ADA MARCE LLus MMR/115) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in veils.
More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of Ian improved veil which can quickly and easily be pinned up on a hat without the use of other fasteners and which can be removed as readily and conveniently and which when in place will adjust itself to the particular wearers head to hang properly and attractively and comfortably.
As another object, the present invention proposes forming the veil with a short elastic thread secured at each end to the veil sheet in the center of the sheet adjacent the top edge thereof so as in unstretched condition to gather that portion of the veil sheet disposed between the two ends of the thread in a useful and attractive manner.
Another object of the present invention proposes to construct a veil with two such elastic threads, one disposed adjacent the top edge of the veil sheet and the other adjacent the bottom edge of the sheet.
Still another object is to provide a novel veil which with hats can be hooked on or pinned on with a safety hook or tied back and without a hat can be secured by bobby pin, hairpin, comb, ornamental flower sprays, or other fasteners with or without ornaments.
A further object of the `invention proposes to provide novel means for threading, mounting or attaching the elastic thread or .threads .to ,the Veil.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanyingy drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. l is a pictorial View of a veil constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the veil shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged rear perspective view of one of the end fasteners shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary rear view of a part of the veil.
Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating a modication of the present invention.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a portion of the veil shown in Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
Fig. S is a fragmentary View of another veil structure illustrating another modification of the present invention.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the lveil, in accordance with the first form of the invention illustrated in Figs. l through 4, has a net sheet 15 shaped or formed in any desired veil style.
States Patent Sheet 15 has crossed strands 16 and loops 17 binding the crossed strands 16 together at some of the crossings. Sheet 15 also contains spaced bow forming ornamental loops 18 and rhinestones, chanel dots, or other gems in novelty designs 19 may be secured in interspersed fashion on the sheet being cemented or otherwise fastened to the strands at their crossings.
Net sheet 15 has top and bottom edges 20 and 21, respectively, and side edge marginal portions 22 and 23. Veil fastening members 24 and 25 are secured to the sheet 15 at the side edge marginal portions 22 and 23 for attaching the veil to a hat 26, as shown in Fig. 1.
Veil fastening members 24 and 25 preferably are made of ribbons or flowers, such as velvet faced ribbon or tape, or any other novelty designs or the like, folded over the end strands of the sheet 15 and secured by stitches. A safety hook 27 is secured to and extends from the rear face 28 of each veil fastening member.
Secured also to the sheet 15 are a pair of reinforced fastener members 29 and 3l) in the form of ribbon bows. These members 29 and 31) are secured as by stitches 31 to the strands 16 and are disposed adjacent the top edge 20 of the veil sheet 15 in the center portion 32 of the sheet and spaced from the side marginal edge portions 22 and 23.
Extending between `the two reinforced ribbon or any other novelty means for fastener members 29 and 30 and secured to them, as lby stitches 33, is an elastic thread 34.
Elastic thread 34 has two ends 35 and 36. End 35 is secured to the bow-shaped ribbon fastener member Z9 and end 36is fastened to the bow-shaped ribbon fastener member 3l). The elastic thread extends loosely between the strands 16 through the sheet 15 and through loops 18 adjacent to the top edge 20 of the sheet. Elastic thread 34 in unstretched condition is shorter than the portion of the sheet between its two ends 35 and 36 so that the crossed strands are gathered on the elastic thread. The elastic thread 34 preferably is relatively short so as to be disposed only in the central portion of Ythe veil sheet between the side edge marginal portions 22 and 23.
The operation, application and removal of the veil is simple and convenient. The wearer only has to pin it up on a hat by the safety hooks 27 of the fastening members 24 and 25 as is indicated yin Fig. 1. The elastic thread will stretch tot permit the sheet 15 to adapt itself to the contours of the head of the particular wearer and will hold the veil secured in place in an attractive manner.
The modification of the invention illustrated .in Figs. 5J 6 and 7 is characterized by the provision of a net veil sheet 40 having crossed strands 41, top and bottom edges 42 and 43, side edge marginal portions 44 and 45, and veil fastening members or ribbon tie backs 46 and 47 secured to the sheet 46 at the side edge marginal portions 44 and 45. In addition, a pair of elastic thread fastener members 47 and 48 in the form of ribbon bows are secured to the strands 41 and disposed adjacent the top edge 42 of the sheet 46 in the center portion 49 of the sheet and spaced from the side edge marginal portions 44 and 45'. An elastic thread Sil extends between the two members 47 and 43 with its ends 51 and 52 secured respectively to these members.
