HEAD COVERING Filed Dec. 2, 1948 A INVENTOR.
Jffi/A i/zZZA/V CUM Patented Mar. 20, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HEAD COVERING Lydia Whelan, Jersey City, N. J.
Application December 2, 1948, Serial No. 63,057
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a protective hood and mask to be used by women in trying on dresses and other garments adapted to be slipped over the head, so as to prevent cosmetic smears upon such dresses and other garments.
It is an obiect of the present invention to provide a protective hood and mask which is so constructed that it can be easily made secure to the head and wherein its front part can be raised and folded back onto the top of the head at times when it is desired to have more air and when the dresses are merely being viewed without trying them on and wherein the hair and makeup will be protected as the dresses or other garments are extended over the head.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a protective hood for trying on dresses which is of simple construction, easy to apply over the head, has simple means for the securement of the hood to the head and efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the hood removed from the head with the securing strings untied.
Fig. 2 is a front perspective view of the hood secured to a head.
Fig. 3 is a rear perspective view of the hood with the strings shown tied about the neck.
Referring now to the figures, I and II represent side pieces to which is secured a strip 12 which extends over the edges of the side pieces and made secure at the side edges by binding tape as indicated at 13 and I4. The strip I2 has a perforated forward portion I 5 which has integral strings extending from its forward edge. These strings are indicated at l6 and I! and extend outwardly to the sides so as to be extended about the neck of the wearer for the purpose of tying the hood on the head in the manner as ind cated at 3. The perforations in the perforated portion 15 are indicated at l8. With the strings l6 and l 7 tied, the hood cannot be readily displaced and a dress can be readily extended over the head without interfering with the hair or makeup of the wearer.
At times when it is desired to have a better view and more air, the forward portion I 5 can be lifted from the front of the face and merely thrown back over the top of the hood. The side portions l 0 and l I and the strip 1 2 is of sufiicient size that the hood can stay on the head without the forward portion l5 made secure about the neck. The hood is made of thin, lightweight, transparent plastic material, such as may withstand repeated use of the hood. The sides l0 and l I have a curved contour at the top, straight and bottom side edges. The rear edge of the sides l0 and II is curved to shape the back of the head and neck.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of my invention, what is claimed is:
A head covering comprising two oppositely disposed flat side pieces having a curved rear edge continuing into a curved top edge, a substantially horizontally disposed bottom edge and a substantially vertically disposed front edge, and a longitudinal substantially rectangular integral strip, the rear portions of the side edges of said strip being secured to the respective rear and top edges of said side pieces. the forward portion of said strip being free to be brought down over the face of the wearer and securing straps extending integrally from the front edge of the forward portion of said strip to be drawn around said side pieces and the rear portion of said strip thereby securing the head covering upon the head of the wearer, and tape covering the respective joined edges of the side pieces and the strip.
