Description

Sept. 12, 1967 B. 1.. GREENWALD CAP Filed Dec. 10. 1965 INVENTOR BURTON L. GREE/VWALO B) S l ATTORNEYS.
United States Patent 3,340,542 CAP Burton L. Greenwald, 304 N. Main Ave., Scranton, Pa. 18504 Filed Dec. 10, 1965, Ser. No. 512,992 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-172) This invention relates to a cap, to a convertible ski cap.
The ski cap of the present invention is convertible in that a peripheral band may be manipulated to an up position or a down position. Further, the band may be detached from the remainder of the cap and utilized by itself.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a convertible cap.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a convertible cap having a detachable band adjacent the rim of the ca which band can be used by skiers.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a convertible cap having a portion which can be manipulated to a position wherein it will protect the nose, mouth or chin of the wearer.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, there is shown in the drawings a form which is presently preferred; it being understood, however, that this invention is not limited to the precise arrangements and instrumentalities shown.
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the cap ent invention.
FIGURE 2 is an elevation view illustrating the manner in which the cap may be worn.
FIGURE 3 is an elevation view illustrating another position in which the cap can be worn so as to protect the mouth or chin of the wearer.
FIGURE 4 is an elevation view illustrating the detachable band and the manner in which it may be worn by a skier or the like.
FIGURE 5 is a sectional view in FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 6 is a sectional view through a front portion of the cap and its band in accordance with an alternative embodiment.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like numerals indicate like elements, there is shown in FIGURE 1 a cap designated generally as 10.
The cap 10 includes a crown 12 which may have a tassel or other device 14 at the apex thereof. The crown 12 is cup-shaped and has a rim 16. A band 18 overlies the portion of the crown adjacent the rim. Band 18 has a front portion whose height is less than the height of the rear portion 22.
The rear portion 22 of the band 18 is substantially semicircular. From the ends of the semi-circular portion 22, the height of the band 18 tapers downwardly until it assumes the height of the front portion 20. The height of the front portion 20 is approximately three-quarters the height of the rear portion 22. The band 18 and crown 12 are preferably made from the same material, namely a knitted woolen material which has a certain amount of stretch built in.
The band 18 is separate and apart from the crown 12. In order to retain the band 18 in the position illustrated in FIGURES 1, 2 and 5, cooperating elements are provided on the band and the crown portion. Such cooperating elements, as illustrated, include a button 24 on the and more particularly,
of the prestaken along the line 55 crown portion extending through a buttonhole 26 on the band 18. Buttonhole 26 is located in the rear portion 22 of the band 18 adjacent the rim 16. The thusly-described cap 10 may be utilized in the position illustrated in FIG- URE 2. In cold weather, the band 18 may be manipulated to a down position as illustrated in FIGURE 3 wherein the band 18 overlies the ears and chin of the wearer. If desired, the front portion 20 of the band 18 may be manipulated so that it overlies the nose or the mouth of the wearer. For purposes of skiing or the like, the band 18 may be completely detached from the crown 12 and worn as illustrated in FIGURE 4.
If desired, the front portion of the band may be structurally interrelated as in FIGURE 6. Thus, the front portion 20 may be detachably connected to the crown 12' adjacent the rim 16' by a snap fastener 28. Instead of the button 24 and buttonhole 26, a snap fastener could be used. The snap fastener or button illustrated in the drawing are preferably the same color as the band and/or the crown.
- It will be noted that the lower edge of the band 18 is coextensive with the rim 16. When the band is used as illustrated in FIGURE 4, the band will cover the ears of the wearer but will not overlie the eyes or eyebrows of the wearer due to the fact that the front portion 20 is shorter in height as compared with the rear portion 22. The tassel or decoration 14 may be eliminated if desired or more than one such tassel may be provided.
The present invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof and, accordingly, reference should be made to the appended claim, rather than to the foregoing specification as indicating the scope of the invention.
I claim:
A convertible cap comprising a knitted stretchable generally cup-shaped cr-own, a knitted stretchable endless annular band, said endless band extending around the periphery of said crown and overlying a portion of said crown adjacent the rim of said crown when in an upright first position, said endless band extending downwardly below the rim of said crown around the entire periphery of said crown when in an inverted second position, said band having a front portion and a rear portion, cooperatin-g elements adjacent the of said crown and said band including means on the rear portion of said crown adjacent the rim and on the rear portion of the band for detachably securing the rear portion of the band to the crown, the height of said front portion being less than the height of said rear portion so that said rear portion is adapted to overlie the ears of a wearer and the front portion is adapted to overlie the chin of the wearer when said band is in said second position, and whereby said band may be used by itself when detached from said crown to overlie the ears and forehead of a wearer.
