This invention relates to wearing apparel,

especially to headwear and more particularly toa head covering of the nature of a toque.

It is an object of this invention to provide a snug fitting article of the above class which may be made of any suitable material which possesses little inherent structural rigidity, having an openable crown which is adapted to be worn in a closed position with a foldable member disposed over an otherwise uncovered portion of the crown of the head; the foldable member also being adapted to fold back and lie over part of the stationary portion of the crown leaving a substantial portion of the head exposed.

Another object of this invention is to provide readily operable means to fasten the foldable member or adjustable flap either in a closed or open position as suits the needs of the wearer.

Another object of this invention is toprovide a snug fitting toque with the characteristic of self conforming to the contour of the head of the wearer in which an elastic adjuster is invisibly incorporated in the material of the band so that the hat will be drawn snugly about the head of the wearer.

Still another object of this invention is to provide supplemental bands at the margin of the opening in the crown which will conform to and cooperate with the head of the wearer to hold the hat securely in place by preventing slipping after the wearer has once adjusted the hat in a desired position.

Another object is to provide a toque which presents in one arrangement of its parts a novel appearance as an article of head apparel, suitable for street wear, and which can be converted into a snug fitting skull cap with a ventilating crown so that it is capable of confining the hair of the wearer conveniently while engaged in athletic games, and at the same time permit adequate access of air to the scalp for ventilation.

Other objects and features of the invention will appear as the description of the particular physical embodiment selected to illustrate the invention progresses.

In a now preferred embodiment of the invention selected for illustration and description, the part designated generally by the reference character l is the body of an article of headwear which may be called a toque for purposes of brevity, the term meaning to describe a head covering which conforms closely to the head of the wearer over a substantial area of the scalp.

The exact nature of the material or the shape of the toque are not essential, it being merely preferable that they be adapted to fit snugly about the head of the wearer, especially for confining the hair during participation in athletic sports.

In pursuance of an object of the invention a triangular or other shaped flap 2 is adapted to fold back over the non-movable portion of the crown leaving a substantial portion of the head exposed, or to cover the exposed portion of the crown completely, as suits the needs of the wearer. This flap is provided with suitable means for retaining 'it in closed position and preferably means are also provided to hold the flap in folded back position. For this purpose the flap may be provided with a loop 3 at its apex which is adapted to engage one or the other of the buttons 4 and 4' and thus hold the movable portion in relatively stable position when fastened on either side of the toque.

The button or similar fastening device 4 on the opening side of the hat is preferably attached to the lowermost portion of a reinforcing band or molding flange 5 which folds out from the margin of the opening of the crown 6 as shown in Fig. 4. The free edge of the flange 5 is detachably secured to the side of the hat by means of a fastener which may be in the form of a small band or strip 7 suitably secured at its ends to the body of the hat, as shown in Fig. 3, and adapted to engage the button 4.

The button 4, when engaged by the strip, has the additional purpose as hereinbefore described of detachably securing the fiap 2 in the closed position by means of the loop 3.

In the open position of the foldable member the loop 3 is disposed around the button 4', or attached to the stationary part of the hat by any other suitable means.

To achieve the object of a quickly convertible head covering, it is necessary and desirable that there be a small amount of fullness in the fit of the flap portion to the head of the wearer. This fullness is taken up in the top of the crown when the flap is in the closed position by the formation of dogs ears 8 where the movable flap 2 meets the overhanging fiange or supplemental band 5 thus adding to the stylish and ornamental appearance of the hat. In the open position, the fullness forms a stylish and ornamental peak II in the top of the crown as shown in Fig. 6.

The reinforcing band 5, which has previously been described, and the reinforcing band 9 which lies along the margin of the opening 2 in the crown of the hat I and bears directly upon the head of the wearer, have the important function both in the open and closed position of molding or shaping the hat to the head of the wearer and holding it at the desired position on the head indefinitely whether the flap be open or closed. These bands therefore make the hat conform snugly to the head of the wearer despite any fullness in the crown which may be desirable from a standpoint of style or appearance.

The reinforcing band 5, aside from this function, has an additional use in that it renders the hat or head covering more ornamental, particularly since it is adapted in the preferred embodiment of my invention, to lie over and substantially conceal the elastic size adjuster Ill.

The size adjuster l may be composed of any suitable elastic material. It is preferably secured to the inner band of the hat and is adapted to draw up any looseness of the band about the head of the wearer into folds which are substantially concealed by the flange 5. The combination of the elastic adjuster II] with the supplemental bands and 9 assures a snug fitting head covering which will remain adjusted in the position desired by the wearer.

It is a feature of my invention that the snug fitting character of the head covering is achieved without the usual disadvantage of the elastic or other adjusting agent being visible when the hat is worn. This is accomplished by the covering of the adjuster means In with the flange portion 5 as shown in Figs. 3 and 7.

In Fig. 9 an optional form of my invention is shown incorporating a brimmed head covering, the brim being of any desirable form, material, size or stiffness. Also embodied in this optional form with or without a brim is a fastener which is preferably a hookless slide fastener including complemental hookless fastener elements l2 mounted on the marginal edges of the band 5 and the flap 2 and a running slide l3 adapted to effect the union of said elements or their disconnection. In this embodiment of my invention the band 5 and the flap 2 when the hookless fastener elements are engaged may be fastened to the body of the hat by means of the loop 3 engaging the button 4 under the loop 1 as previously described, and in this position the hat hasa novel and stylish appearance making it suitable for street wear; this variation may also be worn in the open position by adjustment of the hookless slide fastener and engagement of the loop 3 on the flap 2 with the button 4' as heretofore described.

While I have described herein the best physical embodiment of the invention known to me at the present time, I wish it to be understood that this is of an illustrative character only and I therefore do not wish to limit myself to the embodiment described herein but wish to cover my invention broadly in any form in which its principle is embodied.

I claim:

1. A new article of headwear having a close fitting crown, means in the form of a fiap, for opening the crown while on the head of the wearer, a supplemental band on the edge of the opening engaging the head of the wearer directly, a supplemental band on the edge of the opening folded away from the opening and lying against the outside of the crown, means for detachably securing the outside supplemental band to the stationary portion of the crown.

2. A new article of headwear having a close fitting crown, means in the form of a flap, for opening the crown while on the head of the wearer, a supplemental band on the edge of the opening engaging the head of the wearer directly, a supplemental band on the edge of the opening folded away from the opening and lying against the outside of the crown, means for detachably securing the outside supplemental band to the stationary portion of the crown, and a circumferentially extending elastic size adjuster incorporated into the crown substantially concealed beneath the outside supplemental band.

3. A new article of headwear having a closely fitting crown, means in the form of a triangularly shaped flap or the like for opening the crown while on the head of the wearer, a loop secured to the apex of the triangular fiap, buttoning means for detachably securing the loop of the flap tothe stationary portion of the crown when the flap is in open position, and the crease between the stationary portion of the crown and the movable flap forming a common base of the triangular opening and triangular fiap, a supplemental band on the arms of the triangular opening which bears against the head of the wearer, a supplemental band on the arms of the triangular opening in the crown folded away from the opening and lying against the outside of the crown, and buttoning means attached to the outside supplemental band adapted to be detachably secured to a suitable engaging means on the stationary portion of the crown and when so secured to detachably engage the loop of the flap when the flap is in closed position.

4. A new article of headwear having a closely fitting crown, an openable flap in the crown adapted to be worn in open or closed position, a supplemental band attached to the margin of the opening engaging the head of the wearer diin the crown and on the edge of the outer sup plemental band, and a running operator adapted toeffect the union of said elements and their disconnection at the will of the user.
