UNITEDSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
RAYMOND SMITH, or new YORK, n. Y., ASSIGNOR T BELLA SMITH, of NEW" v YOBIQNY.
HAT.
Application filed October 2,1923. serial No. 666,063.
To all whom it may mom I Be it known that I, RAYMOND SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part here- This invention relates to hats and is concerned particularly with the typev of hat known as a tam-oshanter or sailor in which a stiff head band carries a soft crown portion. The principal object of the invention is to provide a hat of this character which shall be provided with an adjustable head band of simple and inexpensive construe tion but by means of which, through simple manipulation, the band may be expanded or contracted and fastened in adjusted position to. adapt itself to the particular size of the head of the wearer. Proposals of this same general nature have been made heretofore and no claim will be made hereinafter broadly to the provision of an adjustable head band apart from the particular means shown and described herein and as applied to hats of the particular type defined above. In accordance with the invention it is proposed that the head band shall be made up in the conventional manner except that pro- 1 vision shall be made for telescoping the ends ofthe band so that while one end slides into a pocket formed in the lining for the band the overlapping end which is exposed to view shall form a sightly and unbroken continuation of the band and be provided with fastening devices to facilitate its permanent adjustment. It is proposed, further, in the interest of sightliness to so attach the band to the crown that the free overlapping end thereof shall come at a point below a side scam in the crown which itself may be opened for a short distance above the band tam-oshanter or sailor hat embodying the improvements.
Figure 2 is a frag enta y detailed view in section through the bandv taken on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Figure 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows anal showing the relation of the telescoping on s.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view inside elevation showing a different form of se curing devices for the overlapping end of the band.
Figure 4: is a view similar generally'to Figure 3 but showing still another form of securing device.
The type of hat with which the invention is concerned comprises generally a soft crown a and a stiff head band I) secured thereto. In accordance with the improvements this head bandis formed as an openended strip and the lining 0 for the band is formed with a pocket to receive one end I) of the band in telescoping engagement while i for an appreciable distance above the band b as indicated at 6' so as to facilitate relative movement between the ends Z), 6 without causing bulging of the crown portion at this point. The material of the crown a may itself overlap along the open seam e and readily follow the movements of the respective ends 6, 6 to which it is secured Without any interference. The free end of the overlapping portion I) of the band is fastened to the band 6 by any convenient fastening devices, three types ofwhich are shown in the drawings. In the form shown inFigures 1 and 2 a hook f is sewed to the inner side of the overlying end 6 near its end and is adapted to engage any one or number of eyes 9 sewn onto the band 6 at such points as would give an adjustment to typical heads within limits.
In Figure 3there is shown a stud h on the overlying flap '5 which may be engaged with any one of a series of sockets in as will be understood to effect the desired adjustment to size. I i
In Figure 4 a strap Z is shown as stitched t the and f the overlying fl p m and gagcable with a retaining buckle n secured on the headband as is clear.
The construction proposed is characterized by theutmost simplicity and inexpensiveness in manufacture since practically no departure is made from the conventional method now followed except that the hat band is made of such length. as to enable its ends to overlie to the desired degree necessary for effecting the proper adjustments Within limits through the telescoping action described. The smooth contour of the band is Wholly retained for the comfort of the wearer and its external appearance is preserved in pleasing form.
hat I claim is:
In a hat having a stiff head band and a lining therefor, open ends formed in the band, a pocket in the lining to receive one of said ends in telescoping engagement, the other end being adapted to overlie the outer surface of the band, a loop on the hand through which the last named end passes a fastener secured on the inner side of the last named end, co-operating means sewed to the outer surface of the head band at a point beyond the loop for engagement selectively by said fastening device on the end for regulation of the size of the 11 Bad band, and a seam 'in the crown open for an appreciable distance above the head band in proximity to the ()VQI'LYiHQ' ends the sides of said seam being disposed in overlapping relation.
This specification signed this 29th day of Sept. A. D. 1923.
