SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,263, dated May 6, 1890. Application filed November 13, 1889. Serial No. 330,120. v (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIE FEEY, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hoods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a hood formed of yarn and so knitted as to be adapted to be pulled over the head, entirely covering it, except a part of the face, and covering and protecting the throat of the wearer also.
In the drawings,Figure,1 is a side view of the complete hood. Figf2 is a front view of the same hood. Fig. 3 is a View of the hood drawn over the head of a person, showing how it is to be worn.
The crown A of the hood is formed of closelyknitted fabric so shaped as to fit the head and so constructed that while the fabric is thoroughly flexible it is not adapted to stretch very much. A circular band or border B is attached to the front edge of the crown A, and is constructed of loosely-knitted fabric, preferably ribbed, which fabric is flexible and adapted to yield or stretch and contract considerably. This band B forms the front of the hood and provides an opening in the hood which leaves a portion of the face uncovered when the hood is on the head of a person, in the manner and to the extent shown in Fig. 3. The band B can be made narrow, if desired, so that more of the face will be exposed when the hood is on the head of a person; but it is preferred to have the band so wide as to leave only the eyes, nose, and mouth exposed, as
shown in Fig. 3. A' band O, formed in the same manner as the band B, so as to be flexible and to have great capacity for stretching and contracting,is attached to the lower edge of the crown A, and may be constructed continuous with the band B, as shown in Fig. l, which band O is adapted to envelope the neck when it is drawn over the person and protect the neck from the inclerncncy of the Weather. I also preferably attach two small shields D D to the lower edge of the band O, which shields extend downwardly, respectively, to the front and rear of the hood, as shown in Fig. l. These shields D D may be constructed Of closely-knitted fabric, like the fabric of which the crown A is made. This' hood is knitted integrally by hand or` on a machine. The hood is adapted to be worn alone, or may be used under a hat, bonnet, or other head-covering.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hood consisting of a closely-knitted crown A, a laterally-ribbed loosely-knitted expanding and contracting band B, formed on the front edge of the crown A,having a small central oval or curved aperture for exposing the face of the wearer, a vertically-ribbed looselyknitted expanding and contracting band O, formed on the lower part of the crown A, adapted to pass the head and contract about lthe neck, and downwardly-extending front and rear shields D D, secured to the lower edge of the band'O, substantially as described.
