(Cl. 2-207) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates broadly to womens wearing apparel and, more particularly, to a head covering or scarf of new construction and new appearance which, in certain forms of the invention, additionally provides an ornamental sash worn about the body.

The invention is described in the following specification and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

FIG. 1 is an elevation-a1 plan view of a preferred form of head covering scarf according to my invention;

FIG. 2 is a front view showing the scarf fastened in an initial positon about the head of the wearer;

FIG. 3 is a side view of the head and scarf as shown in FIG. 2;

FIG. 4 is a side view showing the scarf in an intermediate position;

FIG. 5 is a side view of the head and scarf as shown in FIG. 4;

FIG. 6 is a front view showing the scarf in a final position;

FIG. 7 is an elevational plan view showing a modified form of the invention in which a sash is associated with the head scarf, and

FIG. 8 is a view showing the scarf and sash of FIG. 7 on the head and about the waist of a wearer.

My invention, in all of its forms and embodiments, comprises a basic head covering in the form of a scarf which may be placed on or about the head of a wearer in order to cover and protect the head and provide a pleasing appearance. This basic element of the invention is shown in plan view of FIG. 1 and comprises a rectangular piece of fabric 2 having the opposite parallel longer edges 4, 6 and the opposite parallel

The fastening may be accomplished by one or more hooks 16 and eyes 18, the hooks 16 being positoned adjacent end 12 of edge 4 and being fastened to the surface of the scarf which is uppermost or outermost when the edge 4 is placed adjacent the forehead in the manner described above, and the eyes 18 being attached to the opposite or under surface of the scarf adjacent the other end 14 of edge 4. One or more hooks 16 and one or more eyes 18 may be provided at their respective ends of edge 4 in order to accommodate the scarf to heads of different sizes.

3,380,976 Patented Apr. 30, 1968 When the scarf is placed on and about the head in this initial manner it will present the pleasing and ornamental front and side appearances shown, respectively, in FIGS. 2 and 3 and will also provide a covering for the head, protecting it from rain, dust and the like.

In accordance with my invention, I also provide means for causing the scarf to provide an additional ornamental head covering and effect, thus permitting the wearer to have the choice of a second appearance of the scarf when worn. These means comprise an eye 20 which is attached to the surface of the scarf which is the outer or upper surface of the scarf when it is worn, and which is positioned thereon at a point diagonally inward from the end 12 of the edge 4 of the scarf, and a co-operating hook 22 which is attached to the opposite surface of the scarf at or adjacent the corner at end 24 of edge 6, which is the corner diagonally opposite that at the end 12 of edge 4. It will be seen that when the scarf is on the head and the hooks and

16, 18 have been connected at the back of the neck as described above and as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, the corner 24 of edge 6 and hook 22 may be brought forwardly and diagonally across the head to the position of eye 20 where the hook and eye may be connected to give the second ornamental appearance shown in FIG. 4. It will be seen that eye 20 is attached to the outermost surface of the scarf in such a position that when the scarf is worn it will be located adjacent and to one side of the top of the head, while the co-operating hook 22 is located at or adjacent that end of the second longer edge 6 which is on the other side of the cener line of the scarf from the side to which the fastening means 20 is dis placed from the top of the head of the wearer.

In further accordance with the invention the scarf includes means to provide a third head covering and ornamental eifect, thus permitting the wearer to have an additional choice of appearances when the scarf is worn. This means comprises an eye 30 which is attached to the outer surface of the scarf, i.e. the surface which is uppermost when the scarf is worn, and which is positioned thereon at a point diagonally inwardly from the end 14 of the edge 4 of the scarf, and a co-operating hook 32 which is attached to the opposite surface of the scarf at or adjacent the corner at end 34 of edge 6, which is the corner diagonally opposite that at the end 14 of edge 4. 16, 18 have been connected at the back of the neck as described above and as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, and when the corner 24 of edge 6 and the hook 22 have been brought forward and diagonally over the head to be connected to eye 20 as shown in FIG. 4, the other corner 34 of edge 6 and the hook 32 may be brought forwardly and diagonally over the header and connected to eye 30 to give the appearance shown in FIG. 6.