Top edge 42 of sheet 4i) is a part of a hem portion 53 of the sheet folded over the elastic thread 50 and secured to the sheet forming a tunnel for the elastic thread. The elastic thread in unstretched condition extends loosely through the sheet and in such unstretched condition is shorter than the portion of the sheet between its ends 51 and 52 so that the strands are gathered on the elastic thread.
A second elastic thread 54 and a second pair of thread fastener members 55 and 56 are similarly mounted on in the sheet 40 adjacent the bottom edge 43 of the sheet. This elastic thread 54 permits the bottom of the veil to be held in the same manner as the top of the veil around a wearers face.
The modification of the invention illustrated in Fig'.- 8 is characterized by the provision of a veil sheet60 having crossed strands 61 and a top edge 62 turned or folded over and secured as a hem or tunnel for an elastic thread 63. The elastic thread 63 is backed and reinforced in the hem or tunnel by a reinforcing strip or sheet 64 preferably made of fine mesh net stiffer than the veil sheet material. t
The modification of the invention illustrated in Fig. 9 is characterized by the provision of a veil 70 having cross strands 71 with loops 72 in the lower portion of the veil and a top edge 73 of finer mesh turned over and secured as a hem over an elastic thread 74. The elastic thread 74 is secured to a gathered fabric ribbon or strip 75 and is secured at its ends to bows 76 which are fastened to the top of the veil. Tie back ribbons 77 provide means to tie the veil in place.
The modification of the invention illustrated in Figs. and 1l is characterized by the provision of a veil 80 having cross strands 81 with a top edge 82 folded over an elastic thread 83 which is encased in a gathered fabric tunnel or tube casing 84. The casing 84 and elastic thread 83 are secured at their ends to bows 85 fastened to the top of the veil.
It will be apparent that the elastic threads may extend through veil openings and loops and that the reinforcement or bindings may be cemented or sewn on or fastened by other means. The elastic threads may extend through upper or any openings of the veilings and through the bindings or veiling. They also may extend through two or more turn over portions of the veiling to give strength to the structure.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A veil comprising a net sheet having crossed strands, said sheet having top and bottom edges and side edge ginal portions 0f the sheet, said elastic thread in unstretched condition being shorter than the portion of the sheet between the two ends of the elastic thread, and a pair of elastic thread fastener members each secured to the sheet Vand to one end of the elastic thread to connect the ends of the thread with the sheet, said elastic thread fastener members being ornamental ribbons.
2. A veil comprising a net sheet having crossed strands, said sheet having top and bottom edges and side edge marginal portions, veil fastening means secured to the sheet at the side edge marginal portions for attaching the veil, an elastic thread loosely extending between the strands through the sheet adjacent to the top edge of marginal portions, veil fastening means secured to the the sheet and having ends connected with the sheet and spaced inwardly of and intermediate said side edge marginal portions of the sheet, said elastic thread in unstretched condition being shorter than the portion of the sheet between the two ends of the elastic thread, said elastic thread being relatively short and disposed only in the central portion of the sheet between the side edge marginal portions of the sheet, and a pair of elastic thread hfastener members each secured to the sheet and to one end of the elastic thread to connect the ends of the elastic thread with the sheet, said elastic thread fastener members being ornamental ribbon bows.
3. A veil comprising a net sheet having crossed strands and loops binding the strands together at some of the crossings, said sheet having top and bottom edges and side edge marginal portions, veil fastening means secured to the sheet at the side edge marginal portions for attaching the veil, an elastic thread loosely extending between the strands through the sheet adjacent to the top edge of the' sheet and having ends connected with the sheet and spaced inwardly of and intermediate said side edge marginal portions of the sheet, said elastic thread in unstretched condition being shorter than the portion of the sheet between the two ends of the elastic thread, said veil fastening means being a pair of ribbons with safety hooks attached to the inner sides thereof.
