certain new and useful Improvements in Caps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in caps, one of the objects being to provide means whereby a cap can be adjusted to heads of different sizes. A further object of the invention is to provide means to stiffen the band of soft caps at the point of connection of the vizor thereto, so that the said vizor will stay in proper position; in other words, will not unduly sag or rise. One of the features of my improved adjusting means is that the band of soft caps can be decreased in diameter without producing seams orlumps that will render the cap uncomfortable as the adjustment is made at points where the band is split, the said band being split preferably at two places, there being a split portion at each side of the vizor and at a point adjacent to which the vizor is secured to the body of the cap.

I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail, the novel features of which I will finally claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is an edge view of a cap embodying my improvement;

Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view, in elevation, looking toward one of the split portions from the outside of the cap, the band being illustrated as separated from the edge of the body of the cap adjacent the end of the vizor.

As herein illustrated, a cap made up in accordance with my improvement consists of a body portion 5, made out of a single piece of fabric which in this instance is folded over adjacent the edges, as at 6, for a portion of the circumference thereof, and split as at 7 at the front of the cap. The split portions of the body of the cap will be stitched together. The body of the cap is folded. over as stated to not only enable the fabric to be properly formed,but to enhance the appearance of the cap. The split portions 7 are also provided for the purpose of enabling the fabric to beshaped into a body portion for. a hat.

By referring to Fig. 1, itwill be seen that I the portion 8 of the piece out of which the 8 body of the hat is formed and to which the vizor 9 is attached, extends beyond the edge of the remaining portion of said piece; therefore, the edge 10 of the cap is cut back from the edge 11 to which the vizor 9 is attached, the vizor being attached to the edge 1.1 as at 12. To the edge 10 of the body portion, I secure, along oneof its edges, a band 13, said band being secured along the entire edge 10 up to the seams 7 (see Fig. 3), there being a seam 7 at each end of the extension 8, although but one is illustrated. Each end of the band 13 carries a projecting portion or strap 14 having a fastening element 15, of the snap-fastener variety, to engage either one of a series of buttons 16 carried by the extension 8. Each strap 14: (one only being illustrated) is provided with a slit 17 and buttons 18, the slits being located about in line with the seams 7. The buttons 18 on strap 13 cooperate with snap-fastener elements 18 on supplemental straps 19 secured at one end thereof to the extension 8 adjacent the point of securement of the vizor 9 to said exten'- sion. After band 18 has been secured to the body 5, as described, there will be open or split portions 20 provided, across which the straps "14: and 19 extend. When arranged for use, straps 19 will be passed through slits 17 in straps 14L (see Figs. 2 and 3). To adjust the band of the hat, or that portion thereof which engages the head, straps 1a and 19 can be manipulated to decrease the diameter of the head engaging portion of the cap. As the fastener elements 15 and 18 can be caused to engage the proper buttons 16 and 18, the manipulation or drawing of the straps 14: and 19 will close the gaps or split portions 20; hence, no wrinkles will be formed, and the inner surface of the band of the cap will be perfectly smooth. As straps 14 engage the extension 8, said extension will be considerably stilfened, thereby providing a support for the vizor 9. The vizor is furthermore stiffened by the strap 14-, for the reason that there will be a double thickness of material at each gap 20 which will greatly reinforce the vizor at each end. The passing of the straps 19 through the straps 14 provides said double thickness of material. In Fig. 4, the band 18 is illustrated as separated from the body of the cap adjacent the seam 7 to more fully illustrate the gap 20, although in practice it is sewn close up to the seam 7.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a cap, a body member having a portion thereof, Wider than the remainder, to provide an extension, a viZor secured to the said extension, a band secured to the edge of the narrower portion of the body from a point adjacent one end of the vizor to a point adjacent the other end thereof to pronaaopsa vide a gap at each end of the vizor between said vizor and said band, a strap secured to each end of the band and having a slit therein intermediate the ends thereof, the slit in the straps being located opposite the adjacent gap between the vizor and band a supplemental strap carried by the extension at each end thereof and arranged to be passed through the slit in the adjacent strap, fastening means carried by the band to engage the supplemental strap, and fastening means carried by the extension to engage the straps carried by the band.