In a second embodiment of the invention the basic head covering scarf which is described above is provided with an elongated and extension part which, after the basic scarf part has been fastened to the head in any of the three ways described above, may be brought diagonally across the body of the wearer and then trained about the waist. A combined scarf and sash in accordance with this embodiment of the invention is disclosed in elevational plan view in FIG. 7 and in position assembled about the body of the wearer in FIG. 8. As clearly shown in FIG. 7, one end part 40 of the combined scarf and sash has the same construction, dimensions and fastening elements as the basic scarf which is illustrated in FIG. 1 and described above, except only the co-operating fastening means 30, 32 which must be eliminated as only the corner 24 may be brought diagonally across the head in this embodiment of the invention. The part 40 of the combined device may be assembled to the head and worn in any of the first two ways described above in connection with the basic scarf, and after the scarf has been assembled to the head in either of these ways the elongated sash part 42 is trained diagonally across the body, as shown at 42 in FIG. 8, and the end of this part is then brought around the waist, as shown at 44 in FIG. 8. 42, 44 are provided with co-operatively located hooks and eyes by which the waist-encircling part may be attached to the diagonally extending part to cause the waist encircling part to be supported. The fastening means for accomplishing this are shown in FIGS. 5 and 6 and comprise, first the fastening means 16, 18, and 22 of the basic head-covering part 40, which correspond to the similarly numbered fastening means which are described above in connection with the embodiment disclosed in FIG. 1. A hook 46 is attached to the part 42 which extends diagonally across the body and is on the outer surface thereof when this part is in place. Other fastening means 48, 50 are attached to the waist encircling part 44 and may be attached to the hook 46 or other hooks in order to support the waist encircling part on the diagonally extending part in the position shown in FIG. 8. After the parts have been arranged in this manner a short belt member 60 may be brought around the adjacent or crossing parts of the diagonal part 42 and the waist encircling part 44 to assist in holding and supporting these parts and also to give an additional ornamental appearance.

While, in the preceding description, I have referred to the fastening means as hooks and eyes it will be apparent that within the scope of the invention snap fasteners, buttons and button holes, and other suitable fastening means may be used without departing in any way from the invention. It will also be understod that the invention is not limted to construction of the scarf, or scarf and sash, from any particular material. For example, plain or ornamented cloth, rainproof material, or any other ma terial may be used.

While I have described and illustrated in this specification certain forms which my invention may take, it will be understood that other embodiments, as well as modifications of those disclosed, may be made and practiced without departing in any way from the spirit or scope of the invention, for the limits of which reference must be made to the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. An article of wearing apparel which, when worn,

forms an ornamental and protective covering for the head, comprising a rectangular piece of fabric having opposite longer edges and opposite shorter edges, one longer edge being of such length that when placed adjacent and over the forehead of a wearer its ends meet at the back of the neck of the wearer, co-operative fastening means on opposite surfaces of the fabric at the opposite ends of said one longer edge for connecting said ends back of the neck to make an initial attachment of the scarf to the head, and two additional co-operative fastening means for making a further ornamental adjustment of the scarf on the head, the first of said additional fastening means being attached to one surface of the scarf adjacent said one longer edge and to one side of the center line of the fabric piece which is parallel to the shorter edges, and the other of which is attached to the opposite surface of the scarf at the end of the other longer edge thereof which is on the other side of the said center line of the scarf from the side from which its co-operatin-g fastening means is displaced.

2. An article of wearing apparel according to claim 1, comprising in addition two further co-operative fastening means for making a still further ornamental adjustment of the scarf on the head, one of said further additional fastening means being attached to the same surface of the scarf as said first additional fastening means and adjacent the same longer edge and to the other side of the said center line therefrom and the other of which is attached to the opposite surface of the scarf at the other end of the said other longer edge of the scarf from the second one of the first additional fastening means.
