This invention relates to head gear and more particularly to a workmans cap and it is an object of the invention to provide an article of this kind which can be readily adjusted to assure desired fit upon the head of the wearer.

It is also an object of the invention wherein the rear portion of the cap at its lower or band portion is formed to provide a flap and wherein said flap and the adjacent portions of the cap are provided with coacting means to permit contraction or expansion of the band or lower portion of the cap within certain limitations.

The invention also has for an object to provide a head gear of a structure eliminating the need for the manufacture of the head gear in different sizes as only one size of pattern is required in production.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved head gear, whereby certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in rear elevation of a cap embodying the invention;

Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in rear elevation with a portion broken away and parts in distorted relation; and

Figure 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.

In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, C denotes the crown or body portion of the cap, and 3 the usual sweat band, which is shown as a conventional design of work cap. Stitched to the outer lower marginal portion of the crown or body p01- tion 0 is an adjusting band B.

While the cap 0 as illustrated is of a work type, the invention as herein comprised can be employed with equal advantage to dress caps of any type.

This hat band B is of a case type and extends only partially around the crown or body portion with its free ends at the rear and with a material spacing therebetween. The crown or body portion C closely adjacent to the free rear ends of the band B is provided with the short inwardly disposed and substantially parallel slits l. The art 2 of the material of the cap or crown C at the outer marginal portion of each of the slits l is turned inwardly or away from the slits l whereby a fold or pleat 3 is provided upwardly of the crown or body portion. The two folds or pleats 3 are disposed in upward divergence.

The portion of the material of the crown or body portion between the folds or pleats 3 provides a flap 4. Initially this flap is of a length to extend beyond the band B so that the material may be folded back to give a double thickness to the flap, the two plies so formed being held or secured together by the stitching 5. It is to be noted that the outer margin of the finished flap l is substantially flush with the outer margins of the adjacent ends of the band B.

overlying the outer face of the flap 4 and secured lengthwise thereto, are the fabric strips 6 held in place by lines of stitching 5 and l. The outer margins of the strips 6 are substantially flush with the longitudinal margins of the band B. The strips 6 are of such widths throughout their lengths as to provide between their inner or opposed margins, an elongated narrow pocket 8 coextensive in length with the lengths of the strips 6 and which strips are coextensive in length with the width of the flap 4. The ends of the pocket 8 are open.

Held within the pocket 8 by certain of the stitching 1, is a flexible rack 9 extending substantially the entire length of the pocket 8 and with the opposite portions of which engage the slide members It secured to and extending outwardly from the free extremities of the band B. Each of the slide members carries a rocking lock lever H for coaction with the rack 9 to hold the slide members in in selected adjusted positions along the rack 9.

By having the ends of the pocket 3 open, the slide members II] can readily be applied to or released from the rack 9. However, the members It} are normally in operative engagement with the rack 9 due to the fact that the free extremities of the band B are maintained in overlying relation with respect to the flap 4 by the folds or pleats 3.

It is believed to be obvious that a required fitting adjustment for the cap may be obtained by the necessary adjustment of the slide members Ill along the rack 9.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a head gear constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.

I claim:

In a headgear, including a crown and a visor at the front thereof, a flap formed between a pair of spaced vertical slits opening through the rear edge portion of the crown, a pair of spaced horizontally dis osed fabric strips secured on the outer side of said flap along the side edges thereof, a pair of adjusting band lengths secured along the outer side of the bottom edge portion of the crown, opposed ends of the band lengths terminating at said slits, a flexible rack element housed between the flap and said strips with its teeth exposed at the space between the latter, the inner edges of said strips and the underlying portions of said rack member being commonly secured to said flap, a slide member mounted on the inner end of each of said band lengths and engaged 4 with the rack member for movement therealong, and a pivoted lock lever carried by each slide member for selective engagement with the teeth of the rack to adjust the peripheral portion of said crown for a proper fit about the head of the wearer.
