To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALTER WILLIAM HOOK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of'Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Cap, of which the following is a description.

My invention relates to caps for general wear, but in its preferred form, and in its entirety especially adapted for ladies wear. Although capable of embodiment in caps of different shapes, the invention lends itself particularly to embodiment in attractive form in fore-and-aft caps as worn by the Belgian Army, .or like caps having a lap or brim ordinarily turned up about the body of the cap, but adapted to be lowered over the ears and back of the head.

An important object of my invention is to provide a lap or :brim on caps of the type indicated, one side of which lap or brim is extended in narrow form to constitute a strap extension continuous with one side of the lap and adapted to lie transversely over the crown of the cap and be detachably secured by fastening means at the outside of the brim or lap at the opposite side of the cap approximately midway between the front and back of the cap, andwhich strap extension is adapted, when the lap is lowered, to be carried beneath the chin and engaged at its free end with the turned-down lap to hold the latter snugly in a manner to afford effective protection for the ears, and the head and neck at the back.

A further object of the invention is to provide a veil attached to the cap at opposite sides, preferably detachably secured thereto and including an elastic veil strap, the veil and its elastic strap being so coordinated with the mentioned lap or brim and its strap extension that the veil and its strap will be concealed within the lap without producing b'ulkiness when the veil is not to be worn, the arrangement being such that the veil may be drawn over the faceof the wearer while the elastic strap of the veil extends about the back of the head in a position to permit the adjustment of the rear edges of the veil along the said strap, whereby the veil will be maintained in adjusted position.

vide a goggle flap at the front of the cap adapted to be folded upwardly within the cap or lowered to a position for use.

More specific objects of the invention are to so arrange the veil attachment and goggle flap that the increased thicknesses presented thereby will be distributed at the front and back of the cap; and to so arrange the several elements of the cap as to permit of the latter being folded into compact form to be carried in ones pocket. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.

Figure 1 is a front perspective view of the cap when worn with the lap or brim in the raised position and the veil concealed within the lap and with the goggle attachment folded upwardly'within the cap;

In carrying out my invention in practice, the body 10 of the cap is given a suitable shape, here shown as of the fore-and-aft type, the crown 11 of which is adapted to fold along the median line. The lap or brim 12 of the cap is wider at the rear portion and increases in width toward the approximate center of the cap, so that the widest portion will be adjacent to the ears of the wearer from which points the lap is of a reduced height toward the front. If desired, the

lap may be fastened at the front to the body.

I provide a veil attachment; in which'the veil 19 isadapted to extend about the back of the cap as indicated in Figs. 2 and 4;. An elastic strap 20is secured to the cap at opposite sides as by loops 20* passed over buttons 21 from which buttons as fasteners, the elastic: strap extends through the side edges of the veil so that the latter may be gathered on the strapto a greater or lesser extent. 'When the veil is not to be worn" it 1s accommodated beneath the lap 12, the veil properi 19 being covered by the wider rear portion ofthe lap while the elastic strap 20 will extend about the frontfof the cap.- in Fig. 3 the elastic strap 20 is shown brought about the back of the head while the veil is brought down over the face, the side edges of the veil being ex tended alongsaid elastic strap, the arrangement serving to insure the retention of the veil as, for example, when motoring. The form of thelap with its strap extension 15 also lends itself particularly to 'the'use of the cap' in motoring as will be readily understood; With a veil attachment as described and the elastic strap 20 thereof secured adjacent to the rear ends of the reduced front portion of thelap 12, the veil and its strap 20 may be brought outward adjacent to the transverse strap 15 and in front of the higher portions of the lap whether the lap V be in the raised or the lowered position, so

that the veil and its retaining strap will assume their proper positions with the minimum distortion of'the lap.

7 At the front of the'cap I provide a goggle j flap 22 secured at one edge to the'interior of the cap to extend about thefront of the lat ter. Said flap is provided with goggles 23 at opposite sides of the median line of the cap and is adapted to be folded within the cap as'in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, or to the lowered position shown in Fig. 1. A cap inclu ding alap extending about the cap and having its greatest height at each side at the approximate center of the cap, a strap extending from the lap at one side at the highest portion of the lap to overlie the opposite side at its highest portion, and a Veil attachment said veil attachment comprising an elastic strap secured at its ends to the cap adjacent to the highest portions of the lap, and a veil engaged at its side edges With said elastic strap adjacent to the fastened ends of the latter, so that the veil and said elastic strap jointly may ex- 10 tend about the cap and be concealed by the lap, the veil and strap being adapted to be brought outward over the front portion of the lap in front of the first mentioned strap.
