UNITED STATES insane PATENT OFFICE.
GAP.
Application filed May 15, 1924. Serial No. 713,458.
My invention relates to improvements in caps and the principal objects of my invention are to provide a cap of simple and economic construction, that is made oi light 5 and durable material, and which will hold the hair securely in place. The cap is designed to be worn by females particularly during the hours of retirement while in a recumbent position and is primarily adapted for use by those who have bobbed hair to protect the marcel or other form of hair dressing or waving.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists of the novel arrangement and combination hereinafter described and claimed. These objects are accomplished by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a cap embodying the features of my invention; and
Figure 2 is a view in rear elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawings in which like reference numerals designate like parts, the numeral 5 indicates a crown piece. The main portion of the cap comprises a side piece 6 stitched all around its upper edge to said crown piece and slightly gathered to give fullness as will be readily understood. One of the principal features of the invention is the overlap 7 of the ends 8 and 9 of said upper edge portion where same is secured to said crown piece. It will be understood that the ends 8 and 9 are normally free with the exception of said upper edge portion.
A lace edging 10 is secured to the lower edge portion of the side piece 6 for ornamental effect and forms no part of the invention. A ribbon 11 is secured by stitching 12 at its lower edge all around the lower edge portion of said side piece and its tree ends are extended for the purpose of tying in a bowknot 13. Short pieces of elastic 14; are secured on either side of the rap. Said pieces of elastic are usually inserted between the side piece 6 and the ribbon 11 and are stitched through at their ends, as at 15, to form gatherings as clearly shown in the drawings. Said ribbon and side piece are held together immediately outside of said elastics at the top by stitchings 16 and at the bottom by the stitching 12. The upper edge of theribbon 11 is secured only by short stitchings 17 extending from a point directly above the rear ends of said elastics to the ends 8 and 9 of the side piece 6.
in donning the cap, it being understood that the free ends or" the ribbon 11 are untied, the sides are spread apart with the hands placed inside and the cap is gently lowered on the head without disturbing the arrangement of the hair. The ribbon 11 is drawn until the ends 8 and 9 come together and is then tied at this point' The small pieces of elastic 14 will yieldingly hold the cap in place and at the same time allow the entry or the lingers for the purpose of arranging or adjusting the hair after the cap is secured in place. It will be obvious that the cap may be adjustably made to fit any head.
The cap is usually made of light material such as silk or other net fabric of sufii'cient strength to hold the hair securely in place.
t is primarily intended to protect the marcel or other form of hair arrangement and, at the same time, to save the attendant expense of having to have the hair dressed again. It is not limited to any particular means or method of fastening in the back as it will be obvious that same may be tied in front or on the side.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A cap of the character described comprising a crown piece, a side piece secured at its upper edge to said crown, and having its ends overlapping and stitched to each other at their upper edges only, elastic mem bers adjacent the lower portion of said side piece arranged to form gatherings therein, H
a ribbon stitched around its lower edge to the lower edge portion of said side piece with its ends extending beyond the ends thereof, stitching at the upper edge of said ribbon extending from said elastics to the ends of said side piece, and the free ends of said ribbon adapted to be tied together and in cooperation with said elastics to yieldingly hold said cap in place substantially specified.
