HAT ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
jlatented Dec. 16, 1913.
Application filed November 25, 1912. Serial No. 733,365.
b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lViLLiAM DAVID Rnnsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Taylor, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat lilrttachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an attachment for hats, caps or other head coverings and aims to provide means whereby the rear of the head and the ears may be shielded or protected during cold weather or from rain and snow.
One object of the invention is to provide shielding means of such nature that the same can be collapsed or folded within the hat and be out of the way and out of sight when not performing its usual function.
The invention. resides in the details of construction and novel arrangements of parts hereinafter described in connection with the drawings accompanying this ap plication wherein Figure l is a side View illustrating the attachment in connection with a hat and in head shielding position. Fig. 2 is a front end view of the parts of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the folding supporting arms, and Fig. lis a detail vertical sectional view through the parts of Fig. 3 with the addi tion of a portion of the hat to which the arms are attached.
In the drawings, like reference characters designate like or similar parts throughoutthe several views.
The improvements are capable of attachment to any type of hat such as that desig: nated 1 in the d awings. ()n opposite sides of the hat, preferably mid-way of the ends, is pivoted as by means of a rivet 2 an arm or link 3. To each of the arms 8 is pivoted a second arm at as by means of rivets 5. Arms t are provided with openings adjacent the lower end and in which are fastened flexible cords or the like (5. Around the arms 8 and 4: is sewed or stitched a shield 7 which is preferably of cloth and adapted to cover or shield the ca rs and rear of the head when in extended position as shown in the drawings. This shield 7 is also stitched or sewed to the hat as indicated at 8. At the lower edge the shield is provided with a strip of elastic 9, which elastic at its opposite ends is fastened in the eyes or openings at the lower end of arms 4. The arms 3 and 4: may
be made of any suitable material, but are preferably flexible for a purpose hereinafter appearing.
In use, the shield and other parts are in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings and while in such position, the cloth. shield covers the ears and rear of the head. The cords 6 are tied beneath the chin in a manner similar to the tying of bonnet strings.
By the provision of the elastic 9, the shield will yieldingly and effectively engage the rear of the head to exclude cold air, rain or snow.
The shield and attached parts may be folded within the hat when its use is not required. During the folding operation, the arms 3 and i. are folded relatively and being flexible can be moved within the hat and will conform to the shape of the interior of the hat at the rim, the elastic 9 serving to draw the arms to such position and maintain the same in said position.
It will thus be seen that I have provided an effective head gear for use regardless of the condition of the weather and one which may be readily collapsed and folded within the hat when required and further that I have provided the attachment means of simple construction and accordingly one which may be manufactured and sold at low cost.
As merely the preferred en'ibodiment of the invention has been shown and described and as changes in the details thereof may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, such changes are accordingly reserved.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by letters Patent, is:-
1. in a. head and ear shield attachment for hats, a sheet of material having a free lOWOl. margin and an upper margin secured to the inside of the hat and projecting downwardly toward the neck of the wearer and ever lait not appreciably forwardly of the ears, pivotally connected upper and lower links of flexible material incloscd in the forward margins of said shield, the upper ends of the upper links being pivoted to the hat, an elastic strip inclosed in the lower margin of the shield and having its ends connected with the lower links, and fastening cords secured to the lower ends of the lower links, substantially as described.
2. In a head and ear shield attachment for hats, a shield of material having an upper margin secured to the inside of the hat and projecting downwardly toward the neck of the wearer and over but not appreciably forwardly of the ears, jointed links pivoted to the hat and secured to the forward margins of the shield, an elastic strip secured to the lower margin of the shield and to said jointed links, and fastening cords connected with said links, substantially as described.
3. In a head and ear shield attachment for hats, a shield of material having its upper margins secured to the hat and projecting downwardly toward the neck of the wearer and over the ears but not appreciably forwardly thereof, jointed link means secured to the hatand to the forward margins of said shield, and fastening means secured to said links, substantially as described.
l. In a head and ear shield attachment for hats, a shield of material having an upper margin secured to the inside of the hat and projecting downwardly and over the ears but not appreciably forwardly of the latter, flexible stiffening devices secured to the forward margins of the shield and to the hat and fastening t0 the lower margins of the shield, and fastening cords connected with said stiffening devices, substantially as described.
