4 Claims.
This invention relates to wearing apparel, especially to head coverings, and more particularly to an article which may desirably have for its body portion a rectangular or other uniplanar portion of suitable fabric, and which may snugly and effectively be applied to the head in the form oi-an encircling head covering or turban.
The turban as such as a head covering is very ancient, and in its most customary form was little more than a tightly fitting skull cap with a sash or shawl wound thereabout. Such a head covering has been adopted from the Eastern countries for contemporary feminine headwear still possessing the inherent structural objection of being in two pieces and possessing the additional disadvantage that without expert manipulation by the wearer, the shape and position of the adjusted turban on the head of the wearer is neither permanent nor stylish, as even expert application of the turban to the head will not avoid disarrangement and slipping after a short time of wearing.
It is an object of this invention to provide a head covering composed essentially of a rectangular or other uniplanar body portion of any desired material which may be easily applied and stylishly adjusted to the head of the wearer.-
Another object of my invention is to provide a turban-like head covering which will retain its initial adjustment to the head of the wearer with relative permanency by means of loops incorporated with the body portion, through which the ends of the body portion may be inserted as they are wound about the head. Another objectof my invention is to provide a turban-like head covering, the crown of which is openable by means of a hookless slide fastener 01' the like, which, when applied to the head, will present a stylish and fashionable appearance in either the open or the closed position. Another object of my invention is to provide size adjustable means for securing the movable portions of the crown, when in open position, in 45 relatively immovable relation to the head of the wearer regardless of the size thereof, thus avoiding the undesirable feature of flapping or dangling. parts and making the turban suitable to be ,used in athletic games or similar activities 50 where a cool and snug fitting head covering is desired principally for control of the hair.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference have been applied to corresponding parts throughout the several views which make up the drawings in which (c1. z 19s) Fig. 1 is a plan view of the body portion of the head covering of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the head covering of my invention applied to the head of a, wearer, but before final adjustment, showing 5 the retaining means for the wound ends of the body portion, and the crown in closed position;
Fig. 3 is a view in top elevation as applied to the head of the wearer with the crown in open position; 10
Fig. 4 is a view in front elevation of the turban in its adjusted position on the head of the wearer withthe crown in closed position;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view illustrating the flap retaining means;
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a further variation of the head covering of my invention;
Fig. 7 is a section through line I of Fig. 6; Figure 8 is a view in side elevation of the embodiment shown in Fig. 6 shown with the crown 20 open;
Figure 9 is a view in rear elevation of the embodiment of Fig. 6 shown with the crownin closed position;
Figure 10 is a plan view of a different embodiment of my invention;
Figure 11 is a view in side elevation of the embodiment of Fig. 10 as applied to the head of the wearer;
Figure 12 is a view in side elevation of the embodiment of Fig. 10, shown with the crown open; Figure 13 is a view in side elevation of a twopiece turban, embodying features of my invention.
In a preferred embodiment of my invention shown in Figures 1-5 the body of the head covering M, which may be composed of any suitable material according to the desires of the wearer or the needs of the trade, and which may assume any suitable shape, is shown as a substan- 4 tially rectangular portion in which the length corresponds roughly to twice the circumference of the human head and the width, roughly to the distance from the base of the skull to the top of the crown.
In the pursuance of the invention a cut or opening I! is provided at approximately the center of the long dimension of the body, extending perpendicular to that dimension into the body II. To the edge of this cut are fastened hookless slide fastener elements I3 which may run along the entire length of the cut and continue away from the cut in either direction along the longitudinal edge of the body for approximately the distance of one-half of the circumference of the human head, and with a sliding element are adapted to form a closure. Positioned upon the opposite transverse edge of the body and on the same surface of the body as the operative element of the runner of the slide fastener are a plurality of holding elements shown in this embodiment as tape members If attached by stitching at each end to the' body proper so that the intermediate portion of the tape members forms a loop which, when the turban is applied to the head, receives and holds in relatively immovable position, the wound ends of the body portion. These tape members are pref- Y erably situated on the body, extending from the aforesaid longitudinal edge to a suitable stitching position on the body portion. These tapes are preferably located for only one-half head circumference on either side of the center of the body portion.
As applied to the head of the wearer, the center of the body portion is conveniently situated at the center of the forehead although obviously this is not intended as limiting since, as will appear, the position of the hat of the invention upon the head of the wearer is a matter entirely up to the wearer.
Preliminary to applying the body portion to the head, the slide fastener i5 is conveniently operated so as to engage the hookless elements l3, which has the effect of folding the body portion substantially in half with the slit closed and part of the transverse edge of-the body joined together.
Thus in preliminary form on the head, the corner l6, may be slightly rounded, will form a peak, and the body will fit over the head with the two ends of the body extending in substantially parallel relationship away from the head at the back or at a point approximately 180 degrees away from the point at which the center of the body is located, as shown in Figure 2.
Each end of the body is then wound about the head in opposite direction and as it is wound inserted under the loops or holding members H which will tend, when the turban is in finally adjusted position, as in Fig. 4, to maintain the entire ensemble in relatively stationary position, and particularly to prevent the wound portion from slipping down from its originally adjusted position.
When the two ends meet again at the point of beginning, viz., the longitudinal center of the body portion, they may be suitably fastened to each other, preferably by tying in a square knot, although other forms of fastening are possible.
The turban may be wound relatively loosely about the wearer's head and still provide a snug and permanent head covering since the loops will retain the wound parts of the body and avoid their slipping down over the lower part of the head.
