' 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-195) This invention relates to uniform caps of the type having .a soft crown, and pertains moreparticularly tov stays for supporting the forward part of the crown.

Uniform caps of the type to which this invention relates ordinarily include a stiif head band, to which a vizor is attached, and a crown consisting of a flat circular top panel and a side panel which flares outward toward the top and is usually somewhat higher at the front than at the rear. The crown may be permanently attached to the band or may be removable. The head band may have a strip of padding 16 attached between the band 10 and the sweat band.

The stay, generally indicated by the numeral 17', is a thin shell molded in one piece from plastic material which a is rigid and resilient enough to hold its normal shape in ordinary handling, yet' can be bent by hand to the extent necessary for assembly with other parts of the cap. The

stay has an upper front portion 17a which is curved both from top to bottom and from side to side to conform to the shape which is desired for the forward part of the crown. .Below portion 17a is a band portion 17b which head band assembly. A pair of Wings 170 and 17d, which may be'initially flat, extend from either side of portion 17b. Extending 'back from the upper edge of portion 17a are three

18, 19 and 20. The band portion 17b has a center notch 21 to-facilitate placing the stay in f proper position.

1 To install the stay on the cap, the band portion 17b is fitted around the front of the band assembly, and wings 17c and 17d are bent back and fastened to band 10 at the sides by staples 24. (one of which is shown in FIG. 2), rivets, or other suitable'means. If a grommet .22 is used in the cap, it is run under the tabs 18 19, and

18 and 20 may be bent down, as illustrated in FIG. 2, to secure the grommet in position. Tab 19 may be used for securing theforward end of a top stiffener 23 which is attached to the grommet at the rear.

In the finished cap, the crown 14' is supported by the stay over the entire forward portion above the viZor and held in a smoothly curved contour.

What is'claimed is:

In a uniform cap of the type having a generally circular head band, a soft crown with a front portion of arcuate shape and a top, a top stiffener underlying said top, and a gromrnet supporting the periphery of said top: a one piece stay comprising a curved band fitting aroundsaid head band below the front portion of said crown, a rigid along line 2-2 of FIG. 1, showing a removable crown and outer band in place on the cap; and j FIG. 3 is a front elevation of the stay prior to installation on a cap.

The head band assembly hereillustrated consists of a stiff band 10 to the lower margin of which a sweat band 11 is stitched and folded up inside in the usual manner. A decorative braid 12 may be stitched to the folded lower margin of the sweat band, and a rigid vizor 13 is secured to the band assembly between the braid and the sweat band. The cap here shown is of the type having a removable crown and outer band assembly 14, constructed, for example, as shown in my U.S. Patent #2,844,824, utilizing a plastic strip 15-with an outwardly projecting bead 15a to hold the crown in place It is understood,

,however, that a crown and outer band assembly maybe crown supporting member extending upward from said band and supporting said entire front portion and being of smoothly curved shape corresponding to that of said forward portion, said member having an upper edge and being coextensive in the circumferential direction with said band, bendable side wings extending from said band and secured to said head band at the sides thereof, and a' central tab and bendable tabs to either side thereof extending rearwardly from the upper edge of said member,

said central tab being secured to said top stiffener and said bendable tabs being bent down around said grommet.
