SW AT-BAND non HATS;
Specification of LettersPatent- Application filed July 17, 1909. Serial Nd. 598,119.
Tool! wlztm -it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN N Brennan, a "citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the countyof Philadelphia 5 and State of Pennsylvania, have mvented certa1n new and useful Improvements in Sweat-Bands for Hats; and I do herebyideclare the following to be a full, clear, and eXactdeseription-of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 'it :ippertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the'accompanying draw- *ings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specifis cation.
This inventiortrelatcs to new and ueful improvements in adjustable sweat bands and ventilators' for hats and the object in view is to produce a simpleand eilicient device of this nature adapted to take the place of the ordinary leather band in hats and so arranged as to afford means for ventilating the interior space of the hat, preventing perspiration and thereby promoting thehealth .of the hair and prevent the same fallin out. -The invention comprises more specifically a perforated band, preferably of celluloid, and havin attached thereto a corrugated strip, thus leaving a series of spaces intermediate the band and the inner surface of the hat, sullicient to allow for complete ventilav tion, the band being adjustable, and in the provision of means carried by the corrugated strip and adapted to engage the hat.
The invention comprises various details of construct-ion, combinations and arrangcnumts of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically. defined in the 40 appended claims.
illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure ,1 1s a )erspcctive vimvshowing the band as applied to a hat. Fig. 2 is a vertical through a portion of a hatsectional iuew and band. Fig. 3 is an'enlargeddetail in perspective of the band with the corrugated strip attached, and Fi tail in perspective showing the means for interlocking the ends.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a perfo-,
rated band, made preferably of celluloidof any desirable width. A portion of said band is cut away asat G, forming a narrower. portion where the band comes in contact with the forehead of the wearer. Said 4: is an enlarged dc band has a 'corr'hgated strip D, which corrugation may be ofany shape, either curved or angular, and which is fastened by'any suitable adhesive material to the face of the Patented Jun 7,1910.
band adjacent to the hat to which-it to be attached and said corrugated strip has 'a cut away portion D in registration with the cutaway part of theband of the forehead and the ends of the corrugated strip terminate a: short distancefrom the ends ofthe band, as shown tive view. strip is preferably narrower than the width of the band, as shown. I
One end of the band is provided with a tongue E which is adapted to engage the slits'F formed in the opposite end of the band as shown, thus allowing the two en s to be held to slide'together with their opposite edges flush to adapt the band to difclearly in the detail perspec-" The width of the corrugated 1 ferent sized hats and, when the size is adjusted', the band is designed to be fastened to the hat, preferably by means of, the "-fasg teners K, each of WlllCll has a shank portion extending longitudinally through one of the corrugations and its end bent to form a spur K which is passed through the hat and clenched in the manner shown clearly in the sectional view of the drawings. Said fasteners may be disposed at different locations about the circumference of the band in order to hold the same securely in place after it is adjusted to the proper size.
From the foregoing, it will be noted that, bythe provision of a combined-sweat and ventilating band made in accordance with my invention, a simple and inexpensive device is afiorded whlch may be readily ap-I plied to a hat'when it is manufactured or after it has been placed upon the market. In the event of it being placed in the hat after the hat has been equipped with the usual leather band and placed upon the market, the leather band may be easily removed and the celluloid band substituted in place thereof by simply clenching the fasteners in the manner described; The inner surface of the celluloid band being perfectly smooth and having perforations extending practically its entire length will form an agreeable contact surface to the Y forehead and will not interfere with the bloodcirculation to the roots of the hair and, being slightly resilient, will eonr'orm readily to the head of the wearer. The celluloid being flexible will allow the band to be drawn down tightly in'the event of it being desired to do so to hold the hate more securely for any purpose.
What I claim to be new 1s:---
1. A combined sweat and ventilatin band for has, consisting ofa perforated celluloid band having a narrow'portiona part of its 1 2; 1th. and a corrugated stri upon the outer fmGQ thereof,- saidcorru ate strip being narrower thanqthe width 0 said band, straps struck-up from said 'band at one end of the latter, a tongue forni'ed at the opposite end of the band and adapted to engage said straps and hold the o posite longitudinal edges of the band. flus with each other, fastening means engaging the corrugations of said strip and adapted to. hold the band to the crown. .1 l' 2. A combined sweat and; ventilatin band for hats, consisting of a perforate celluloid band having a, narrow portion a part of its 1e h and a corrugated strip upon theouter ace thereof said corrugated each other, a metallic fastening device having flexible fingers, one of which passes belongitu inal edges of the band flush with" tween a corrugation and the band and has its end bent over the upper edge of the cor rugated strip, the other fingers of the fastening device extending laterally from the band and between the lower edges of the band and the corrugated strip and adapted.
to be clenched to the crown.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix mysignature in the presence of two witnesses.
