In the drawing the numeral 1 designates a ladys hat of any ordinary construction and which has secured to the sweat band and if desired also to the hat, at the front thereof, a plate 2. The plate comprises an angle member, the portion thereof secured to the hat conforming to the shape of the hat, and the offset portion being formed with or having secured thereto a longitudinally extendplate oi* barrette `I have illustrate ing comb member 3. .To the hatbandand if desired tothe hat, at .the rear portion thereof, and at diametrically opposite points upon the rear portion is secured the endshof aii elastic band. In applying the device the hat is so arranged that the teeth of the comb 3 are inserted in the hair' of the wearer atthe front of the head and the hat is then gently pulled down to a comfortable position. The plate 4 is then drawn downwardly from its elastic 4coifinection and brought to a convenient position upon the back of the head oftlie wearer.

' and this is attached in a manner similar to that previously described except that the side comb members are drawn upon their elastic connections and the teeth thereof permitted to be inserted by the influence of the said elastic members into the hair of the wearer at the sides thereof and, of course, withdrawn when the hat is to be removed.

It is to be understood that if desired the stationary comb member may be dispensed with as may also the rear plate or barrette and that in lieu thereof a plurality of elastically secured comb members similar to the members illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 may be employed, the said elastic members having their ends secured in any desired position in the hat and as the said combs are slidably arranged upon the said elastic members it will be noted that the combs may be inserted in the hair at any desired point with respect to the angle at which the hat is to be sustained upon the head of the wearer and with respect to the comfort of the wearer.

In Fig. 8 of the drawings, the stationary comb is dispensed with and the slidable combs l2 are arranged upon elastic members 13 which have their ends secured, as at 14, at suitable points in the hat band. These combs as illustrated in Fig. 9 of the drawings being provided with centrally extending angular elements providing handles 15 whereby the same may be grasped by the operator and readily removed.

While the device has been described in connection with women and childrens head gear, it is to be understood that the same may, with slight modiications, be equally adaptable for use upon mens or boys head gear. It is also to be understood that the comb may, if desired, be constructed of a single element and that the barrette as well as the combs may be arranged in positions different from that illustrated in the drawings.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

1. A hat retainer comprising a horizontally extending comb rigidly secured within the front portion of a hat, an elastic member having its ends secured within the hat, and an arcuate plate provided with spaced holes through which said elastic member is trained whereb said plate will be adjustable longitudinal y of said elastic member.

2. A hat retainer comprising an angular Y plate having its vertical portion secured within the front of a hat, a rearwardly extending horizontally disposed comb rigidly secured upon the horizontal portion of said angular plate, an elastic member having its ends secured upon the inner sides of the hat, and an arcuate plate having its end portions provided with holes through which said elastic member is trained whereby said plate may be adjusted longitudinally of said elastic member.

3. A hat retainer comprising a comb rigidly secured in horizontal position within the front portion of a hat, an elastic member having its ends secured upon the inner sides of the hat, anarcuate plate disposed at the rear portion of the hat and slidably connected with said elastic member, and a pair of combs disposed at the sides of the hat with their teeth in inwardly extendin relation and provided with holes througii which said elastic member is trained whereby said comb members may be longitudinally adjustable of said elastic member.

4. A hat retainer comprising a horizontally extending comb secured within the front portion of a hat, an elastic member having its ends secured upon the inner sides of the hat, and a pair of comb members disposed at opposite sides of the hat and provided at their end portions with holes through which said elastic member is trained, and outwardly extending projections on the backs of said last named combs engaged by said elastic member for urging the teeth of said comb in a direction toward the crown vof the hat.
