HHEAD-OOVERING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 19.16.
Application filedDecember 15, 1915. Serial No. 66,910.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, HYMEN ROSENBAUM, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Boston, in 'the'county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented "new and,
useful Improvements in Head -J Coverings, of which the following is a specification.
-This invention relates to improvements in head coverings, especially though not ex clusively, adapted for. the use of automobilists. I v i v The object of the invention'is to provide a neat, comfortable covering, provided with means for shielding the eyes ofthe'wearer from over-strong rays of light, said covering being also provided with means for protecting the eyes from dust and wind.
Another object of the inventionis to provide means for retaining a veilin place on said head coverings.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a head covering embodying my invention, illustrating the means for shielding the eyes of the wearer from overstrong rays of light in its operative position. A veil is also shown in connection with said covering. Fig. 2 is a side elevation similar to Fig. 1 with the light shield thrown back and the wind and dust shield in its operative position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of covering.
Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 is a cap or main portion of the head covering which is preferably constructed to entirely cover the hair of the wearer. The edge of the .cap portion 5 of said covering is contracted by a band 6 which preferably extends entirely therearound, the rear portion 7 of said band being provided with an elastic tape permitting said band to be readily adjusted to difierent sizes of heads. To the fore part of the band 6 is secured a vizor 8 formed of transparent material preferably celluloid, the widest portion of said vizor being at the front, from whence the same gradually narrows until it finally disappears in the band 6, at points 9 in the vicinity of the ears of the wearer of the covering. A strap 10 is formed preferably as a part of the vizor 8 adjacent eech rear portion and at the forward edge of said vizor, said straps being arranged to be bent upwardly from the outer edge of the vizor 8, and the upper ends of said straps are made fast to the body or cap portion of said covering, preferably by'cords 11, looped through eyelets .12 set into said straps, and through corresponding holes in the cap 5. The straps 10, when attached to the cap, form loops 1?) adapted to receive the ends of a veil 15, the main part of said veil extending over the vizor Sand adapted to be drawn down over the face of the wearer as illustrated in the drawings. The ends 14: of said veil extend downwardly from the loops 18 beneath the chin of the wearer at which point they may be tied together.
In addition to forming loops for keeping the veil in place, the straps 1O constitute supports for the vizor 8 retaining said vizor in its proper shape and position. As hereinbefore stated, the vizor 8 is formed preferably in two parts, one part being of trans parent celluloid permitting the same to be drawn down over the face of the wearer to intersect the line of vision and thus form a protection for the eyes from dust and wind. The other part which constitutes a flap or supplementary vizor 16 of substantially opaque material is preferably formed of the same material as that constituting the cap 5 and is also attached to the forepart of the cap along the lower edge of the band 6 to which the vizor 8 is also attached. This supplementary vizor is preferably coextensive with the vizor 8, and is adapted to rest against the upper face thereof and appear as an integral part of said vizor when in such a position. The purpose of said supplementary vizor, is, however, to shut out any over-strong rays of light or sun, or, in other words, shield the eyes from said light, and when employed in this manner said supplementary vizor will be in its lowermost position against the vizor 8 as illustrated in Fig. 1. Under ordinary circumstances, however, the supplementary vizor may not be needed, and therefore said supplementary vizor is adapted to be bent upwardly out of the line of vision of the wearer, as illustrated in Fig. 2, permitting said wearer to look through the celluloid vizor 8 without hindrance. The supplementary vizor 16 may also serve when in its lowermost position as a retainer for the portion of the veil which extends over the vizor 8 and to permit the said supplementary vizor to lie more'smoothly against said vizor at the points adjacent to the straps 10 said supplementary vizor is terminated at opposite ends thereof as at 17, and will not therefore interfere with said straps during the turning up or down of said supplementary VlZOI'.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 3, straps 10 corresponding to the strap 10 in Figs. 1 and 2 are formed preferably in one piece with the supplementary vizor 16 of the covering, said supplementary vizor being substantially coextensive with the vizor 8" thereof with the exception of the portion thereof constituting said straps. vThe ends 1 ing from said straps around the front of ,sald covering over the supplementary vizor Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is: 7
11A head covering having, in combination, a cap, a vizor therefor in two substantially co-extensive parts one part being c0n-' Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, 7
structed of transparent material and the other part of opaque material and straps formed as apart of one of said parts adjacent to the rear portions thereof constructed and arranged to be bent upwardly and attached to said cap to form loops adapted to hold a veil and to reinforce that portion of said vizor of which said straps form a part.
2. A head covering having, in combination, a cap, a vizor therefor in two substantially co-extensive parts, one part being constructed of transparent material and the other part of opaque materiah and straps HYMEN ROSENBA MQ Witnesses SYDNEY E. TAFT, HATTIE E. STRATTON.
