins outwardly curved, the lower end of the face portion bein formed with a dart 21 and being so forme as to fit beneath the chin.

The dart 21 extends up a short distance from the lower end of the face portion but this dart causes the material of which the face portion is made to fold along a median line conforming to the position of the nose.

This face portion may be made of perforated material or reticulated material but is preferably formed with the eye openings 22. The blank from which this protector is made is formed on each side of the face portion 19 with portions 23, these portions being alike. The portions 23 connect at their upper ends with the forehead portion 20 and theinside edges of the portions .23 are curved as at 24, to conform more or less to the curvature of the edges of the facial ortion 19 and the portions 23 terminate in downwardly and inwardly extending tabs 25 having tapes or strings 26 attached thereto. The outer edges of the portions 23 of the blank, before the blank is sewed or stitched to form the complete structure, are outwardly curved slightly as at 20a. This curvature is extended over to the upper edge of the forehead portion 20.

This curved outer portion, however, of each portion 23 is formed with two or more darts 27, the edges of which, when sewed together, curve these lateral portions to fit around the sides of the head. This fitting is further secured by darts 28 at the junction of the curved outer edges 20a with the forehead portion 20. The curved edges 20a of the blank, are to be sewed together along a line 29 as shown in Figure 6 illustrating the rear view of the protector and the sewed darts cause the protector to conform to the shape of the head and fit over the to of the hea ,down to the nape of the neck and downward over the forehead, while the face of the protector extends down over the face of the user, with the chin portion fitting under the chin of the user.

The space between the lateral edges of the facial portion and the inner lateral edges 24 of the portions 23 will be more or less tightl closed depending upon the size of the person s head. The tapes 26 may be passed around the neck and tied beneath the chin or may be tied behind the neck as desired.

Constructed as described, this protector may be readily slid over the head by lifting the facial portion 19 and then the facial portion may be brought down under the chin and the tapes 26 may be tied which will hold the protector in place upon the head.

It will be seen that with both embodiments of these protectors the head is entirely covered. In trying on dresses, the hair will not be rumpled or disturbed, the make-up will not be disturbed, and the dresses which are being tried on will not become soiled by contact with any of the make-up.

While I have illustrated preferable forms of my protector, I do not wish to be limited to these as it is obvious that many changes mightbe made in the details thereof, without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim 1. A protective head covering formed to provide a front, face covering portion and a portion covering the top, back and sides of the head, the upper end of the face-covering portion above the eyes of the wearer being connected to the portion covering the top of the head butseparated from a point above the eyes of the wearer from the portions covering the sides of the head, and strings adapted to encircle the neck and hold the head protector in place.

2. A protective head covering formed to provide a front face covering portion having openings to permit sight and breathing and a portion covering the crown, back, nape and sides of the head, the upper end of the face covering portion being connected to the portion covering the top of the head but separated at a point above the eyes of the wearer from the portions covering the sides of the of the head, around the back head, the Hive covering portion being loose at its lower end whereby it may be gathered -to fit beneath the chin, extend down over the front of the neck, and strings engaging the face covering portion and the neck covering portion and adapted to encircle the neck and hold the head protective coveringin place.

3. A protective head covering comprising a front face covering portion having openings to permit sight and breathing and a portion attached to the face covering portion and adapted to extend over the crown of the head and partially on the sides thereof, the I last named portion being formed with laterally extending ears adapted to ccver the back of the head down to the nape of the neck and the sides of the head, the face covering portion'having a part fitting beneath the neck I and the back covering portion having tabs adapted to fit around the neck and tapes attached to one of said neck portionsand adapted to extend around the neck and be tied to holdthe protective covering in place.

4. A protective head covering formed to provide a front face covering portion having openings to permit sight and breathing, a crown covering portion attached to the face covering portion and lateral portions attached to the. crown covering portion but separated from the face covering portion and adapted to extend over the sides of the face and around the back of the head, the lateral portions being stitched together on a medial line extending down the back of the head, the

lateral portions at their lower ends having extensions adapted to fit over the-neck below the chin and having tapes.

5. A protective head covering formed to provide a'front face covering portion having openings to permit sight and breathing, a crown covering portion attached to the face covering portion and lateral portions attached to the crown covering portion but separated from the face covering portion and adapted to extend over the sides of the face and around the back of the head, the lateral portions being stitched together on a. medial line extendin down the back' of the head, the lateral portions at their lower ends having extensions adapted to fit over the neck below the chin and having tapes, the lateral portions being formed with darts whereby to cause said lateral, portions when stitched together to head.
