HEADDRESS Filed April 1'7, 1950 2 SHEETS-SHEET 2 Julia 5. Degnon, INVENTOR.
Patented Jan. 13, 1953 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE I 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to headdress of the turban or bandana type shown in my U. S. Patent No. 2,274,321, February 24, 1942.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a simplified and improved headdress of the above kind which is highly attractive in appearance and easy to don, and which may be cheaply and expeditiously manufactured.
The nature of the present invention will be apparent from the following description when considered with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the headdress stretched out in flat condition.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the headdress in its normal condition.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section through the roll, taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure i is a side view showing the headdress in position on the head with the streamers extending down the back.
Figure 5 is a front perspective view showing the headdress in position on the head with one streamer extended forwardly over the shoulder and down in the front and with the other streamer extended across the front and backwardly over the shoulder.
Figure 6 is a rear perspective view of the headdress as shown in Figure 5.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 indicates an elongated flat body of suitable fabric having a relatively wide intermediate portion 6 adapted to be placed over the head, and outwardly tapered elongated end portions 1, 'l adapted to form streamers. The rear edge 8 of the portion 6 and the rear edges 5, 9 of the portions 1, 1 are substantially straight and coextensive or in the same plane. The front edges [0, ii! of the portions 1, i are preferably concave and extend inwardly and forwardly and merge with the front edge [I of the portion 6, said edge 5 I being preferably convex. The end edges 1a of the portions i are substantially semi-circular A soft flexible roll I2 is coextensive with and stitched at i3 to a flange Ha at the front edge II of the portion 6. This roll preferably tapers from the center to its ends, and consists of a fabric envelope M enclosing a fibrous core or filler l5 of an oval cross section. The envelope l4 comprises a sheet of material having superposed lateral edges l ia stitched to the flange Ho, and the same stitching 13 which secures these 2 edges to the flange also secures a reinforcing strip l5a to the edges Ma at a side thereof opposite the flange.
An elastic strap It is attached at its ends to the ends of the roll l2, and is adapted to be disposed around the back and at the base of the head and to draw the roll and the front part of the portion {5 around the top and sides of the head and thereby secure the headdress in position. Obviously, the streamers l, i may be disposed or fashioned and secured in many different ways to produce various effects and appearances as is generally wellknown in the art. The portion E3 will drape in folds at the back to give a novel appearance and avoid the formation of a permanently shaped crown. The strap l6 preferably consists of an elastic strand having a gathered fabric covering.
From the foregoing description, the construction, manner of use and advantages of the invention will be apparent. Modifications and changes in details are contemplated within the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A headdress comprising a single sheet of elongated material having a relatively wide intermediate portion adapted to be placed over the head and a pair of relatively narrow end portions adapted to form streamers, the rear edges of said intermediate and end portions being straight and constituting continuations of one another, said intermediate portion having a convex front edge portion angulated to provide a flange, said end portions having substantially semi-circular outer end edges and concave front edges extending from the respective end edges to the respective opposite ends of the convex front edge of the intermediate portion, a soft flexible roll coextensive with said ccnvex front edge and comprising a fibrous core having an oval cross-section and an envelope provided on said core, said envelope'comprising a sheet of material having superposed lateral edges positioned on and coextensive with said flange, a reinforcing strip positioned on one of said lateral edges remote from said flange, stitching securing said strip and said lateral edges to the fiange, said roll being substantially thick at the center thereof and tapered toward its ends, and an elastic band having opposite ends thereof secured to respective opposite ends of said roll, said band being adapted for positioning around the back at the base of the 3 head of the wearer whereby to draw the roll and the front of said intermediate portion around the top and sides of said head to sustain the headdress in position.
