FOOTBALL Harrier,
Application led November 20, 1922. Serial No. 802,152.
To all 'whom t may concern: c, Be it known that I, HUGO GoLDsMiTH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county 'of 6 Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Football Helmets, of which the following is a speciication. An object of my invention is to provide a lo foot ball helmet having certain new protective features.
Another object of my vide a device in the parts 16 will retain its position upon the head wearer without the use of chin straps like.
Another object of my invention is to rovide a helme that will fully protect the ase of theskull.
These and other objects are attained by the means described herein, and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a device shown in F` Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fi 2.
'he helmet of my invention' comprises a crown 6 of an inverted cup shape, carrying upon its upper and outer face re-enforcing strips or straps 7, 8 and 9. The edge of the crown 6 terminates adjacent the up er edge of the sides 10 and 11. The rear en of the 4o sides converge and are laced upon one another as shown at 12. The forward ends of the sides are secured upon .a forehead protecting strip 13. The ends of the straps 7, 8 and9 extend beyond the edge of the crown and are secured upon the sides 10 and 11 and upon the forehead protector 13. The sides are dished or cupped outwardly to provide recesses for receiving the ears of a wearer. Portions of the sides extend outwardly and downwardly from the ear protectors and are adapted to lie over the jaw of a wearer thereby affording protection to the jaws. The crown carries upon its inner face a layer of felt or other shock resistin material 14, said material being secured invention is to proof the class referred to, whereareso related that the helmet of the or the -of leather.
upon the crown by any suitable means such as the rows of stitching 15 extending about the edge of the crown and the rows of stitching 16 extendin Y through the straps, the. crown and the fe t. A resilient shock reslstmg ring V17 having a central aperture 18, is secured u n the inner face of the layer orfpad 14 y any suitable means such as rows of stitching 19. The strap 7 extends beyond the lower forward ed e of the crown and has secured upon it ban s 20 and 21. The bands are secured upon opposite sides of the strap, and have their lower ends secured upon one another whereby a pocket is provided between the bands and in this pocket is disposed a suitable shock resisting material 22, such as sponge rubber, etc. The side edges of the bands and the forward edges of the sides are secured upon one 'another as shown at 23. The band 20 is preferably of a soft leather and has its ends secured upon the ends of the band 21 by any suitable means such as a row of stitching 24. A series of auxiliarystraps 25 extends between the crown andthe sldes and co-operate with the straps 7, 8 and 9 in securing the crown and sides upon one another. The lower edgesof the bands 20 and 21 are secured upon one another by a row of stitching 2 6. The lower edge .of the band 20 is beaded to protect the forehead of the wearer from the heavier and stiier material of which the bandr21 is mad The sides 10 and 11 carry upon their inner surfaces suitable padding 27 of any suitable material such as felt. The padding extends downwardly and has its lower edges secured upon the jaw protectors 28 and 29. Although the jaw` protectors are shown as comprising separate outer sheets of protecting material 30, and are attached to the ear protectors 31, the jaw protectors and ear protectors may comprise integral structures. A de ending flap 32 of any suitable material suclh as felt or sponge rubber has its upper end secured be 100 tween the rear lower edge of the crown and the felt padding 14 carried by the crown.
The depending flap enlarges in width as it recedes from the crown, and carries upon its outer face a protecting cover 33, preferably 105 The flap 32 lies interiorly of the rear ends of the sides and extends downwardly beyond'the lower edges of the rear ends of the sides. The Hap 32 may be modilied in length and in width to meet various 11o conditions, bein met for mounting same upon the head of the wearer. By referring to Fig. 2 it will be apparent that the sides converndownwardly and that the elastic 34 yiel gly retains the sides in such downwardly conver ng position. When the helmet is mounte or a demounted, the sides are capable of a hin ed movement on the straps securing the si es upon the crown. Suitable rows of stitching 35 secure the padding upon the inner faces of the sides. p
It should be observed that by clipping or dishing the sides to receive the ears, 'the sides are stifx'ened thereby providing a recess to receive additional stren thenin or stiienin material if desired. his dis in of the si es, and the provision of additiona stifening matter in the recesses causes the sides to snugly hug the head of the wearer. The jaw protectors together with the structure at the rear of the sides makes possible the elimination of the under chin stra heretofoie employed to preclude dislor gment of the helmet. The vstructure at the rear of the sides, together with the downwardlyy conver feature thereof permits the elimination of the front forehead binding elastic heretofore employed. By eliminating the 'forehead binding elastic it is possible to providev a stouter forehead structure containing the shock resisting material 22. The helmet ma be provided with suitable ventilation lio es 36.
What I claim is: 4 Y 1. In a device of the class described the combination of a crown, depending sides hingedly carried by the crown, the sides be- -the si es, and a base skull protector carried by thev crown and exten downwardly beyond the rear ends of t e sides and between the sides.
3. In a-device of the class described the combination of a crown, sides depending from the crown, spaced from one anotherv at the 'front of the crown and convergingA downwardly and inwardly, elastic means connecting the rear ends of the sides, anda from the crown between the forward ends of the sides.
4. In a device of the class described the combination of a crown, sides depending from the crown, spaced 'from one another at the front of the crown and converging downwardly and inwardly, elastic means connecting the 'rear ends of the sides, a substantially non elastic band depending from the crown between the forward ends of the sies, and jaw protectors carried by the s1 es.`
substantially non elastic band depending' 5. In la device of the class described the combination with a crown of independent, downwardly depending and converging sides, having adjacent rear edges, and an elastic lacing connecting the adjacent edges of the sides.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this '15th day of November, 1922.
HUGO GOLDSMITH.
