UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP]? GOLDMANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,572, dated December 27, 1881.
Application filed November 11, 188i. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILIPP GOLDMANN, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gaps, ofwhich thefollowingis aspecification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of caps which are provided with a protector capable of being lowered to cover the ears and neck, or raised and adjusted upon the rear of the cap body or crown, and to improvements in that class of caps which are provided with a front piece that can be drawn down to cover the cheeks and chin.
The object of my invention is to provide a cap-body with an attached ear and neck protector and a swiveled chin and cheek protector, which are both capable of being folded or otherwise disposed around and upon the exterior of the cap body or crown in the form of a continuous folded band, or drawn downward to protect the ears, neck, chin, and cheeks. These objects I attain by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, showing the protectors folded on the cap-body. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is alongitudina section, showing theprotectors unfolded. Fig. 4 is a side view of the same.
Similar lettersindicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the cap-body, B the cheek and chin protector, and O the ear and neck protector. The cap-body A is equipped with the usual visor, D, and the opposite ends of the protector B are fastened at the sides of the cap-body to the free-end portions of the protector G by buttons E, or other equivalent devices, the intermediate portion of the protector B being left entirely detached. The protector B, however, can also be fastened to the cap-body A instead of to the protector U. The protector 0 serves to cover the ears and neck, anditis so formed that it can be folded upward around the exterior of the cap body or crown, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The protector B swings on the buttons E, and is thus adapted to be adjusted to any desired portion of the face, and especially to the cheeks and chin, when it has been drawn to a lower position, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, whileitis also adapted to be adjusted to the front portion of the cap-body, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The buttons E,or their substitute, are located near one of the longitudinal edges of the protector B, and by this arrangement the latter is rendered capable of being folded when it is adjusted to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
It should be remarked that the protector B can be made detachable.
The ear and neck protector O is composed of a band terminating at the sides of the cap, approximately opposite to the ends of the visor D, and it is secured to the cap-body, on its upper edge and throughout its entire length, by a continuous line of stitching which is curved upward from the back toward the front of the cap, on both sides thereof, or, in other Words, from the middle toward both ends of the protector, as indicated in Fig. 4:. The effect of this arrangement of the attaching stitches is to draw the ends of the protector O upward and inward when it is brought to a lower position, and hence the effect of the protector is thereby materially increased.
If desired, that part of the protector 0 directly attached to the cap-body may be composed of a separate piece of material.
It will be observed that both the car and neck protector O and the swiveled chin and cheek protector B are capable of being folded around and upon the cap body or crown A, and thereby constitute apracticall y continuous band around the same, thereby ornamenting the cap, and at the same time being adapted to be drawn downward to cover and protect the neck, ears, chin, and cheeks, as hereinbefore described.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A cap body or crown provided with the attached ear and neck protector carrying a check and chin protector swiveled thereto, said ear and neck protector being capable of foldingup into a band around the exterior of the crown, and the swiveled cheek and chin protector carried thereby being capable of folding upon the front portion of the cap body or crown and to form a continuation of the folded ear and neck protector, substantially as described.
2. A cap body or crown provided with an attached ear and neck protector and a swiveled cheek and chin protector, both of which are capable of being folded to form a band around the exterior of the cap body or crown, or be unfolded downward around the neck and ears and chin or cheeks, respectively, substantially as described.
3. A cap consisting of the body or crown, the
neck and ear protector 0, attached thereto and capable of being folded around the exterior thereof, and a chin and cheek protector attached to the free-end portions of the neck and ear protector and adapted to swing; thereon, said proteotors being capable of adjustment upon and around the exterior of the body or crown, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. A cap consisting of azbody or crown, an attached neck and ear protector, and a chin and cheek protector swiveled in position, both of said protectors being capable of adjustment 20 upon and around the exterior of the cap-body, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