By operation of the slide fastener, an opening is provided in the crown of the turban which in no way interferes with the configuration of the turban to the head, nor with the position at which the wearer has adjusted the winding portions of the body.
The rounded corners l6 may have attached thereto fastening means l1, shown herein as fabric loops. When the crown is opened and each side folded back, these fasteners may be detachably secured to slidable elements l8 which are mounted on the loops l4. Different sizes and shapes of heads will require different positions of folding for snugness; accordingly, the slidable aroma element ll may be adjusted on the tape N to suit the needs of the wearer.
In Figures 8-9 another embodiment of my inventionis shown. This variation, when worn, resembles in appearance the turban previously described. It is characterized, however, by the feature that it is wound about the head but once, having a supplemental piece I. attached to the lower edge of the body, by stitching or the like, so t as worn, the supplemental piece resembles the windaround previously shown.
In this form, the ends 2| are preferably drawn by folding or stitching, approximately to a point, to facilitate tying the knot 22. Loops II are attached in a similar manner to that, described for loops M, or in other convenient fashion to hold the ends it after tying. In this, as well as in the other forms of the invention, the flaps 28,6! the crown when the crown is open, may be secured to the remainder of the turban merely by insertion under the supplemental portion II.
The slit I2 is shown in Fig. 2 as extending most of the way through the body portion II. If it is desired to prevent the hair from being caught up in the hookless fastener elements, a tongue 2| may be incorporated with the slit I? which will separate the hair from the fastener. In the open position, this tongue will fold back with the flaps of the crown.
If the wearer so desires, a brim of any suitable size or shape may be incorporated with any of the forms of my head covering. Thus in Figures 10-12 is illustrated a half-brim or visor", as applied to the turban. In this form of my invention, the flaps 21 may suitably be held in stationary relation by snapping means 2| attached to the peak in the crown and adapted to be detachably secured to reciprocal snap holders 29 located inthe brim.
Also shown in this form is an elastic size adjuster 30 which is preferably incorporated into the body of the turban directly above the middle of the brim and which tends to hold the turban firmly upon the head of the wearer, while permitting the tying about the head to be relatively loose and comfortable.
Figure 13 illustrates still another embodiment ofmy invention, in which the turban is in two pieces 3|, 3!, one of which winds about the head but once, and is secured by tying in knot 33, or by other suitable fastener, the other, which may be of any suitable shape, being wound about the lower part of the crown through the loops 34 and fastened or tied so that in adjusted position an appearance similar to that shown in Figure 4 is presented. In this form, the flaps 38 in the crown when in open position may be fastened by means heretofore described or may be inserted beneath the secondary binder.
It will then be seen that each of the forms illustrated and described hereinabove comprises a uniplanar band of suitable material having a length several times its width, the band having an intermediate head receiving zone and ends adapted to be wrapped about the head and fastened. In each of the forms shown, the fastener elements are mounted in the head receiving zone adjacent the back edge thereof, and by the manipulation of the slider, this zone is converted into a head receiving recess, the ends then serving as wrap arounds to complete the turban on the head.
While I have illustrated and described in detail certain preferred forms of my invention, it is to be understood that changes may be made therein and the invention embodied in other structures. I do not, therefore, desire to limit myself to the specific construction illustrated. but intend to cover my invention broadly in whatever form its principle may be utilized.
I claim:
1. A turban comprising asubstantially rectangular strip of material, loops fastened to the body of the turban through which the wound portion may be passed. slidable fastener elements on at least two of the loops, an openable crown, fastening means attached to the flaps formed by said opening adapted to be detachably secured to the fastener elements at a position on the loops depending upon the size of the head of'the wearer,
2. A turban comprising a wide band of material having a length several times its width, the band having an intermediate head receiving zone and ends adapted to be wrapped about the head and tied, one longitudinal edge of said band constituting the front of the turban and the other longitudinal edge of the band constituting the back of the turban, a pair of strips carrying hookless slide fastener elements mounted in the head receiving zone addacent the back and extending in opposite directions, and a slidable element engaging said hookless fastener elements and, when so engaging, to cause the material to be folded and to be partially doubled to form a head receiving recess, said recess being adapted to enclose the head.
3. A turban comprising a wide band of material having a length several times its width, the band having an intermediate head receiving zone and ends adapted to be wrapped about the head and fastened, one longitudinal edge of said band constituting the front of the turban and the other longitudinal edge of the band constituting the back of the turban, a pair of strips carrying hookless slide fastener elements mounted in the head receiving zone adjacent the back edge and diverging from apoint inwardly of said edge and extending toward and then in contiguous relation to said edge, and a slidable element engaging said hookless fastener elements and, when soengaging, to cause the material to be folded and to be partially doubled to form a head receiving recess, said recess being adapted to enclose the head.
4. A turban comprising a wide band of material having a length several times its width, the band having an intermediate head receiving zone and ends adapted to be wrapped about the head and tied, one longitudinal edge of said band constituting the front of the turban and the other longitudinal edge of the band constituting the back of the turban, said head receiving zone being I partially divided by a transverse slit extending from the back edge thereof inwardly, each edge of the material formed by said slit and a part of the back edge of the band adjacent the slit having mounted thereon hookless slide fastener elements, and an engaging element adapted to engage the said hookless slide fastener elements and, when so engaging, to cause the material to be folded and partially doubled to form a head receiving recess, the said recess being adapted to enclose the head.
