AUTOMOBILE CAP.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.I8. 19-15.
:1 fiUT/Afifl, Patented Dec. 5, 1916.
A Homer s FRANK RAUDINITZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
enrolments-car.
llfitlfltdth Application filed August 18 To all whom it may concern: N
Be it known that l[, FRANK RAUDNITZ, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New} York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Caps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of head coverings known as caps and which are provided with a vizor for shading the eyes of a' wearer.
Tn caps as now constructed the vizor is immovably secured to the body of the cap, as to the stifi'ening band when the body proper is of soft material, and it is the practice, when eye shading is not required nor desired, to reverse the cap to bring the vizor to the back of the head, or the cap must be pushed away back on the head, and it was in order to overcome this that my invention was conceived, a wearer of one of my caps being enabled to turnthe vizor down into conventional position, or to turn it up out of the way, without afiecting the normal relationship of the cap with respect to the head of the wearer.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which like characters refer to like parts in each of the views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a View of one form of my invention in normal use, partly broken away to show structural details; Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof in its alternative use, also partly broken away; Fig 3 is a sectional view thereof in normal position of the vizor; Fig. 4: is a similar view, fragmentarily, of the alternative position of the vizor; and Fig. 5 is a plan view thereof from the under side with the vizor in normal position. a
The form shown is designed for women, although I do not limit myself in this respect, and comprises the body portion 6 of light fabric provided with a. stifi'ening band 7 at the forward half of the lower edge thereof, and with a hem or fold 8 at the rearwardhalf for the reception of an elastic band or cord 9 the ends of which are secured at the ends of the band 7 and of the vizor 10, and the normal length of the elastic cord 9 is such as to normally hold the band 7 and vizor 10 in a semi circle, as shown in Fig. 5, but said cord Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee's, rare.
Serial No. tense.
yields to outward force at the ends thereof as will be understood.
The stiffening band 7 is inclosed in fabric 7 strips 11 and 12 which are stitched together above the band 7 and to the fabric of the body portion 6, and at the bottom of said band 7 the latter stitching being also-passed through strips 13 and 1.4: covering the stifiener plate 15 of the vizor 10, and it will be seen that a flexible connection is thus provided at the last named stitching, designated 16, permitting independent movement of the vizor with respect to the band 7, this constituting the essential feature of the cap. Because of the strain of the elastic cord 9 on the rear ends of the band 7 and vizor 10, perpendicular to the central portion of said band, said band and vizor are held in a semi-circular formwhen the cap is not in use, and this curvature holds the band and vizor in the same plane, or approximately so, as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the vizor maintains its conventional position. When the cap is in use, the elastic cord 9 is stretched around the back of the head but it still acts in the above manner on the ends of the band 7 and vizor 10, and the result of which is shown in Fig. l.
When the use of the vizor is not desired, the vizor may be straightened. from its normal semi-circular position and bent upwardly on the weakened line 16 between itself and the band 7 and, when again curved into a semi-circular form, the vizor is securely held in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4. This straightening of the vizor and band is necessary only when they are formed of relatively stifi' material which would preclude ready flexing of said vizor, but if the band and vizor are formed of material only sufiiciently stifi to hold the same in place, the vizor may be buckled from the center thereof adjacent the weakened line 16 outwardly toward its ends to force the same from one position to the other without the need for' stretching the elastic cord 9 to an appreciable extent, this being of. advantage when no elastic cord 9 is used and the band 7 is continued around the back of the cap.
The adaptability of the vizor to either of the two positions depends upon the semicircular curvature of the front of the band 7 inasmuch as this insures the curvature of the vizor in either of its two positions whichholds the same in place, but I do not seek to limit myself to any specific construction but reserve the right to make the caps in any manner which will accomplish the desired result. As shown, I. may provide loops 1'7 forholding a veil 18 when the cap is intended forawomen, and I make the body portion 6 very full to accommodate the hair of the wearer in the contemplated use by women, but I may also make the caps for the psehof men if desired with the body'portion of any desired shape, and the band 7 continuous.
I by Letters Patent, is
A cap, comprising a body portion, a'band at the forward half thereof, a vizor held to said band, the line of connection therebetween being weakened to permit bending both band and vizor for holding said band in curvedform to hold said vizor in either upper or lower position, said elastic cord exerting a strain on said band perpendicular to "the plane of the central portion thereof. y
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of A two subscribing witnesses. Having fully described my invention,- what I claim as new,r and desire to secure- FRANK RAUDNITZ.
